Eh, why should someone stay and keep doing something they don't think is fun? That's the point of games, after all. Entertainment. And if a player isn't entertained by the game, he should go do something else.

I saw a bunch of you saying "People that leave when they lose are sore losers", followed by "it makes me mad when they leave because that makes me lose"... Err, isn't that kind of self-contradictory? So what if you lose. If you get annoyed by your loss, then you're just the same type of person as the one leaving. The point of the game isn't winning at all costs, after all, but entertainment. Both teams can't win. And if you can't have fun while playing against better equipped/more skilled players, then I just feel sorry for you.
The fact that they are leaving when their team begins to lose demonstrates immaturity and lack of sportsmanship. As you said yourself, both teams cannot win. accepting that sometimes you will lose, and taking responsibility will probably get more respect than quitting.

Many people here are saying they get angry because people quit leaving them with the responsibility, and having to make up for the quitters short-comings. It isn't any fun loosing because other people cannot be bothered to keep going.

I leave part way through a game if I'm not having fun. If I play a match and the other team is awful and I do really well, I'll leave for a better challenge. The same goes for the opposite, if I play a match and have no fun because I'm being beat then I'll find a better game. I gave up on the noble 'Fight a match until the end' thing awhile back, it wasn't fun.

Some people are of the enlightened group that realize that games don't matter!
I quit playing WoW one day and didn't even bother to tell my guild mates that i wouldn't be coming to the three raids i had signed up for, and i didn't care about the fact that they'd think i was a cop-out because, simply, if they still cared about games that much then it was their funeral, not mine~

It's not a question of virtue and morals when you're controlling a conglomeration of pixels and scripts - if you think it is then don't hold it against them because they obviously hold different values.

edit: For the record, this is just my opinion, and i'm not trying to attack you
I can see what you mean, but in something like an MMO you cannot say that it is purely about dealing with pixels. The idea of an MMO is that it is about dealing with people. And while some people do take games far too seriously, it is important to realize that people will be irritated if you fail to complete your side of the bargain that is made at the start of the game.

I myself do not play MMO's any more, as I am not able to contribute the amount of time demanded by them. Games may not matter, but the amount of time invested in them, that can be wasted because of someone else's actions, does.

While I really hate it when people do that, sometimes you just have to go do something more important, even if the match is at stake.

Usually, I just say "sorry, but something came up" before leaving.

But it's pretty easy to figure out when it's "something more important" and just bailing out when you're about to lose. I've even had a couple of duels, where the game is just about to end and I'm leading, the opponent just decides to quit.

At times it feels like I'm the only one who can have fun with a game even when I'm losing.

Definatly mate, i know what you mean. I really was my guild's top raider for years on end, one day i just realized it wasn't quite worth it. The principle of the game implies that i should at least be -willing- to make an unspoken agreement, but sometimes, yeah, principles aren't everything. Especially digital ones.
Agreed.

I love how in Halo 3 when you choose to quit it says:

"There will be an experience penalty. Do you still wish to quit?

Yes-Punish my cowardice!

No-I'll finish with honor."

I'm a "Till The Bitter End" kind of gamer. Frankly I consider one of the most important parts of a game is the ability to enjoy loosing. Nothing beats the feeling of having a defiant last stand.
Exactly.
I'm shit at games and proud, does that mean I'm not allowed to enjoy them?

I don't care to be honest.

I play multiplayer games for fun??not to whore stats or K/D ratios??so the rare occurrence of someone leaving because I'm that damn good makes me feel great. If I'm feeling great it means I'm enjoying myself. If I'm enjoying myself it means I'm having fun. Etc.
I'm with him. I don't really care if i am getting my ass kicked or doing the ass kicking as long as i am having a good time how good the game is going to other people is irrelevant.

other. It depends why. If you're leaving because you're losing than I hate you. If you're about to get laid or something I'm not going to expect you to stay.
I agree, if they give a good reason, I can't stand it when people quit just because they are losing.

I don't leave, but I can understand why people do. If you haven't gotten a single kill in half an hour, it's not fun anymore. And what's the point of playing if it's not fun?

FIFA 09 Be A Pro online is causing me anguish at the moment because of the manifest incompetence and/or selfishness of so many other players that do NOT leave quickly enough for my liking.

Fuck that, die with honor.

I hate people who bail when they're losing.

Chose other, since there wasn't a "Not if I can help it" option.
My internet will work fine most of the time, but occasionally it'll start coughing up weird stuff and suddenly die.

This sucks when you're just about to finish bringing the flag (or in this case "the enemy sample") back to your capture point. If I may put what happened yesterday to me in Farcry into script format for a second...

Score:Red Team 1/Blue Team 2 (3 points to win, Blue member with our smaple is standing next to their capture point, waiting for me to die so it can be captured)

Team Member 1: *see's me driving back to base, chased by enemy team* "Aw yeah! Here comes our big come back! Come on Iron!"
Iron Ninja: *Enters base, starts climbing up the insanely high ladder to get to where the capture point is*
Team Member 2: "Aw yeah he's almost up the ladder!"
Iron Ninja: *Gets to top of ladder, sprints to capture point, stops in front of it* "What the hell?"
Team Member 1: "what's going on? Move onto the capture point."
Iron Ninja: "I can't move"
Team Member 2: "Well throw the sample to me"
Iron Ninja: "I can't do that either"
Team Member: "Aw man that su-"
--You have been disconected--
--The Ir0n Ninja disconected from xbox live---
Iron Ninja: "What? Why did I do that? stupid internet!" *gives internet a kick*

I went back on straight afterwards, apparently the sample just dissapeared with me. Which sucked, because it was a user made map that had an obscenely long path to follow between the two bases.

But outside when that happens, I never quit just because I'm losing. Maybe I might if who I was facing where being real dicks about it.

On that same day, I played a game of 5 vs 3 (I was on the 3 side of things) where the 5 in question stood at the top of a mountain and shot at us with high power sniper rifles time and time again as we respawned
I didn't quit.
I don't think I ever killed anyone, but I didn't quit.
