A few days ago I read in international news that in flooded parts of Brisbane there are sharks swimming along the main roads. Can that possibly be right? 0_0
I'm fairly sure that's unconfirmed, but absolutely believable. Queensland is a fairly tropical place, and the floods got seriously deep in some places. A few bull sharks floating around isn't too far of a stretch.

Australia is too peaceful. You aren't on a brink of war like the rest of us..so no, our news tends to be much more colorful than yours.

Look on the bright side--no news is good news. You should be happy no one has to hear about your country (mainly because nothing truly that bad ever happens there).
Lately though, we've had the worst luck with natural disasters.
Um...much worse flooding in Brazil, remember? Several hundred deaths.

I imagine being on the brink of war is pretty awful too. Difference is we can't blame anyone.

Unfortunatly I doubt the Kiwis would take us...
Of course they would. Collectively, Australians are the nicest people I've met in the world! Unless the NZers are so nice they actually make you guys look like jerks..in which case, I would need to start making a great many friends there.

The Brisbane River, which unsurprisingly runs right through the city of Brisbane, is home to an estimated 500 bull sharks. Royal Australian Navy divers have been using anti-shark equipment while working in the river post-flood.

Sweet Jesus. I hope those areas have been thoroughly evacuated. Imagine yourself still out there - I'd be afraid even to get around in a small rowboat for fear of getting attacked and eaten. x_x

I heard that Australia is about to be hit by a cyclone that would but Hurricane Katrina to shame. The thing looks fucking massive.

The flooding in Australia, to my knowledge, was actually worse than those in Brazil. The deaths in Brazil were mostly due to the poor state the country is in compared to Australia. The Australian floods were managed amazingly well by the government, police and service groups. In Brazil it was a free for all.

Did some cursory research, and these ugly suckers are apparently a rather aggressive breed.
And possibly indirectly responsible for the novel Jaws. Huh.

Dear me, I'm glad I don't live in Australia. You become complacent around nature there even for an instant... and it kicks you in the nads with a 100m running start.

Usually you have to get a lotion for that.

Of course I hear news from Australia, I work in the media in Melbourne.

Ah, ok...so they should stop comparing Yasi to Katrina then, by the same logic?

You mean Queenslanders. In Sydney the worst thing we've had is a "heatwave", which is basically a yearly occurrence in one form or another which you have to admit is hardly something to whinge about in Australia of all places.
It bloody is when a few years ago, the heat we've got today was a 'record high'.

Cyclone Yasi didn't hit Australia in full. It skimmed the coast and only affected a few towns, thank God. It doesn't look like anyone was killed.

By the way, the floods earlier in the year claimed a lot of life and made thousands of people homeless. Brisbane's CBD took damage and tax has been brought in for all Australians to pay to repair the damage. If a major city in the USA was damaged by flood it would make the news too. Just because another country had more deaths does not mean everyone must not talk about it.
