For all you people saying the graphics of the game are bad, think again...
Graphics isn't just about "graphics", it's also about the feel and the art.

If you are comparing it to modern games, then you're looking at it all wrong- as a few people in this thread have made sure to correct you already. For its time- I would say Ocarina was the best in its day, although I would almost it and its sequel are better than Twilight Princess.

The graphics may not be the best, but at the time there were frickin awesome. You can't base a system that has been obsolete for 2 generations and compare it to a PS3 or 360. As for the game itself, it doesn't top my list but it makes the top 5, Ocarina of time just had a feel that seemed to fit.

Don't argue for the sake of arguing, spaz91... yea- they were "bad" but it was a 64 bit console. Thats like stating oranges taste like oranges even after you bake em with apples...

awesome game - first game i played on a N64 - must admit tho there were a few things that annoyed me -

the replayability of it doesnt excite me (maybe i should just say the replayability was poo)

the story line makes me soo jealous... ...why cant i come up with something tht gud

and "Hey Listen" - got a bit repetitive after ohh about 5 secs!

but apart from that OoT is an awesome game and the horse aspect is always great fun

I think your missing my point.
I didn't expect it to have good graphics, it clearly wouldn't but that doesn't make them good!

It's not the graphics that ruined it for me really. When I played it (for roughly 2 hours) it felt dead. The only thing that kept me playing was the hope for the brilliance that I had hoped for (possibly over hyped?) but nothing.

The problem with this OP, is that you're viewing it from a modern perspective. It's like going back to play the original King's Quest, or even the Zork games (Who remembers those?). They were great for their time!

But we aren't in that time. You've been introduced to games with slicker gameplay, better graphics, and overall more modern presentation from an industry that has only grown for over 2 decades. You can't expect to understand or really appreciate the older games if you weren't there when they were released. Now, some people CAN do that, but I'd say the majority can't. Go ahead and try to play 'Quest for Glory: So You Want to be a Hero' and see if you like that game. Or the original Space Quest. Heck, wasn't there a youtube or gametrailers video with some 13 year old kid saying how crappy Golden eye was? That kid was pushing strained peas out his ass when that game came out!

Simply put: If you weren't there, you can't understand how it impacted gaming or gamers. Some people can enjoy an old game and get an IDEA of how the players of that time would have enjoyed it, but only those who were there can truly get it.
I understand this point of view but I don't stand by it.
Like I've said just because it was 'good at the time' doesnt mean it is good now. Yet people still think it's the best game ever! Twilight Princess has all the good aspects of OoT and with brilliant grapihcs yet people think OoT is better?
Again, I'd say it's because you weren't there. People who played OoT when it first came out saw it as an amazing transformation of the character they loved in Link into 3D. Never been done before! Crazy! IT was new, it was fresh, it was awesome. Twilight Princess, as you said, had all the good aspects, just better graphics? Well so what? Where was the 'awe' factor? Where was the fresh? The new? TP was a great game that was well received, but where OoT blew players minds when it came out, TP was just prettier.

I don't expect you to 'get it'. You weren't there.

So what you're saying is that all the people who love OoT simply love it cos it was awesome when it came out and they played it when it first came out? I think I understand now.

Nooo... They're awesome and the music too.
But what it really comes down to for a game is gameplay and Ocarina of Time is so awesome.

Only thing I don't like about Ocarina of Time - aside from the lack of a 'kill Navi' secret ending - is that it's because of OoT's relationship to Link to the Past that everyone says all the Zelda games are the same.

Yay.

So your saying that people now a days wont like OoT because they didn't experience and us older gamers can't appreciate it because the graphics are poop?

1. When you look at today's games for: graphics, story, music, game play even though the graphics are good the story/game play is usually lacking, GTA4 for example. The graphics may not be what they are today, but the game is still 5/5 for the rest.

2. Not only is OoT #4 on Wii's virtual console top downloads, but Link to the past is #3, so don't give me that people prefer graphics over game play garbage.

I'm ashamed to admit that I got stuck on this very early on within the first dungeon trying to defeat the Spider 'boss'.

Simply, could not do it. Something to do with trying to correctly 'lunge' into the screen when I don't have a Stereoscopic display...

Never got to see Hyrule field.

Sad face.

You know what other game is terrible? Super Mario Bros. Man, the graphics are ass, and the dialog is just terrible. "Your princess is in another castle"? What the hell is up with that?

Not at all, I'm just saying they're terrible. And you can't deny that.
Depends what they're being compared to.

A lot of people weren't at the Holocaust, but they hate it.

A lot of people never met Jesus, but they love him.

...Contrary to the above, I agree with your point.

I personally think that since you're already so biased against it that it will never live up to your expectations. I think you should play the entire game before you judge it. With only 2 hours of gameplay you saw maybe 2% of what the game had to offer.

The first time I played the game was also when it was released. True by today's comparisons the game isn't very good looking but you are also failing to take into account the limited ability of the hardware at the time. It should tell you something if you had to buy an 'Expansion Pack' with an additional 8 megs of RAM to play later 64 games on higher settings.

For me, what really set this game apart from any other zelda was the entire experience. The first time I set foot on Hyrule field I couldn't see the edge of the playable area. Unheard of during that time. The excitement of wielding a sword in 3D with accurate controls; unheard of. The feeling that you were a part of this world and not an observer; something that developers are still reaching for. But most of all it had a story and a good story. For the games I played at the time, that was unheard of.

Sure Twilight Princess took most of those elements and reproduced them and with better graphics, but in the end the story is what did it for me. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game, but Ocarina will always hold a special place in my video game heart
