I believe that is a hard drive problem, not confident though, remove and put back in your hard drive and try again. If not, hope you got a warranty.

E74 is red ring of death, if your error code is that, send it in for repairs, or you know, buy a curgen one that has the problems fixed.
..or you know, take 20 minutes and fix it yourself.

Very easy, and I've done it many times.
What is the process for this? I don't have a 360 but maybe the OP could do with it?

What does curgen mean?

RRoD is a simple heating problem. Microsoft uses these cheap little band-aid like heat absorbents that probably cost about 1/4 of a cent.

You can fix this by replacing those with pennies wrapped in electrical tape.

There are thousands of videos on Youtube about this process and how to fix it and most are really detailed.

No not really. People who make stupid statements just to piss people off and annoy them are trolls. He was just talking about a real life experience.
Hey, that's fine if he had 2 360's bite it on him and they made fun of 360 at his local game store. I've had 2 fail on me as well. The Troll part comes from him quoting that stupid Game Informer survey as though it were a fact, which falls well in line with your "people who make stupid statements just to piss people off" rules.
And the fact that you called him an obvious troll isn't making "a stupid statement just to piss people off". Sorry, had to be said.
Yeah, you're right... maybe I should have taken a survey of how many people thought he was a troll and quoted the results from that.
You could stop trying to police the forums and leave it to the mods? Or perhaps ignore the "trolling" and avoid adding fuel to the fire?

Just a couple of suggestions there.

That's cool. I enjoy that people find cheap ways to fix these problems rather than having to send back to the manufacturer.
The Penny, The Towel, The Off/On.

I'll remember these if I have problems with [bAlan Wake[/b] - still waiting...

Hmmm and you're not trying to police the forums by asking me to stop pointing out trolls? I was also not the only one to call him a troll either so I've obviously got a point. Also, now you are saying that he's trolling when just a few posts ago you were not. Try following your own advice and stop defending the troll while you're at it.

Not upset, but would prefer if you would speak to personal experience, opinion or facts next time you talk about any console, not just 360. I respect the people on this board as well as PS3 owners enough that I won't blatantly flame their console of choice.
I might be missing something, but isn't that exactly what I did? That is speak from a personal experience.
I've already said I had no problem with your personal experience. I never get offended by someone's opinion or retelling of their experiences. It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience with your 360 and you ended up switching to PS3, but there are way more people out there who are wholly satisfied with their 360 experience.

Many of them, myself included, really hate that god-damned survey because it's a gross misrepresentation of what we feel is an overall positive experience, and is the equivalent of political mudslinging in the console war. "54%" is made up flame bait bullshit and I'd appreciate if everyone here would stop trying to pass it off as fact.

Don't have an Xbox, but the Red ring of Death (three circles) is the most common. And scary!

I have only had my Xbox for a year so it's still doing great. I did have the red ring once but that was because the power went out while i was playing.

I am the only person that I know who is still on his origional 360. My DVD drive did stop reading the disks after about 2 years, but I just replaced the drive myself, and its working perfectly again :)
It's my old faithful, but it's true they don't make tech like they used to.
Same here, my circle of friends all have the box of x as well and at last count only 2 of us have (so far) gotten away without suffering any issues.

no worries. I know I was really happy with my 360 as well, but having 2 break down in less than a year (the first I had owned for a while, but the second I had just bought) and not being a 30hr+ a week console gamer just got me pissed. On top of that my girlfriends brother was having trouble with his 3rd or 4th as well, but I have a friend who's still sitting on his 360 from when they launched (I cant' remember when that was).

Though, I think the reason why a lot of people were passing it as fact - including myself - was mircosoft's response which basically boiled down to a shrug. But, that being said I know I was pissed when my PS2 broke down way back when (before Sony brought their console's reliability up to par)...So...yeah

My first one stopped reading disks. I know what happened to it and it was not Microsoft's fault (it was my sister's). My second Xbox has never given me any issues.

In the first week of UK release my household bought two Xboxs. Both red-ringed pretty fast (both came from the same batch and the heat sink compound had been incorrectly applied). Both were replaced promptly and in good order. Since that time I have seen 4 more RRODs. Calling Microsoft for a returns box has turned in to a bit of a nuisance but pretty routine. And no, I have no idea why we have such a failure rate - the units are properly ventilated but get one hell of a lot of use (4 gamers in one house) and I swear modern electronics just don't last.

Yeah, I know that there's been a whole shit storm over the RROD's and I can see how people would get frustrated. For me it's always been about the games though. If I were a new user getting a system today it would be a much more difficult decision, but I wasn't about to jump ship with more Halo, Crackdown, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2 all coming down the pipe. So, I just went ahead and grabbed an Elite.

A lot of people have quoted that, but saying nothing about the survey is not an admission of guilt. No company ever releases their official failure rates, and I'm not surprised that Microsoft chose not to acknowledge the survey. Such is the way of the media and press releases. Obviously the RRoD failure rate is bad, it's probably around 25-30%, which is still very bad, but I've never had to pay for a repair, and the new Jasper chips that have been out for over a year now have much lower failure rates.

It's obvious that PS3, with it's extra year of seasoning, built much better hardware, I'll never argue that. But personally, it seems to have come at the expense of the games themselves. For a long time there was absolutely nothing on it that interested me. They're getting better now, but I just don't have the time to dedicate to two systems.

I hate submitting to hype, but I have to admit years of reports of XBOX 360 failures in hardware do have me wary, especially as I know when I do eventually go for it, it'll be either be a preowned model or the Arcade one.

Trouble with the PS3 is it's too expensive, when I already have a PC to feed with hardware, and just (in my opinion and personal preference) doesn't have the games I want.

I see them both as fairly similar really, tho I'm happy to say the PS3 is a better and more reliable machine, I still want the 360, having friends with them, and knowing there's a library of loanable games awaiting me :D
