I've heard arguments in other forums about which Elder Scrolls game was better; Morrowind or Oblivion? I've heard arguments defending both sides, and I was wondering, which do you think is better? And why?
Personally, I preferred Morrowind, even though Oblivion is not a bad game on its own. I liked Morrowind because of the storyline, and the environment. There are a lot of different factions involved, far more than Oblivion, and the whole area was more diverse and interesting. Going to a new area usually meant a change in scenery, while Oblivion has green hills, green forests, and a few snowy mountains. The game just seemed much more immersive and alive. It also doesn't have that ridiculous level scaling, giving you a sense of accomplishment when you found a rare piece of armour. But then, on the other hand, it has a broken combat system (where it's nearly impossible to hit anything with a skill below 30) and switching back and forth between melee and magic was clunky and difficult to do when you've got a few enemies screaming toward you. It also has the problem of being able to kill an important plot character, which forced me to restart on one occasion. Despite that, the game was still fun and I really enjoyed it.
Oblivion has a nice, fluid combat and magic system, it had voice acting which should have been better (not enough voice actors) and the Dark Brotherhood faction is my favourite part of the whole game. The problem I have with it is this; it's too much of the same thing. You have dungeons limited to caves, ruins, forts, and oblivion planes. And they all have the same basic look, you might get a few with something interesting or different, but they are too rare. Also, the levelling system. I started to lose interest in the game once I realized that every single marauder I ran into past level 25 had a full set of daedric armour, making the best armour in the game completely accessible. This should not happen, the best armour should be rare, and be a pain in the butt to get your greedy little hands on. (Morrowind) And since enemies level with you, you could just never go to sleep, raise all your skills to a high level, and breeze through the game on level 1. It has a nice, shiny environment, a decent combat system, and an average plot, but the rest of it just feels shoddy. I also just remembered, you could get to the top of any of the factions with minimal difficulty, as long as you just did the quests. In Morrowind you actually had to train in the appropriate skills to advance, it makes sense that you have to be good at magic to be the Archmage. In Oblivion, you can take over as Archmage and not know a thing about magic. It's just another of those things that takes away from the immersion.
Again, Oblivion is not a bad game, it's just average, and Morrowind was a lot better for me. So, what are your opinions?
I apologize in advance if this has been done to death. It's my first topic, please don't hurt me too much.
