The games of old were origional. Mostly because they had no choice but to be so, but that point remains. and if a sequel was released, there were at least more changes than just adding more guns. They also tended to be on the more difficult side(exception demon's souls and Final Fantasy III/VI. in FF3/6 i could beat bosses with only 1 character in the fight, not because i ran around lookin for fights, it was just that easy.) , and not have regenerating health. If you wanted to heal you had better hope you had a portable med kit, or there was one laying on the floor somewhere. There were also life systems, which meant you could botch up so badly so many times before the game says, you are too bad at this, to back a while a way and try to improve!

New games, though, are not an eyesore to look at (most of the time). They tend to have better stories and immerse you more (sometimes). They can be more complex and longer (again most of them). You can now add on more content to a game without buying a new disc/cartrage (Street fighter being most guilty for this). and you can play with 4,8,16,32,64,128+ people at once, instead of 2. Plus games start off with more content, so there are extra/hidden things to look for. Side games to keep you distracted.

Old = Pre Halo 1
New = Halo 1 and on.

So what is your choice? feel free to explain additional things i missed. I prefer the new ones. I like to play games with friends. :) random strangers not so much though.

There are tons of old games that are crap, and there are tons that are awesome. Same can be said for new games. To narrow that down further, it's all in what you're looking for.

New games!

They don't have archaic "Lives" systems. Usually.

And the Pokemon games get better every time, too! Well, the gameplay at least. The pokemon designs are horrid.

I picked new games, but that's probably because I'm quite young and I only started gaming around the time of Fable 1 and Halo 2.

Totally.

I mean, when we think of old games, you know what we things about?

The good games from that era.

Because the bad games were forgotten afterward as they didn't stand the test of time. When people have these kind of conversations in the future, nobody is going to remember games like Zombie-Ninja Pro Am.

Also, what people consider to be bad games nowadays, like Modern Warfare 2 or (in my opinion) Dante's Inferno, are infinitely better than the games considered bad in the old days. So in that regard, our bad games are better than the olden times bad games. And our good games include Shadow of the Colossus, therefore new games instantly win.

I don't care. I play both my Xbox 360 and Atari 2600 equally.
I've never quite cared about which generation, as long as it's fun.

I really don't care, as long as it's good. Killer7, Animal Crossing, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are great 'old' games, but Bioshock, Left 4 Dead, WoW and Twilight Princess are excellent new ones.

Depends what I want at the time. Some traditional turn-based gentlemanly combat with hammers and koopas, why, I do believe I'll go Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario/TTYD on that one. Superhero/villain sandboxy fun? Well, that definitely lets me play inFamous or Prototype. A raucous shooter with chums? Well, either one of the modern hyper-realistic dusty shooters, or maybe a trip down retro lane with some House of the Dead or Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Gauntlet and its iterations always remains fun, while each new Mario Kart/Smash Bros are fun to whip out. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 were the golden age of GH for my group of friends, while GH3/Rock Band/etc were the bronze age, fun, but not as good. Of course, this list could go on and on, so I'll stop it there, except for saying that the new age gives us God of War, and the old age gave us Zelda. Just depends on what I want to play at the moment of choice.

If you take off the nostalgia glasses, you will see that there were just as many good games as shitty games, just like now. The only real difference between now and then is that now the technology is better, which makes for prettier and more better sounding games. But as far as I see it, the overall game quality is still on the same level, and in maybe 10 years or so, the games today that seem almost mundane will be remembered as classics. I'll be proud to be a veteran gamer during that age.

Around the time the 360 came out I found a PS2 in a dumpster. I got it working and bought final fantasy VIII through X. I can honestly say that FF IX is one of the best games I've ever played. Right up there with Oblivion. So, no, I don't think it matters.

What are you, 13 (genuine question not insult)? If there is a dividing line to be made, it ought to be at the advent of 3d games, which in terms of consoles can be more or less marked by the entry of the Sony Playstation into the market. 'Pre Halo 1', really.
Halo is a dividing line. Games changed after Halo. Anyway 3D gaming is not the mark where games become "old." Games made around 10 years ago are old by industry standards.

Age doesn't matter, I'll play it as long as it's entertaining.
