Its the ones where you repeatedly press the same button(s) over and over as fast as you can that annoy me.
Prince of Persia. Ugh. It annoyed me that much I traded in the game. (for more than I paid for it, in the same shop I bought it from)
Nice

god of war = good

erm...Resi 4 (i think) = bad

watching a video just for a 1 sec timer on a button to press comes up and u have to watch it all again is plain ghey...

they should make movies with QTE, and it under 50% of the people in the cinema hits the button then they have to watch that part again...its the same thing...

I like the ones that make sense. You know, the kind where you're watching a cutscene, and suddenly, a huge boulder comes rolling down the hill at you, and you've got about half a second to hit the jump/dodge button to avoid being crushed.

The ones I can't stand are the kind that take control completely out of your hands, like in The Force Unleashed's major lightsaber duels. You're prompted to press a button - ONE button - and Starkiller launches into a series of admittedly spectacular moves that might or might not actually be possible during gameplay, essentially taking the best part of lightsaber duels, striking the killing blow, right out of your hands. That kind of QTE, to me, seems to be less interactive and more "press this button to play the next scene of the movie".

And yeah, I hate the kind that prompt you to press a button repeatedly. It's like someone got Mario Party in my Arkham Asylum, I swear.

Bet we're gonna get loads of Yahtzee fans going "Ogm! Th3y r teh dem0n! Yartsea sez s0, it r mu5t b3 trO0!".

Personally, I think they're alright if done well, and placed at good points in th game.

I like quick-time events when you're killing an enemy; like in Viking: Battle for Asgard, your character starts stabbing the enemy in the face and you're pressing the button it tells you on screen rapidly.
They're good in moderation, I just hate when you have to do that every 10 minutes.

I don't mind them as long as there is enough time to react to them.

Isn't rapidly pressing buttons technically all a game is?

Quick time event can be a nice way of getting a player through an even that would otherwise be overly frustrating. But anything that gets over used is never good. I find them similar to taking the scenic route, it might be slower, but it has a nice view.

QTE's can be good however they can also be very, very bad. This same theme of features that can help or hurt a game have always existed. QTE's simply get a lot more shit talked about them.I blame Yahtzee for the trend of "QTE's are evil" they simply go well with some games and terrible with others.

Some are pretty well done. Resident Evil 4's quicktimes made cinema scenes all the more involved and exciting. Force Unleashed quicktimes added to the fights and the cinema (which I believe is the point of QT's). Other games, though, they are just annoying and awkwardly added. In short: it depends.

Exactly. How are QTE's different than any other part of any videogame? There are symbols on the screen that tell you what to press-and they usually don't correspond to what you've been using that button for previously.

But if you don't press the buttons when you're supposed to, you die-just like in most QTEs. The ones in Uncharted 2 where you're boosting someone up to reach a ladder would be the recent exceptions, but you still can't progress until you've done them.

What bothers me about QTEs is this: you never know it's coming. If there are situations where I need to press X not to die, I'd like to be made aware of this fact going in. Cutscenes are chances to relax; posture, hands, brain all get a short break. EXCEPT FOR THE QTE AND OHMIGOD-aaaand I'm dead.
Fuck.

I'm all for integrating gameplay more (see the legions of complaints about FF being a movie instead of a game) but perhaps QTEs need to be more forgiving of mistakes, or if nothing else, a tiny alert needs to be given to the player so they know they need to be involved.

For all the bad ways of executing QTEs they can be used incredibly well.
In his review of Uncharted, Yahtzee mentioned that QTEs might be alright when included as a core part of gameplay. As a consequence of that statement I am STILL waiting for a review of Ninja Blade, a game which has fulfilled that demand to the letter.

QTEs in my opinion are overrated. Some games really pull it off, like God of War for instance. Other games like Resident Evil 4 seem to just do it to annoy you. I voted in Moderation only because some developers pull it off well.

Yeah, I liken most QTE's to someone hitting 'Pause' on my game and I have to hit 'Start' again to continue watching the movie....

God of War's QTE kills themselves are awesome, but it's like they dumbed down the game play to accomodate all of the cool animations they wanted to put in. I'm sure they could have come up with a more clever and challenging system. I suppose that's why I hate the games so much... too easy, very repetitive....

I don't hate them like most people seem to do(read yahtzee).
A good 'ol QTE once in a while can be nice. Still, nothing is good if you overdo it.

Pressing a single button rapidly, in other words QTEs, should not be part of ANY game.
it doesn't require much brain activity to understand what I meant.
