Honestly, I don't think he's an idiot or a liar. It seems to me that he's just a man who loves video games. Mostly, he loves HIS video games a wee bit too much. So, at times he tends to hyper-idealise certain aspects of the game like any gamer would to his friends talking about their favorite game (Best game evar?). While this can make him obnoxious (Really, watch any dev diary, especially the Fable 2 ones where he waxes on about love...), but, all and all, I'd rather play a game made by someone who loves games (i.e. Populous) than someone who hates them (i.e. Most movie games).

And your missing a huge point as well! When you run a buisness sometimes you have to place your morals aside to make money. I don't know what happy little sunhsine land you've been growing up in, but in the real world the truth dosen't come out to often no matter where you are.

So it's ok to lie so long as you make money. Ok then.

Instead of looking through your eyes let's look thorugh Peter's. He just told people that Fable will practically be a virtual image of the real world.

And if that were all he said there wouldn't be a problem. The problem is he stated specific things that turned out to be untrue and he kept the truth from the public.

A) Tell the truth and proably lose half of it.
or
B) Keep the game hyped and milk it for all it's worth.

Which would you do? Would you really give up 30 million dollars just to keep to your morals?

So this amounts to you saying that it's ok to lie so long as it gets you what you want. Well fine, but that doesn't address the issue of whether or not he lied.

Anyway you're confusing false statements of fact with subjective statements of hype. "It will be epic" "awesome" "revolutionary" are all subjective claims, they in no way compare to the statement "There will be 11 lands and 7 tribes" which can be proven false. When dealing with the latter statement, the question becomes one of intent, because the latter statement is not subjective, it is either true or false.

I don't particularly think it's either, He's a man whose outright devoted and enthusiastic towards the things that he and his team create.

sure he over-steps the mark with his promises, which I think he's honestly toned down, but I wouldn't be too interested in buy a game that the CEO of the devlopers had little to no faith in.

His games aren't outright terrible they're just not exactly what he says they are, because he has a genuine vision of where he wants to take things with gaming and I highly doubt that even he feels that any one of his latest titles is anything more than a step towards that goal.

Like I said he just gets a little too enthusiastic about it, which is perfectly understandable. If I were to invest time, money and attention into a project I completely believed was worth the effort, I wouldn't turn around and say "You'll have fun with it, but it won't exactly change your life, buy Gears of War instead."

And that's my take.

I think you've got the truth here. at least he's passionate, which is kind of rare in the games industry.

Actually you were making a valid point and you simply used a horrible and offensive example to make your point. The fact that your example was bad, and offensive, in no way effects the validity of the point you were trying to make.

He's also stated things about his products that are demonstrably untrue, then he did not share the truth with us until millions of copies were sold.

I think he really believes in what he says.

Later on he gets dragged down to reality when the reactions of the general public get to him. For a while he realized that he really did have a habit of talking out of his ass and he tried to turn it down a couple notches. Then Project Natal came around and he backslided into his old habits.

Maybe. Maybe when he said that Black and White 2 would have 11 land and 7 tribes he really meant it and maybe it just slipped his mind until people started yelling at him on the forums.
