While there's nothing wrong with MK, it's certainly not the "thinking person's game" Portal is, so I was a little disappointed. This was compounded when I struck up a conversation with a guy in line.
Pretentious-Man....AWAY!! Congratulations. You are claiming your popular game is more mature than another. What does it feel like to be the new Halo / CoD fan?

Anyway, I don't care about either, but I'd be kind of surprised if after all that ARG stuff and advertising everywhere, Portal 2 falls behind MK. I mean, MK has definitely existed longer, but I didn't think there was still so big of a fanbase for it.
No, I'm saying that a puzzle game requires more analytical thought than a fighting game. That's a pretty indisputable fact.
Then prepare for me to dispute it. And I'm not even a fighting game person.

Portal has a number of interesting puzzles, yes. It often takes some pondering, looking over the test chamber, and the solution often feels very unique and interesting. I'm not going to degrade Portal's workings. But a fighting game is not automatically reduced to thoughts of "kill kill kill". To kill someone, you kind of have to first figure out HOW to kill them. The strategies of figuring out which combo to use when, the advantages of a particular character, keeping an eye on your ultra meter (or whatever they call it now), how to CHANGE your combo if something unexpected happens, what strategy your opponent is using and what weaknesses it has...there is quite a lot going on in the mind of a professional in the middle of a very fast-paced game. When you look at the network of decisions, I don't think you can automatically say it's a smaller network than that of Portal's puzzles.
Ooooorr..you button mash.

Hell, that's what I do in fighting games and I tend to win.

I really liked the original, and maybe Portal 2 will get a shot. too, after I finished school in about three months. Mortal Kombat, I think it looks nice, plus I liked fighting games, especially in multiplayer, but I only played a few at partys since I don't own ANY console. But guys consider this: Fighting games you could win by random button smashing, and don't even prentent like its not true.
With 3-D games I would agree with you but with 2-D it's simply not true. This is why Mortal Kombat "feels right" again to it's old fanbase. It's 2-D again. As ever MK is reverse engineered Street Fighter. 3-D combined with vast move sets was making it too easy to slop moves, some of them intended to require a great deal of practice. If you randomly button mash against a practiced player in Street Fighter they will mop the floor with you 9 times out of 10 I've had people try it only to realize that this isn't Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive 4. If they are a tournament level player? 10 of 10. The same goes for Blazblue. Marvel Vs. Capcom I'm iffy on since holding down two buttons can now unleash all holy heck.

As for how much thought is used in Portal 2 Vs. a Fighting game? In my opinion they are equal yet different. Both games require a great deal of thought but in two very disparate ways. (Full disclosure: I am only on Chapter 3 of Portal 2. I just finished the first one on release night! I have beaten the other fighters I've mentioned multiple times, they are my favorite genre.)
I really resent that little Soul Calibur quip. While it may not have the degree of obsession Street Fighter has with things like frame counting if someone who actually knows what they are doing(is able to do Impacts etc) it is the same story in Street Fighter. There is more to the Soul Series than button bashing. You can get away with that shit against the computer but not a real player.
It was not intented as an insult. Just one players experience. It's why I traded in all of my 3-D games except for DOA4 which I didn't have the original case for. When I first got my arcade stick I found that at times I would be trying to do one move and instead I would do something else, which was at times quite a bit more powerful, then I experimented online and started unintentionally wrecking house, something I usually don't do with consistency when I'm trying for the same 50/50 reason that I listed above. One of the players was quite good and soon came over the headset with "Duuuuude, how much have you practiced that." I told him the truth. "I haven't." Since my goal was fun rather than supporting Taoist philosophy I returned to focusing on 2-D games. I loved Sould Calibur okay? The ability to make my own fighter with their own style and weapon choice was brilliant. Yoda in a fighting game? Yes, please. He HEALS?? *thud* So it's nothing against the game, I'm speaking to the inherent flaws of using 3-D with huge lists of moves and that I believe the industry (via experience) has realized this which is why we aren't seeing too many new 3-D fighting games and why the new fighting games we do see seem to have returned to their roots. Or in the case of SNK or AKSYS never left them to begin with.

Not going to play it. Haven't played the first and I have no interest in it. Looks boring.

And if I hear about that bloody cake on more time, I'll stick my head in a Rhino's arse!

EDIT- Btw, Fighting games are a clever man's game as well. If your against a good opponent, your brain has to work in over drive to beat them. Or against Seth...or Jinpachi...or anyone onBlaz Blue...

Well that's fair enough. I am just a bit curious as a lot of SF players do have a bit of a chip on their shoulder about the Soul Series and a few others and consider them a lesser game series. If you have genuinely tried it fair enough but I feel a lot of SF players are like that because they gave it a small go didn't like the style but considered it lesser because of that.

I don't think you were quite smug enough. Be more smug please.
That isn't an intelligent enough request. Please express how much more smug you'd like the poster to be as either a fraction or percentage and I'm sure the poster will be happy to swoop down for long enough to oblige.

Mortal Kombat's just been around for longer, so more people have heard of it.

It's a shame Valve games don't have a lot of players on the Xbox. No-one I know, other than myself, has Portal 2.

Wait, the new Mortal Kombat released this past week?

I'm sure if this was the days before digital download you would have seen people amass there to buy it, realize the sizable chunk of players who are buying Portal 2 over Steam and most of them have not the need to wait outside in chilly weather to get it.

Mortal Kombat but that's because I was more in the mood for it and it has more in length (PSN is down of course and my brother was away so...) Although I've already lost interest. That may be a problem. P3P isn't out till thursday either...

I don't really care about either. I'll pick up portal 2 eventually, when it's no longer full price.
