We had them, they were mandatory, and I hated them. They were always at the end of the day and you could only leave if you had the permission of your parents. If you drove away in your own damn car the vice-principal was waiting at the exit of the school with a stack of detention slips and to turn you around. I hated them and everything they stood for. I would only yell during them because my disdain for the underclassmen would not allow me to let them out yell our class. Otherwise I would only yell when it made no sense to. Our band was great though, so there was that at least.

The idea of doing that in a British school is pretty funny, just because of how little anyone would care.

Got to love good old British apathy!

Yeah, we had a lot of mandatory pep rallies.

Were they good or bad? Who the f*** cares!? We got out of class for these. What else could be better?

Also, in my senior year, I was a photographer for our school paper and I was able to spend even more time out of class and take pictures of the cheerleaders and female sport members before the pep rally.

I don't know about pep rallies but we did have a number of basketball games during school hours that we got/had to go to.
Didn't bother me, I got to get out of class, and if I didn't want to watch the game I'd just leave.

We had mandatory pep rallies, thankfully I made a deal with my ROTC instructor that instead of going I'd mop the floors. Seemed a much better use of my time than cheering for a school I hated.

Non-Mandatory pep rallies happen at my school seemingly whenever the hell the staff wants to hold 'em. However, this is a Catch-22: you have to slip by school staff to escape the grounds in order to avoid having to go, since while officially it is non-mandatory, they'll try to force you to go anyways. Luckily, there is a public library across the street to duck into, but you have to get there first.

I've always managed to avoid 'em, but my friends who for whatever reason ended up in it say it's boring, dull, and trite. So I voted neutral for my school's.

As someone who comes from an island, what's a Pep rally?

My two cents is that anything mandatory makes those in it resent it.

But;

making it voluntary risks it falling apart from lack of interest.
It's mostly in Canada and the US.

This should give you an idea on them:

I hated them. We're required by law to show up to school, so we're also forced to watch loud irritating bullshit, too. People put down lazy teachers who show movies in class, but it is a million times more enriching than sitting on uncomfortable bleachers while an algebra teacher prattles on about who won teacher of the year or provides color commentary on some dumb variation of a potato sack race. I think you could get out of it if you had early release as a senior (you could drive home at 2 to cut down on the traffic at the end of the day), but everyone else had to sit through various teams talking about how they're going to win. Mind numbing.

Well, I never had any. In fact, I haven't even heard of them before this.
But, for whatever my word is worth, they sound awful.

Hahaha! That's like forcing someone to like something they hate!

Yeah, ok, in light of this it's utterly pointless to make pep rallies explicitly mandatory.

It's obviously easier just to make students go in a passive aggressive way. :D

Don't have pep rallies in the UK. In my school the most fanfare the school football team got was a mention after class that the team had a game and anyone who could be bothered to stand for 2 hours in a muddy field in the middle of November. And besides I thought in the US they had cheerleaders and mascots to drum up support for the team so why do they need to get the whole school involved? Also can the audience of a pep rally chime in with their own chants? Because if so, some ironic chanting should liven it up a bit. All in all pep rallies sound horrible and that is from someone who likes sports.

We had one for football every year, and even though I was on the Football team, I thought it was stupid as hell.

And as usual, xkcd sums it up:

They are super fucking cramped, we have over 1500 kids in our school, and I'm claustrophobic. They are fucking loud, they are pointless, and one time I skipped out on one and hid in the bathroom.
Watch out, I'm a badass over here.

My school has mandatory ones. [small]Not that that ever stops me from skipping them and leaving early.[/small]
A lot of the students get really, really excited about them though. Our cheerleaders try and our band is okay, so I guess it's not as bad as it could be.

That's not how skipping out on school works, buddy. It's supposed to be fun and liberating. And not smell like a high school bathroom. *shudder*

I am glad that due to my being in the Audio/Video class, I got to spend the whole thing frantically filming the event rather than sitting around in the crowded stands. The whole thing did leave me curious on you guys' opinions of the damn things though.
that sounds pretty cool, being able to actually do somthing

[quote/]So, does your high school (current or former) have mandatory pep rallies? Or pep rallies at all? If so, what is your outlook on them?[/quote]

im In Australia so we dont really have "pep rallys" however I went to a very fancy private school and certain year groups had to go to spectate the sports...

it was loud...very loud..in some big old stadium, and boring..too loud for my Ipod..which doesnt matter because I took it out to check the time and the teacher gave me a deathstare

in another carnival I think it was the same thing but I was among randomly selected people to do jobs..I didnt have much to do other than run a few messages to the girls operating the score board but it felt cool to be doing somthing rather than watching
