OK, so picture this:
You've been carving/blasting/solving your way through numerous minions/baddies/puzzles and the end is in sight. Then, the final boss appears. You throw everything you have into it, to no effect or the boss all but destroys you in a single strike. Next, something happens to give you the last bit of oomph you need to destroy this final foe. The kind of thing that likely would have been obliterating previous enemies before they knew what hit them, sometimes having nothing to do with the upgrades you've been slaving away to achieve.

Who else is sick of this? It happens more often than I'd like. Here's some examples.

Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Prime
MP 2 Echoes (staple of the series much?)
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
FF7
Kingdom Hearts 2

I know there's more out there, please, add them to the list. If remember more, I'll add them too.

I've never actually seen anything like this in a game before, so I wouldn't know much about it.

I can't think of any other examples, but I don't like being given an awesome power right before the final boss. It makes everything seem a little bit cheaper than it would have.

The prototype rifle from Crysis Warhead was pretty badass and you only had it for 5 mins in the last boss fight.

Dirge of Cerberus did this.
Yes! I actually thought it made the game pretty epic, actually.
Plus it wasn't really a "last 5 minutes thing", you were superpowered for quite a bit.
I dunno, I guess I don't mind the last boost power boost in games?

I agree that I'm sick of them, but honestly, I cannot seem to name any. Deity Link from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, for example, was directly related to the Masks you collected but is only given to you at the very end. Or in God of War 3 (Which actually may be what you're talking about)?

For Kingdom Hearts 2, I'm assuming you mean Sora's Final Form which is a completely RANDOM chance to obtain? Or something else?

While it is overused, I like the sensation of making a giant comeback just when all hope is lost. Something to make the final boss go, "Puny ______, you should have known that you couldn't possibly defeat an enemy of my lev- OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!!!!"

I don't mind it, I like having something overpowered for the last boss fight, but if I only get to use it against lesser enemies you get bored quickly.

The only time I like it is when you can do a new game plus and use it freely when you restart like the blade of olympus in God of War 2.

What was the Eleventh Hour Superpower in Metroid Prime 2? I don't remember there being one...

Yes, I linked to TvTropes. Say goodbye to four hours.
The phazon beam you got when you absorbed the phazon shards and shot them back at dark samus I think is what he's referring to.
Well, that wasn't really a new power in and of itself, like the Phazon Beam from Prime 1. This was just using the vacuum powers of the Charge Beam in a more refined, time-costly way, a more roundabout way of killing the boss. Nevertheless, I see what he's getting at.

Resident evil 4. Just get a special rocket launcher and don't even need to aim it properly. The boss wasn't even that hard to beat without it from memory.
