All games with checkpoints are actually stories being told by the prince of Persia from Sands of Time. Every time you die, he just got the story wrong and needs to back up a bit.
In old-school platformers, the characters aren't really on a serious quest. They're just running an obstacle course in preparation for it. That's why they jump off the edge of the screen every time they "die". Their lives are simply the number of times they're willing to try again before they give up and succumb to alcoholism.
I didn't even know that there were preset avatars. Huh, how bout that?
Regardless, Strider/Aragorn, as he is portrayed in the Jackson films, is one of my favorite fictional characters across all media. The Aragorn of the book is still great, but is less humanly flawed and therefore less interesting.
