*Summoning Shield of flame warding, lvl. 3*

Right guys. If there's one thing I know, it's that people always love a good discussion. And if there's another thing I know, it is that they don't always tend to agree.

Here's the deal; The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best scoring game ever, and has been so for more than a decade with it's 97.66% of 100% positive response overall, from different reviews.

Don't misunderstand me now, the reason I'm starting this thread is not because I hate the game ('Cause I love it). It's simply the outcome of a longer discussion in which my friend pointed out why he did not think it to be even in the top 10 games, of all time.

One of his biggest arguments was; "People always say Ocarina of Time helped push forward the age of 3D-gaming, when in reality Super Mario 64 did that, and not Ocarina of Time."

Now that surprised me, since I had always thought everyone in the whole damn world liked it. A LOT. Which is why I'm asking all of you.

97.66% is a near-perfect score. So, is Ocarina of Time a near-perfect/perfect game, or do you believe it to be overrated?

Why? Or why not?

I leave you to speculate...

[Edit] After CK76 made a post regarding comparison to today's game/technology (I think), let me just elaborate:

That's not what I'm hoping to achieve by making this topic. I want people to evaluate it according to the first time they played it. Preferably when it first game out. Though the game is the highest scoring game ever, I'm not asking anyone to compare it to the technology or games we have today. I'm hoping to get people to answer yes or no, in regards to their first playthrough of the game, and only that game.

If we evaluate it, using today's standards, of course it isn't going to measure up, and that's not what I'm trying to do here. I loved it, and I voted "No". So that's that!

It is nearly perfect, yes.
If they would remake it in todays graphics, it would be perfect

And the 3D-thing isn't the point, it's the gameplay!
Of course, but when "some people" discuss these kinds of things, they often look at how a given game had an impact on the future.

Ocarina of Time had an impact on other Zelda games, but my buddy (as do others) believe that it was Super Mario 64 that had the bigger impact on future gaming.

And make the Hyrule field less bland and boring, THEN it would be perfect. (That comes from an not so big OoT Fan, because like Portal I couldn't think of anything bad then while it's not under my favourites.)

I found it boring and incredibly over hyped.
But i suppose back 10-15 years ago that was probably the best thing.

Not by any stretch. OoT sqeezed the maximum out of the aging Nintendo 64, but this isn't very relevant as games on the pc were far more advanced already.

The game was great for a N64 game, nothing more.

You have to stop jugding it by todays standards. The graphic was very good for N64 standards. The story is excellent and good written. Even better than most game-plots we have now. But the major point are the characters. Nearly every character in OoT has their own personality and agenda and they were all quite loveable (Well except Navi of course).

Opinions are not only relative to the individual but also to context.
Mario 64 may have revolutionised 3D gaming, but it did so in a platforming game which whilst incredible didn't exactly reach great depths in terms of story telling. Ocarina of Time gave us a gorgeous 3D world (rather than Mario's isolated mini-worlds) with an epic story. Add the fact that you could see the progression of that world and your effects on it by skipping back and forth in time. Also the side quests, the atmosphere the music.

I figure it was just a huge jump forward. Whereas nowadays there's very little to shock us since we acclimatise to the changes in games by seeing constant small changes as opposed to great leaps.

It's a good game, sure. But it is not 10/10 good.
Yeah, I agree. But is there really any game that deserves 10/10?

There are terrible aspects of pretty much every game.

Perhaps at it's time, I only played it a few years ago on an emulator and couldn't get into it. Maybe just not my type of game.

no shit. going into 3d cut the game down massively from LTTP. And yet people lap that shit up. It was mediocre at best and it took till Wind Waker before the whole 3D zelda thing really clicked (And even that had issues with the sailing)

... not that Majora's mask is bad, just flawed. not quite as up the arse flawed as OOT though.

I think it was the greatest game of it's age, if that makes any sense. Highest rated game for *Then* though now it isn't. that certainly doesn't make it overrated though. Its the natural flow of things. They just improve on the backs of those which came before.

Finally played it myself a few weeks ago.

It's the same as every other 3D Zelda game that came after it, only they IMPROVED upon the formula for follow up games.

I still like Wind Waker the best, thus meaning that fanboys consider my opinions shit, because Wind Waker is often seen as a weak Link in the series.

This is actually one hyped game I can say is extremely good, and not only due to nostalgia rose-tinting my views on it, I played it on an emulator a while back and i actually enjoyed it more now that I understood the text (I was much younger when I played it the first time). I think it is the most brilliant N64 game out there and better than a lot of GameCube and Wii titles
