When people harass the F2P players, how do they know their F2P and don't just suck. For instance, I paid for TF2 but I'm still not all that good.

Also, if a server really wants to do that, F2P players aren't even going to want to play there anyways.

YOu know that there's plugins to ban people with halos as well?

It's a wonderful way to blacklist your server.

Calm down chaps.

i.... think thats a horrible idea. i mean, dont get me wrong, i had tf 2 long before this f2p thing but.... wth?! whats up with that elitist bullcrap? i mean, sure, they are free to do as they wish-its their server, but come on.....

i am seriously disappointed in those guys. im DEEPLY disappointed.

you guys make me sick.

and no, im not overreacting.

on the other hand, this is one way to avoid jackass filled servers as f2p player. so what the hell, seems like more useful for f2p than admins themselves!

To me there are three kind of people in TF2:
-Noobs; those who have just bought/downloaded TF2 and don't know that Heavies are Medics best buddies nor that Spies can disguise themselves.

-Average players; those who know that Spychecking is important and that Medics can turn people invincible for 8-9 seconds. They also know that TF2 is not Modern Warfare 2.

-Pros; can even deflect sniper bullets with Pyro's airblast.

There are no difference between F2P player and someone who has bought the game.
But I do understand that some people wants to try to play in servers where the other team wins every match in less than a minute(it has happened).

I saw this post on the TF2 forums a bit ago and thought to bring it here, so you all know that TF2 is now free to play which leads to two main groups of players, the guys who paid for it and the guys who didn't. Recently a server plugin was released that automatically kicks any F2P player from the server as they try to join, people seem to be really against the plugin calling it "discrimination" as others really like it because it keeps servers "noob free". I was just wondering what the escapist community would think of something like this.
Their server, their rules.

That's the great thing, this doesn't need anyone's consent other than the person who actually runs the servers, it's their (rented) property, they can do what they like. This was made for a noob free experience without having to conform to "the man's" rules, i.e. some corporate run servers or worse, corporate run linking servers on user-hosted matches.

And it's nothing as bad as the COD community is hugely divided by THREE separated $15 map packs, the community is divided by who has what packs.

TF2 community ALL have the same map selection, but private servers are divided by private interests.

It's bloody stupid, that's what it is. Free to play player does not equal crappy player, just as a person who bought it will not equal greatest player alive. All it is is people being elitist pricks.
This pretty much. The plugin won't even do what one could only assume it's meant to really (that is, keep bad players out and let good players in). Want to keep the newest of the new TF2 players out until they learn the game? This might do it, sort of, but not for long. Eventually you'll have F2P players who are legitimately good getting kicked. It may even happen already for that matter.

A much better solution would be to keep your server off of the main server list for matchmaking, and maybe even password protect it if you have a large enough group of regulars and a forum in which to distribute the password which new players are unlikely to find or bother to find. But even still, the latter is a good recipe for a stagnant community.

TLDR: It's a stupid idea that will never achieve the desired result because assuming all F2P players currently suck and will always suck is flawed reasoning to say the least. On the plus side, I only see it hurting the servers that use it in the long run since there will be fewer new players replacing old ones that stop playing or leave for other servers. This sort of elitism is exactly the sort that will probably back fire long term.

I can't argue with the use of technology.

But I have a REALLY hard time with any server that runs this plug in. It doesn't help new players learn, and facilitates a discriminatory mentality within the TF community. one of my favorite aspects of TF2 is how fun the community is. They've been accepting and intelligent. The utilization of a plug in such as this splinters away from it.

If servers want to run this plug in, then I hold no leverage over those that run it, but I want to option to locate these servers, so I can avoid playing on them.

This really annoys me! I've been interested in TF2 for a while now. I'm not into FPS's in general, or PC gaming as a whole, for that matter. But TF2 looked different. Team-play, class-based, different graphical style than brown grit. I was still skeptical about FPS's, so I didn't want to splash out the money for it.

Then it went FTP, and there was no excuse for me not to get it. But everyone was new to the game at some point. It's a general ettiquette rule that if you're an experienced player, you give a bit of help to someone new at a game. I know, I know, most people don't go by this, but still! This kind of thing really makes me angry!

As one of those F2P players, I'm finding this a little insulting. I'm sorry I never had the computer necessary to run this game (I was living in the Dark Ages before), and when I do finally have one, you say I'm a noob and I don't deserve to play on your "special" server. Yes, I'm still getting used to the game, but I've been playing PC and console FPS since I was 6. I do know how to play games. I can figure shit out. I don't do n00bish things like mic spam, ask for trades, or sit around. I do try.
As long as this doesn't become a widespread trend, I'm fine with it. I'd probably ragequit those servers anyway, or get booted or something.

I like it.
As an admin on a TF2 server, I am suprised that the high ammounts of idiocity going out of F2P Players. While I know not all F2P Players are like that, Almost every one on there is a idiot/ jerk/ moron/ prick.

Its better to block off a few instead of letting in many fools.

I see it as a way to keep the douchebags huddled together behind their impenetrable wall of pretentiousness. Probably for the best, because I'm sure plenty of F2P people don't want to join a game where the community is against them from the start.

You're right! Nobody ON THE PLANET can afford the *GASP* $0.49 to get another paid account! What an effective system!

It seems a little mean but understandable. You don't pick the fat kid who doesn't know the difference between a baseball and a basketball first. I play on an all-inclusive server with people who want to help them learn the game but if you want your server to have less chance of ignorant or confused players I can certainly see the appeal in it.

And if you are a free player and you don't like being discriminated against, why not spend a buck to become a full player? You won't be any less n00bish but you won't be getting kicked by this plugin. It would also show you are somewhat committed to the game, even a little bit.

Trust me, you can tell. When people who are on defense run out the gate and ram their face against the nearest chain-link fence, waiting for it to open(which it won't, because on Defense you are allowed to set up in the map so you can, y'know, defend.) It is hilarious but also makes it clear what you're dealing with.

Assuming the free player plays on the same level as a non-free player, the only distinction is that they have limited backpack capacity and trading capabilities.(This is so people don't make a lot of free accounts and idle for items to trade over to their main account.) They also usually have dull/stupid names with numbers in them and no avatar but there's no rule about that.
