It often turns out that it was actually a knife fight, and then you look like a coward for bringing a revolver when everyone else has just got a little butter knife.

Always bring a knife as as a back up. Remember the only fair fight is the one you win.

I prefer the other saying "show up for a knife fight with a gun" hell 200+ years of imperialism can't be wrong.

If you can, bring a gun. If you can't, bring a knife. Better to have a knife and no gun than to having nothing at all.

Also knives allow for stealthy kills.

Why not both?

1. The gun part of that doesn't do anything and if did the blade would make unwieldy and too inaccurate to shoot an enemy standing directly in front of you.

2. Replacing the sword grip with a gun grip would make the weapon awkward and unwieldy when using it as a sword, so now it's useless as a gun AND a sword.

3. That doesn't even look cool, it just plain looks like a crappy weapon to use (and, as I have pointed out, is).
But hey, at least you're not taking the joke far too seriously.

OT: I'm a lover, not a fighter.

[sub]And can we get rid of this fucking Captcha thing? The words are so illegible that I have to type it out 3 times (they could at least use real bloody words), and the Escapist hardly ever gets spam from what I've seen.[/sub]

I thought Modern Warfare 2 taught us all how valuable a knife is? Who says a knife doesn't have range?

Dude you have to tell me where you got that moving image. that was hilarious.

What about that scene from the Punisher movie (the first one) where Tom Jane has that knife where the blade shoots out of the handle? That would work.

Guns have the range. Even a handgun has an effective range of at least twenty metres, whereas a knife only around five. On the other hand, knives are much more deadly, being a near-guaranteed kill in range whereas several pistol rounds are usually required to bring a target down. Also, they have the advantage of not requiring ammo.

Just as another counterpoint.

Anyway, yes I agree to the meaning behind the phrase, which is pretty obviously a good thing.

Bring both >.>

Dang, just noticed the edit, well in that case bring the gun, unless you're like... Really good at sneaking around and going ninja, then you really should bring a knife.

Close quarters: yes
Actually: stay away, in principle
Also, if you bring a knife, aren't you ineligible to participate in the gunfight?

Always bring a knife to a fist-fight, and a gun to a knife-fight. Stay the fuck away from a gun-fight.

During Military Anti-Terrorism training, in the 3.5 seconds it takes to draw, and lick a safty off aim and fire it was prove many times a attacker can close 15 feet with a knife and slit your throat or stabbed you in many different locations.

How bout don't take a tired lame cliche to a intelligent conversation.
