Yes indeed...

Metal is the only music that makes men (and women) connect with thier inner primal ape and just go apeshit.

It's hard to talk about the topic of metal, since there are so many sub genres. Some people don't consider Nu Metal to be metal while, inversly, some don't consider Grindcore to be music. Now personally, I break up metal into only three catagories: Classic, modern, and grindcore. It's what I do to avoid confusion and to simplify aclaimed labels.

But classifying metal as a whole is impossible at this point in time. Depending on something as minor as location, a band could be Hardcore or Black metal. Everyone has their own favorate sub-genre, mine being melodic black metal[i.e. Equilibrium], which makes the most popular genre of music in the world [probably] a vauge and disputed genre.

I personally view it as the modern and true evolution of music. Classical, blues, rock, and now metal.
That's a little arrogant isn't it? Calling one genre the 'true evolution' of music is a bit like the stance all religions seem to take. It's too narrow, especially considering the presence of indy, pop, rap, funk, dance and so on. There's a wealth of other music out there and most of it's actually pretty good (except Crunk, whoever came up with Crunk needs to be locked in a a room and made to listen to Handel's Messiah 50 times in a row).

Anyway, I'm a bit out of love with metal at the moment.
As a genre it seems to have fallen into the same ruthlessly corporate, self parodying rut that Hip Hop's in. There are plenty of extremely good bands out theres, but equally there seems to be thousands of indentikit 'metal' bands in every sub genre, singing perfectly executed but predictable and vacuous songs about nothing.

I absolutely despise metal, so I am definitely biased in this.

The closest I am EVER going to get to metal is Nightwish.

However, I seem to enjoy some old metal. It's more delicate than modern metal.

I enjoy metal, that is to say some metal. I find that a lot of bands tend to just mindlessly bash around trying to make as much noise as possible. I enjoy folk metal mainly, bands like Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow and Equilibrium.

It's ever evolving though I voted for the Classics being superior; it was a hard choice for me. I see it as bands like Saxon, Judas Priest & Iron Maiden paved the way during the NWOBHM boom of the late 70s/early 80s, but 30 years later, they're still at it and still pushing boundaries.

I think I just have particularly high standards for Heavy Metal. I definitely hold the classic groups in the highest regard overall, but I do like to see new bands hit the scene that do something inventive or unique. There are a lot of great new bands but I feel like many of them have yet to prove that they deserve to have a legacy to be remembered several years from now; Dragonforce for one. They're good, but it's nothing guys like Helloween, Gamma Ray, or Yngwie Malmsteen haven't already done... better.

As you can tell by my references, I mostly stick to the more established sub-genres of Metal; Power, Anthem-like, Progressive, early-NWOBHM, and "True" Heavy Metal. None of that Nu-Metal or Death/Black/Doom/Hardcore/Grindcore bullshit. Anybody can growl or scream into a mic and that's probably why there's so many groups like that; if anything it's easy money for permanently damaging your vocal chords. I like vocalists that can actually SING and guitar players that can actually PLAY and perform SOLOS.

And this... says it all.

Add one option:

"An genre that you have to have a mentality to get into, but once you get that you will be dragged into the wonderful artwork that will make you cry in the songs emotion or give you an amazing adrenaline rush powered by the world's most skilled musicians and their epic guitar solos."
You couldn't have described it any better, friend.

Say what you will about them, but I think ManOwaR said it best.

"The Gods made Heavy Metal 'cause they saw that it was good!
They said to play it louder than Hell! We promised that we would!
When the losers say it's over with, you know that it's a lie!
The Gods made Heavy Metal... and it's never gonna die!"

And to dust off an even older one for my own personal bias... "DEATH TO FALSE METAL!"

I'm a big fan of metal as well. From a purely musical standpoint, a lot of the more technical bands' writing styles, seem to have more in common with classical composers.
Anyone who questions it, just needs to listen to Opeth. :p
Indeed. Ghost of Perdition still has me scraping my jaw off the floor every time I hear it.

I must also mention Strapping Young Lad, a criminally under appreciated band. Devin Townsend is a true musical prodigy and makes me happy to have ears.

I'm a major metal head, so I love listening to anything and everything I can get my hands on. I'm discovering new bands all the time, like this past week I discovered Annihilator, Exodus, Meshuggah and Cynic, and all of them kick ass.

But what is 'False Metal'? Metal is such a general term it could be anything! Growling and screaming are perfect if you know how to make sense with it. Children of Bodom is a perfect example. These were the first band that got me into Metal. They lack no skill whatsoever - but they never sing. How can there be anything wrong with that? Sure, screaming or growling is terrible, but if you can use it to amplify what you are doing with the instruments, then that is truly amazing.

Unfortunately, for every band like Opeth or Tool, there are at least ten shitemongers like Slayer or Dimmu Borgir.
That doesn't diminish the talent of the former bands, but does tarnish the genre somewhat.

Also, a lot of 'metalheads' seem to pride themselves on being obnoxious and ignorant of anything outside their chosen genre.

I voted 'Other'.

I'm interested in getting it, but $60 seems a bit much for only 40 songs... plus I have to endure the fucking Foo Fighters being included in the set list (ugh).

It's funny though how a lot of real musicians despise Rock Band and Guitar Hero instead of considering them as gateway activities for young people to potentially be inspired to pick up a real guitar (versus not doing anything music-oriented). I can't play real guitar, I could never wrap my head around it, but fake guitar is fun, hehe.

I was, however, a drummer at one time though its been many years since I've played. When I sat down to play the in-game drums... it was agonizingly funny how bad I was doing; not just from not playing my real drum kit after so long, but because I have a highway of colored circles dictating to me where to hit and when and being unable to position the separate "drums" where they'd be more comfortable for me to reach.

But yeah... maybe I'd pay $60 if it were Guitar Hero: Iron Maiden instead. At least they could actually pick enough of their good songs to fill the game to about 60-80 tracks instead of 40. :p
