Well I know that Nolan wants his Batman films to remain somewhat realistic, so my guess is The Riddler.

Imagine it: after The Dark Knight Batman is a wanted criminal, and Gotham's number one. So to help track him down they hire a private detective from out of town, called Edward Nashton. But as time goes on Eddies job starts to become an obsession, culminating in him changing his name to Edward Nigma and becoming The Riddler.

On that note, I hear that both David Tennant and Johnny Depp would like to play the role. Out of the two, I think Tennant would be better. Both can do insanity exceptionally well, but Tennant is better at clever insanity.
I can see the sense in doing things that way.

That with Zsasz or Croc (as a big bloke with a skin condition, NOT a talking dinosaur) as a meat villan for Batman to brawl with would rock.

Here's the official poster. I also am certain that the penguin will be in there two.
If you dislike the riddler listen to this quote
"You don't understand... I really didn't want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to Arkham Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I... I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I... I might actually be crazy."
Cant be the new poster, its still got Aaron Eckhart and Heath Ledger in the credits at the bottom, sorry to burst the bubble there.

I also heard a rumour that Brittany Murphey was being cast as Harley Quinn, fair match if you ask me

One more thing: deadly umbrellas can be done in a serious manner. Just ask Georgi Markov [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgi_Markov].

Not to mention that the image in the poster is clearly a 50x150 pixel image that was stretched to fit into the poster. :p

People, do not forget the fact, that Two-Face may not be nessecarily dead, how? heres several good reasons Two Face could still be among the living:

His coin was 'sunny side up', when lied on the pavement, big clue there... Plus the fact that it wasnt that tall a building, he could have survived the fall... and the police have manynmuch motive to keep his livingness secret...

So dont count Harvey out yet...

and Im pretty sure its official that Riddler is going to be a villian next movie..

well it would make for more drama if Dent was a "secret" patint up in Arkham. Eckhart has stated however that, when pressed. Nolan stated that Dent was dead. IT's more than possbly he could return however.

I want Black Mask goddamnit.
hell yes
It would be a perfect villain after Joker. Joker and Batman were the two sides of the same coin, one good, one evil. Black Mask is what Batman could have become if evil. It would be perfect.

Riddler is good, so is Catwoman, and they'd both work in the Nolan Universe (NU)

If they change Bane a bit, they could fit him in the NU. Maybe making Venom some kind of steroid and, of course, making him big, but still human sized.

Black Mask and Hush also seem good choices, but I honestly never read any stories with them, so I can't say for sure. Besides, I don't think they're easily recognizable by people who don't read comics. I only watched the Animated Series and the older films as a kid and had never heard of those two until I started hearing speculation about the next villain. But maybe they can get one of them in as a secondary villain.

EDIT: I don't think they should recast the Joker for the next film, but if they do it for another film, I think that Harley should be in.

There are way more villains than the mainstream ones named in this poll. If Nolan sticks to following the graphic novels for his inspiration, it may be some villain most of the world has never heard of.
Remember Ra's Al Ghul? Nobody except the comic community knew of him, and he was awesome in Batman Begins. He could come back for all we know, he does tend to do that in the comics.
Or it could be The Black Glove, Talia Al Ghul, etc. I'm sure there's more but my batman knowledge isn't that in depth. I hope if anything Nolan doesn't listen to anyone on any gorram internet forums and just does his thing. The Dark Knight was beautiful and I trust him to make a great film again, so long as he doesn't try to please the world by making the focus of the whole movie what villain is coolest.
For all we know there may not even be a main villain, and the conflict could be between batman and gotham, as he is a wanted criminal now.

(As for the brittany murphey as harley quinn rumour, if it's true, I'm sure she'll do fine but damn I would rather have seen Zooey Deschanel)

The penguin and the riddler together! :D
You just had to put that mental image in my head, didn't you?

OT: Killer Croc. I mean, they spent so much time hyping him up for Arkham Asylum, but they never even made him interesting! I think he should compensate for that by being totally epic in teh next movie.

The clock king, because I would love to see someone who uses his puncuality as his main weapon.

I'm not sure how many of these villains can be realistically done, I do think catwoman will be in the new movie but not as a villain, in the comics i have read they always been more like playful adversary's. Plus since Batman is now on the run its the perfect time for a team up.

bane, but just make him a muscle bound cage figther or something, since it has to be realistic. Maybe throw in catwoman for some interesting fight scenes.

Bane, Clayface, Scarecrow, and Azrael would be the perfect combination to thematically follow The Dark Knight.

Scarecrow.

As in, a GOOD version.

But the riddler will do fine for now. Just, don't make eddie murphy play him. It just isn't right.

Just to quickly point out, in the official final draft of the Dark Knight screenplay, Harvey is dead.

"Gordon, horrified, RUNS to the edge- peers down-

Dent lies at the bottom of the hole, his neck broken. DEAD.

The coin stops spinning, GOOD SIDE UP."

As for the symbolism of the "sunny side up" coin, I think it's more metaphorical that Dent will be remembered for his heroic deeds, not his brief murderous spree. And as far as I can tell, there's no incentive for Dent to be kept alive, since he would either A) Die of his wounds (as we've all pointed out it's a miracle he's walking about to begin with) and B) be just as likely to repeat his criminal actions. Gordon, being commissioner would never trust him, especially after shooting Batman and almost killing his son. And the montage at the end of the film shows Gordon giving the eulogy at his funeral. All the cops rush into the building too after he's pronounced dead as "Batman murders him." And as Gordon points out, 2 of the 5 people he killed were cops, and they couldn't just "sweep that under the rug."

Personally I think Two-Face's character arc was masterfully executed in the Dark Knight and there was nothing else to be done with it. It wasn't meant to fulfill the comic arcs or moments, but to simply be an honest character that lived in that moment.
