I've got Logitech G9. Two buttons for the thumb (also two buttons to choose the dpi level). I use the other one sometimes. I had it as jump a while back, but I jump with wheeldown now, so I don't have much of use for it, in FPS's at least.

And ESDF? THIS IS MADNESS!
EDSF makes more sense than WSAD, think about it like this.

With WSAD you run the risk of accidentally losing your place on the keyboard if you get momentarily distracted, if you use EDSF, you can always find the F key by the little bump on it.

It makes sense, IMO.

Also you're less likely to hit the start key, or rely on Alt and Tab to do two separate things and accidentally switch window during a gun fight.

Happened so much while on ventrilo and trying to change gun in Halo when I used to play.
I've gotten used to moving my hand and finding the Shift and Ctrl keys so finding the WASD buttons is easy for me, also my keyboard can selectively light up WASD the rest of the buttons are on muscle memory. But i mainly play FPS so I dont need more buttons, although i have a 7 button mouse for convience (6&7 work off macro's to other buttons) I like having "MEDIC" and taunts assigned to the mouse.

The mouse is for moving, keyboard is for buttons. More than one or two buttons to push in the middle of action is a distraction.

OK, so here's an idea for a setup (that I hope to also translate to gamepad... somehow)

M1 = main attack, shoot, etc
M2 = melee (Caps-> toggle M2= use weapon secondary function, e.g. M203 grenade launcher)

M3 = use secondary weapon *
Wheel up = Zoom in (decrease Field of view)
Wheel down = Zoom out (increase Field of view)

M4 + F = Use/interact
M5 = quick use alt weapon function (e.g. under-barrel grenade launcher or stab with bayonet)

Tab = objectives/quick map
Shift = toggle weapon sights
(\= hold for sights)
Caps = toggle alt-weapon function
Ctrl = crouch (hold + mouse wheel up/down to raise/lower stance from standing to prone)

WASD = movement
123 = direct weapon select
Q + E = fast weapon select (Q = toggle between weapon 1 & 2... A = toggle between weapon 2 & 3)
F = use
R = reload
C = tap to start sprint
Z+X = lean (??? not sure about this one)
v = multiplayer: team talk / single-player: command CPU allies
G = toggle 2ndary weapon
Hold G = cycle 2ndary weapon with scroll wheel
4-to-0 = quick select 2ndary weapon

Esc = pause menu (save games, quit, graphics, control layout)
F1 = game menu (adjust camouflage, armour, weapon loadout)
F2 to F12 = game quick function like start/stop demo record, quick-save/load, etc

*secondary weapon would be a small item you'd fit in a large pocket or hang off your belt:
-grenade
-molotov cocktail
-throwing axe
-grappling hook
-combat knife
-small pistol

and you'd draw and use it immediately, so caught mid reload you may press M3 and pull out a pistol and start shooting.

but how would you feel about keys alternating what those 2 buttons actually do. For example, Caps Lock Key toggles M2's function from "Melee" to "fire grenade"

I use M1, M2, M3, Mousewheel and M4 on the side. I use it for certain specific actions in multiplayer games and thats about all I use it for. It makes no difference to me really. :p

8 buttons.
I've had my MX518 for years now.
Still going strong, as if new.
Best mouse I've ever had.

M1, M2 + scroll wheel is good enough for me. Fire, Second function, change weapon. With scroll wheel press and roll being my on-the-fly sensitivity.

I have the Logitech G500, can't complain, fits my hand better than most mice.

Yeah, shame it has that weird high back and prediction. Never figured out why it was so popular tbh.

I have a 5-button mouse. Always map commonly used functions to the two side-buttons, such as a melee-attack to the thumb button and zoom to the ring finger button.

I tend to not use M3 for anything action-oriented, though. Just find it too distracting to try to press down the mouse wheel at those times.

EDIT: Oh, I think the mouse wheel also has "tilt left" and "tilt right" functions, but I haven't used those at all.

I don't use the extra buttons anymore, mostly due to the fact that I kept loading up one game while running the button configuration for a different one and getting my face ripped off while trying to figure out what was wrong.

I still prefer the gaming mice though, i like the weight and the way you can change the sinsitivity at the push of a button. I even tried to let them use my own mouse in a computing examm because their mice were too puny (they didn't let me).

Because it's comfortable.

As far as mouse buttons go, the only time I've ever used my mx510's thumb buttons are as voice toggles (kinda nice to universally have mouse 4 for vent/teamspeak and mouse 5 for in game).

I have a wireless mouse, ergonomically sculpted, responsive movement, with two extra buttons which I presume (but have never checked) can be set as M3 & 4. But I don't use it cause the scroll wheel - a vital part of most of my games - is shit.

So I use a crappy little £5 job, with the bare essentials: two buttons and a scroll wheel/M3. It's great.

I just use a two button mouse with a scroll wheel. In total, I can naturally (without shifting my hand) reach ~25 keys on the keyboard as well which is sufficient for the vast majority of games.

I need a good mouse BADLY! I'm using the mouse that came with the PC, the only thing I haven't changed on it. And for games such as Black Ops, I might as well be playing with a console controller, only worse, because the lazer spazzes out and I end up spinning in place till even the character on screen feels like puking. I've heard that optical is the way to go for gaming, is this so? Experiences? Advice?

Actually have a 7 button mouse, but I only used it for a month, apparently I tend to squeeze the mouse when in a tight spot so I would usually do something unwanted just when every nanosecond was crucial, also alot of games don't comprehend more then 3 buttons so there was a always an issue to set up macros so the mouse would simulate keyboard keys.

So I'm back to a 3 button mouse, it's simple dependable and solid.

Definitely, M1, M2 and M3 with scroll wheel. Anymore than that is just horrible, I like my mouse for precise quick aiming not being bogged down with things that would be easier on keyboard.

Just what's with all these people saying that more than 2 or 3 buttons 'get in the way'?
It's really, really not that hard to learn where the buttons of your mouse are.
It's like saying that more than an A and B button on a gamepad is too confusing.
Just doesn't make sense to me.
