Poll: Objective-based modes: no xp for kills, no k/d stats

Most of the time I play a multiplayer shooter, which has objective-based modes (which don't just involve killing people), I notice how most people just don't care about the objectives and treat any objective-based mode as team deathmatch.
This is a big problem. Team work is nowhere to be seen mostly.
Therefore I think it would be a great idea to give no experience points whatsoever (or a very very small amount) for kills in objective-based modes.

Another thing is the obsession about kill/death ratios. Many people (including me sometimes) are so obsessed about their's that they won't do what is needed to accomplish an objective (like sacrificing yourself for the objective). Instead they camp or run pointlessly through the map in order to make some kills.

As far as I'm concerned kills and deaths in objective-based modes shouldn't be recorded at all as they do nothing for the accomplishment of an objective and are just a way to show of your elite skills.

Both actions I've listed should in theory stop people from abusing objective-based gamemodes as team deathmatch because they wouldn't be rewarded anymore and it'd become pointless to play like that.
It could make those modes unpopular though because people are used to killing enemies without end. Another reason why Armed Assault is rather unpopular because there you don't kill much as it is not really a shooter contrary to popular believe.

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Good idea, let's just get entire teams to stand on flags and get in slapfights.

So let's just say, hypothetically I'm in one of these games, and I'm doing a great job in beating back the enemy team. I'm killing them before they get anywhere near our objectives. I end the game with a K/D of 30-2, but I have no "defend" medals because none of the enemies got near our flags.

Did I help the team? Should I get no points?

Hm, naw. I like getting exp in objective based modes. It's so then when I do objectives well, I get lots of exp. :) Not getting any exp for doing good would suck. :(

You should get points for defending the objective then, not for actual killing.

Kinda like Communism: Works on paper, but never in practice.
I am the kind of person who will go straight for the objective in objective based games. But I am not stupid. I know we need people to get out there and confuse the enemy by keeping their numbers low or in disarray. We also need people defending our stuff while players like me try to get the enemy's stuff. Why should you not get points just because you play the role of fighter?

While it is true that in some games *cough* Black Ops *cough* people tend to altogether ignore objectives in favor of kills, it would be kind of unfair to give no points for kills. Personally, I don't much care for K/D ratios, and tend to play with friends so I have a fairly biased opinion of what people do. A good solution would be to give less points for kills, and more points for capturing flags, or destroying/defending objectives; sadly, the monkey pits that are XBL and PSN will always have people who are more interested in shooting everything that moves than actually helping the team.

I agree here, because The last time I was playing Domination the average 12 year old was gloating about his 30 kills... me and a friend just bitched out at him because he wouldn't shut up about it and he hadn't helped take or defend a base. Its annoying as hell, that said he is the 12 year old bastard we all hate.

So... basically every time I kill someone, I'm defending the objective? In which case, kills will get me points?

If your team won, then yes. In a team-based fps game, ideally team victory should be the important part of the game, not individual stats.

lol isn't that what already happens in fps games, people just get in slapfight clusterfucks, trying to rake in kills?
and i think idea with an objective mode is that in that situation, how many people you may kill doesn't matter, what does matter is if you completely your objective.

OP: I think it would be great to have objective modes that don't reward kills etc, and instead encourage players to act stragetically to achieve a goal. however, i don't think they should necesarily replace the standard deathmatch killfest, as that can also be quite entertaining

I don't think they should stop awarding XP for kills altogether, but it should be severely cut down. Tracking K/D is idiotic though and it should be slashed.

I think they just need to change the amount of XP awarded for completing the objective be higher. In most games, getting an objective is worth about as much as 1 kill, maybe 2, but you're more likely to die in the process of completing an objective. If they made getting objectives worth more, closer to the amount of XP you would get for say 10 or 15 kills, then I'm sure a lot more people would be willing to actually play the objective instead of just kill farming for XP.

I think taking away both is probably for the better. I mean people used to enjoy playing the games for their intrinsic value of playing. Now you have people who are too concerned with their stats and rpg style exp and leveling. Seriously, wtf? I want to play a shooter that is about first person shooting not leveling up and stuff. When there are objectives, people should be playing a role with appropriate correspondence to the game type.
A great example of contrast is playing the original Team Fortress compared to CoD. TF was fun to play because of the objectives, CoD can be fun but feels like a grindfest to maintain your stats.
Screw stats, just play.

I really gotta agree with this.

I played Halo 3 from the day it was released, and I still play it when I have friends over, because it's just plain fun. I bought Halo Reach day one as well, but I haven't played it in months because after a while all I cared about was getting new armor, but it took too much EXP to get new stuff, so I just said fuck it. I think if they hadn't put that exp unlocked armor in there I probably would have played the game longer since I wouldn't be frustrated by low scoring matches as much.

Psst, you can do that already, but don't tell anyone - it's a secret. ;)

Let's see, in Bad Company you get 400 points for destroying the MCOMs, and 50 points for a kill. In Call of Duty you get 500 points for destroying objectives, and 50 points for a kill (in gametypes with respawns).

So... do you want the points to be even less than that?

Yes, they should get XP. Kills are important. But no, they shouldn't get KDR credit for it. People will camp out in corners trying to get just a few kills but no deaths so they can brag about their 2.00 KDR (which is actually really bad as far as bragging rights goes). If it wasn't counted in objective based games, they'd either have to start helping, or join a game mode where it does get counted instead (which should only be deathmatch games).
