There are many good stories in Oblivion. But to me Oblivion is the best out of the lot. There is a massive amount of things to do, Some very interesting quest lines and a lot of freedom when it comes to crafting your character.
Admittedly they do put a large amount of effort in it but somehow it doesn't ring the right bell for me as morrowind did where the freedom you had goes as far as to walk right up to god and kill him.
Meanwhile the story in oblivion seems a little out of place as you are not the main hero of the land but rather the person in the background making the hero look good. It kinda feels like your playing zelda only your not link your a little troll just out of camera shot setting useful items in chests and pots for link to pick up when he wants to.

Of those games Mass Effect is superior in pretty well every way. However customization seems to be a big draw for you so I might actually recommend Oblivion on PC. I don't really care for Oblivion but it's my opinion that playing on a console is handicapping the entire experience.
Superior in gameplay and freedom? Not really.

Oblivion gives you true freedom. Massive customization from a range of species, the gameplay is solid (simple, but fun) and the world is a blast to roam around. And it contains some amazing quest lines.

Mass Effect was fun, but I'd hardly call it an RPG, It is far too linear.
In gameplay, yes. Freedom, you're right I suppose. Oblivion grants the freedom to roam around an incredibly bland and generic world, plus the freedom to make meaningless decisions. Oblivion, in my opinion, is devoid of real rpg potential. It's like playing dnd without a DM.

If you havn't played the first Mass Effect yet, I'd definitely recommend picking it up. It's dirt cheap on Amazon, and you can get 50+ hours of play out of it before you get bored. Combat's a little wonky, but After you get a feel for the handling it's not noticeable.

In Mass Effect you are free to roam through a galaxy full of mostly empty worlds. Oblivion is littered with life and scenic vistas.
Scenic vistas, sure. Life? I can't agree. Bethesda isn't very good at making their world feel alive, for all their ability to craft a pretty one.

]There was countless widelife, many other mystical creatures as well. There was also many keeps and Inns all over the place, not to mention several large cities that were full of NPCs.
Simply putting bland npcs and wildlife in a world does not, in my opinion, constitute "life". Bethesda's npcs and worlds, while always pretty, just feel so robotic.

I'm going to have to say Fallout 3. Better controls and It's really just Oblivion with guns, mutants and an interesting story and ending. If you want anything, you're not likely to get it.

Which XBOX 360 game would you advise me to buy and why? I like games with a very extensive storyline that really pulls me in and also a lot of room to do whatever the hell I like, which is why I'm leaning towards Oblivion. I've always liked the look of Fable 2 and it seems like it could take me a while to complete. But I'm also a very big fan of Sci-Fi games and Mass Effect looks like it also has a large story line that I could get into but less customisation. I would go for Mass Effect 2 but it's not on the XBOX marketplace and I can't be bothered to wait for delivery or pay for it.

If there's another game you'd think I would enjoy then please tell me.
Well,

Fable 2- My favorite console game of all time, but I wouldn't call it's story "extensive".
Oblivion- Huge game, but the story is pretty weak and short. In fact, you'll spend most of your time doing completely unrelated things.
Mass Effect- The most extensive story out of the three, although it's also the least open. It also very much feels like the first part of a trilogy.

Mass Effect, deffinitely.

I was never really interested in it and always felt left out when people went reebling all over the place about it and its sequels but I bought Mass Effect in the Steam Sale because it was super cheap and it is so freaking awesome. I enjoy everything about it and I don't remember having a richer RPG experience. It has totally rescued me from the pit of cynicism I was falling into about RPGs after playing Dragon Age. Seriously, get Mass Effect.

Okay, I went with Oblivion and let me tell you why.

It gives you that "room to do what you want" that the other two don't. Mass Effect probably haas a better story and you can act like a super lawful guy or a kind of badass jerk but they both are on the same mission and play all of the same quests. From the first moment that you emerge into the sun in Oblivion you can just run off into the wilderness and go where ever you want.

My girlfriend played for over 100 hrs and never did any story missions! The other two games are great too but I would lean slightly towars this one. However I think you'll have a good time with any of them.

BTW: While I still really enjoyed FableII it is my least favorite of the three.

I have beaten Fable 2, but i still play it. Its story is ok, but the ending was not good. I have never played Mass Effect 2 or Elder Scrolls IV, but a few friends have and they recommend them.

I would say go for Metal Gear Solid 4 or maybe InFamous. You can also go for many other fantasic games like Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, God of War 3 or GoW Collection, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1 and 2 to name a few worthy titles.

Oops, sorry , i just noticed you said Xbox, my bad, shame you can't play these games then, hehe :p

I'm just teasing you. I'm just jealous you can play Mass Effect 1 and 2 on a console where I have to play them on the PC because they are awesome games tbh :)

I voted Mass Effect 2, cause Fable 2, while fun, is very, VERY short, and can get a little boring after a bit. Oblivion is kinda a tie between Mass Effect, but I voted down cause you said 360. If your going to buy Oblivion, buy it on PC. Cause a modded Oblivion is 1,000,000 times better than the original. I guess I'm so spoiled by modded Oblivion, the idea of playing through a original 360 version is kinda meh.

Mass Effect, if only for one simple reason. In all three games, your overall goal is to save the world/the galaxy from pure evil. Mass Effect's universe is the only one I genuinely WANTED to save, because it was the only one I gave a damn about.

Yes, Oblivion is very pretty, and the amount of things to do in it is a bit crazy, but the world just feels like it's a cheap play of lord of the rings, with maybe 5 people constantly changing costumes whenever your not looking. Every male elf in the game has the same voice actor. There are three kinds of elves. That's three species, and every male has the SAME voice actor. Seriously, people may tell you the VA isn't that big of a deal, but it is very immersion breaking when you hear someone talking to themselves. I get the feeling they spent their entire voice actor budget on Sir Patrick Stewart. Also immersion breaking, enemies that level up, and gain new equipment leveling up. Are those bandits in Daedric armor? Why, yes they are.

I'd go on, but I see you've made your decision to get Oblivion and Mass Effect. Good show. While I rip on Oblivion, it still is a very fun game, and if you get the Shivering Isles expansion, it becomes a great game.

mass effect period. one its trilogy with 50+ hours between me1 and 2, the ending of me1 is about as epic a game ending as i have ever seen. your save game form me1 imports into me2 and adds to the experience.

only way i would recommend oblivion is if you got it for pc with all the dlc and added about 20 to 40 mods into it. mods make that game alot better overall, still a fairly weak story and after so many oblivion gates you just want to take a nuke and blow the things up it gets so old. but the overhaul mods and such for oblivion cover up alot of the blandness of the world and some remove the scale leveling or tweak it. makes the whole game more interesting.

shivering isles was a great bit of dlc better than the actual main plot. and some of the side quest in oblivion were more intersting than the whole period like the assasins guild, and some of thieves guild missions and a few odds and ends were way more memorable than the actual main plot.

fallout 3 another games has some amazing mods for pc. But another game where the main quest outside a few parts it mostly meh and brutally short. you could skip all the side quests and finish f03 in about 6 hours, tho some of the side quests like oblivion were better than the main plot. one big plus is the lack of oblivion gates tho.
