I personally view it as the modern and true evolution of music. Classical, blues, rock, and now metal.

Other.

I view the genre as a whole (especially power, symphonic, and speed metal) to be worth listening to, but not worth getting pretentious about.

No music is really worth getting pretentious about

Power metal does not fall under heavy metal.

Symphonic metal does not fall under heavy metal.

Speed metal does not fall under heavy metal.

Heavy metal hasn't evolved so much as to be unrecognisable since the 1970's.

Metal, however, has, and power-, symphonic-, and speed metal all fall under metal.

Get your terminology straight.

I enjoy metal, and the majority of its subgenres, but whether or not it can be said to be intelligent, mediocre or a a guy going "raaah" really depends on the band. There are a hell of a lot of metal bands, and there are so many different subgenres that fall under metal, and there is so much overlap between them that it's difficult to simply say "metal is this" or "metal is that".

This.
Slipknot and Disturbed are two prime examples of bands difficult to classify.
Both obviously heavily routed in Nu Metal, but they expand into Thrash for Slipknot and Alternative for Disturbed

Oh, and I voted "other option". I don't as a rule like or dislike metal. Some of my favourite bands incorporate elements of metal, and I do enjoy one or two of the "progressive metal" bands (Tool, Isis, a bit of Opeth).

What I do like about metal is how open its audience is to experimentation and new ideas. Metal is truly the one area where the progressive rock concept has really taken root - many metal bands who are by now considered "mainstream" (inasmuch as a metal band can be mainstream) incorporate features like polyrhythms and atonality which used to be the exclusive domain of "weird" music.

I enjoy Heavy Metal bands, that don't take themselves too seriously, for example I went to see Alestorm perform yesterday (for those who don't know them they play Pirate Metal (Who incidentally were amazing)). But I was slightly abrasive about going as I wasn't sure how they would act, but they were a laugh, knew it was a bit odd, and just had banter with the crowd. But what I mean is that I would hate to see a band that took themselves ultra-seriously.

Add one option:

"An genre that you have to have a mentality to get into, but once you get that you will be dragged into the wonderful artwork that will make you cry in the songs emotion or give you an amazing adrenaline rush powered by the world's most skilled musicians and their epic guitar solos."

What an insightful and well-thought reply. <url=http://chamorrobible.org/images/photos/gpw-200703-03-UnitedStatesFishAndWildlifeService-Short-tailed-Weasel-Kanuti-NWR-Alaska.jpg>Have a weasel.

I'll keep that in mind. No one after Iron Maiden is considered heavy metal, because of a semantic dispute.

I totally agree with you. You have to take yourself seriously as a musician to get great, but dressing up is just stupid and a gimmick (I.E. Silly dress up 'Black Metal' tosses)

Semantic disputes are important. "Opeth is the best heavy metal band ever" is a nonsensical statement in the same way that "Opeth is the best marching band ever" is.

When I think Metal, I think of real Metal, anything from Sabbath to Maiden to Death to Scar Symmetry. I don't consider what people usually consider Metal to be Metal, like Trivium, alright band, there just not really metal.

Metal as I see it, is easily one of the best genres ever, for people who can get into it, it is a progression from classical and rock etc, but it is sooooo much more, the musicianship, the technicalities, the structures, the time signatures, the melodies. Nothing can compare.

Whenever someone says its just dudes screaming, it really pisses me off, because the are so closed minded and havent a clue what they are taking about. I understand its not for everyone, but for those that do, they know how awesome it is, and it shouldnt piss me off because people dont like it. Well it doesn't piss me off that people don't like it, what pisses me off is peope disrespecting it, and calling it a lower form of music, when it clearly isnt. If anything, its a higher form of music, but out of respect for other peoples tastes I try to keep that to myself.

I'm a big fan of metal as well. From a purely musical standpoint, a lot of the more technical bands' writing styles, seem to have more in common with classical composers.
Anyone who questions it, just needs to listen to Opeth. :p

I don't see why genre matters so much. I like anything that falls into the 'metal' genre, but I also like punk, rock, jazz, blues and certain rap/hip hop.

It's such a wide term for so many sungenres, it's difficult to generalise about it (as mentioned above somewhere).

I love basically all types of metal, from Iron Maiden, to Cannibal Corpse, and even to the new Deathcore stuff.
