Non mage? Ha! You're doomed!
Seriously though, there are a couple of people over on the Bioware forums who've done it - though they might have cheated a little with mods. That said, good luck! You will need it.
It's the only way I ever play Metal Gear Solid 4 (and without kills, alerts, health items and special items, of course). I've done it a couple of times in Metal Gear Solid 3 as well. Other games, not so much.
I've been doing that with RDR, Minecraft, and several of my other games.
The easiest hands down was MGS4. I did the entire game on Hard, then Extreme.
Hard was a pushover. When it came to extreme, I used the haven camo from the extras, so when you stand still, noone can see you. It made it easier, but the fight with Vamp, and the final punchout with Liquid sucked to no end. The craziest thing, I didn't kill ANYBODY for either run-throughs.
I have yet to complete any of these, but yeah, Roguelikes are the unltimate 'one life per game'. My ADOM scoreboard alone must contain nearly a thousand of failed playthrough attempts!
Last weekend I turned the difficulty down to 'Normal' and played Reach through from start to finish without dying (apart from where you have to), but that's on 'Normal' so probably doesn't count as an Iron Man run.
I beat pokemon blue in under 5 hours with just 4 pokemon (Squirtle, oddish, spearow and zapdos). No saves, and if all my pokemon fainted I would restart. Took me a few tries, but was worth it, just to show my friends that it could be done.
I do this in minecraft all the time, it adds to the game in my opinion.
I played once or twice on Diablo II, but I was a lot younger when I tried it, and I very much disliked losing a character like that.
Nuzlocke runs in Pokemon are the closest I've ever gotten. Mind you I have yet to complete any of them, but I have attempted. Note that I haven't completed them because I'm still progressing through the game, not because I got beaten part way through.
I'm thinking about starting another one and posting my progress here on the Escapist (shameless hypothetical plug!).
It's not that I'm opposed to the idea but usually I don't do this. I'm a wimp and like my redos. Actually, I'm pretty sure I've done this on Portal in one sitting. (unintentionally) LOL TOTALLY DID IT IN SHADOW OF DESTINY TOO. YEP. EIKE DIDN'T DIE ONE SINGLE TIME EVER.
I haven't played a game in "Iron Man mode" but I have done speedruns. Resident Evil Remake (Gamecube) in under 3 hours (2:48) to get the infinite rocketlauncher....without saving. A speedrun like this forces you not to die as you have no save file.
EDIT: Plus in "those ol' days" there were no checkpoints. Now plenty of games have checkpoints every 100 meters or so.
Closest I've come to that is EVE. Lose your ship and it's GONE, baby. Doesn't matter how long it took you to buy it. Likewise with implants. Get podded and it can feel like starting over.
Recently I made a new account on my PS3 called Only Live Once. In case the name doesn't give it away, on this account there is a self imposed Iron Man mode: You only get one try. If you fuck up, the game is over. One life per game, two if there's multi-player. I have to admit, while it has yet to end well, it sure ads a lot of tension to things, and it makes you really weigh your decisions.
So far no one's managed to survive all the way to the end of their tale. Jackie Estacado was blown to bits by a helicopter while pursuing corrupt cop Edward Shrote, John Marston shot down while fighting cattle rustlers, Preston Marlowe MIA somewhere in the jungle, a random Recon killed on his second mission (had 4 confirmed kills before he bit the dust,) a WW2 soldier fighting at Iwo Jima bombed by a plane, and a man run over by a truck while working as a freelance merc in Africa. And I just made this account yesterday. The only one I've started and haven't died in is Fallout: New Vegas, but I can't bring myself to play more of it, it's just too boring.
What about you? Have you tried any games in "Iron Man" mode? If not, do you intend to?
Also, what games seem like the best candidates for this play style?
Ive done variations, Including not allowing myself to buy anything On counterstrike source, only able to pick up weapons from other players. My teams grateful if I play well doing this, as I just chuck weapons on the floor that I buy with money I cant use on myself.
Though If I did do iron man, id be careful to choose what games. Some games have those wtf insta death moments ><
