I was playing NHL 09 last night online, and a few of the players I encountered spent more time messaging me over PSN trying to insult me rather than attempting to best me. Then I went over to CoD4, a few of the players that had mics consistantly bitched and complained about certain players. Of course spouting out all of the profanities listed about 3+ times a minute.

While the PSN isn't normally bad for this, I found it overly annoying and I eventually quit. An hour later, I contemplated what word I heard the most during that time.

What would you say is the most overused online insult?

Fag/Gay/other homophobic remarks. They really need to be put out of their misery.

Bet you those were XBL gamers who just so happen to have PS3s too. :p Yay for stereotypes. Really, sometimes the people you meet online just give gamers a bad image. It's rather sad.

You can take my fagwhore and my jewnazi from my cold dead metaphorical hands!

Though it is depressing when I hear a little twelve year old call me gay and not in a 'ha ha let's screw with each other' kind of way but in 'gays are icky gross terrible' kind of way.

It's mostly used to mean an unskilled player, originating from newbie. Used to be a noob was just a newbie that was some stubborn they would never learn anything, but then anyone doing something stupid was called a noob and all new people are clearly evil.

I always heard I raped you most of the time on any shooter I played...or just random Russkies screaming at people in World in Conflict. Oh yeah and back in the day when I played Medal of Honor: Allied Assault with the realism mod that weeded out the CS kiddies yelling we are taking you to the gas chambers was really popular on the Axis team.

Fixed, since I don't think they are afraid of homosexuals.

But I agree with the point made. 'Gay' and 'Fag' are thrown around way too much. Not only is it insulting to the homosexual community, but it also makes them sound about as educated as a pear. Thank goodness you can mute people on Xbox Live.

EDIT: The term 'rape' too. I used it while telling my brother of a gaming story, and he cut me off and asked 'Have you ever seen a raped woman?' He's a paramedic, and I amd certainyl not, so I said 'no.' He replied 'You wouldn't use that word so easily if you did.'

I haven't used it since.

'Noob' really means 'Someone that is new to the game being played' or 'new to gaming in general'. I'm not exactly sure why it's considered one of the biggest insults around the gaming scene.

I personally use nonsensical insults, with the intent of getting as many people mad as possible. Some favourites include:

"Your mum smells like a glass of milk."

"Your dad takes camping trips to Norwich"

"Yo momma so dumb she probably picked charmander even though statistically bulbasaur has no discernable weaknesses until the 7th gym, which would give you plenty of time to find another adequate firetype in the form of Arcanine or Ninetails."

Usually followed by "biatch."

Edit: Also, 'Noob' is a derogatory remark, used for no real purpose. It evolved from 'Newbie', which meant (and is still used to describe) a person new to a game or activity.

I laughed.

And yeah, apparently a lot of things online are gay nowadays, weapons, tactics, etc. I see where people are coming from though, it's like these days you can't walk down the street without seeing 2 sniper rifles having ass sex.

While I appreciate the attempt at fixing my wording, I still think homophobic stands in correct usage. It doesn't necessarily indicate a fear. The contempt [http://www.answers.com/homophobic].

I really dont like all of the gay/homophobic stuff but they really dont get 2 me. I mean thats stuff you can here at football practice and just everyday life. The noob stuff bothers me mainly because people who say that to me have no reason. If you have 100 kills and i have 2 sure, call me a noob; ill tuck my tail between my legs and say you had a better game. Now when you beat me by one or two kills in a game and yell how you are master of all - that gets me really mad and zooming over to the mute button.

Just because you hear it in real life doesn't necessarily mean its appropriate or that it should be validated as a common phrase.

The cliche "If someone jumps off a bridge..." comes to mind.

I have heard a wide variety of attacks from racism to homophobia to anti-semitism. It's hard to say....But all insults are caused by poor sportsmanship, I can agree with that..
Not true. I constantly insult my friends and a lot of people I know through friends because that's just how we are. We enjoy insulting each other and devolving into sarcasm and attempts to one up each other. And team killing. It's not that insulting perse is a bad thing, just most people that do it are trying to appear stronger and more manly in... well, in a video game.
