What did he know, and when did he know it?
Maybe when he said that Black and White 2 would have 11 land and 7 tribes he really meant it and maybe it just slipped his mind until people started yelling at him on the forums.
Except when Peter Molyneux makes a statement that later turns out to be untrue, and that statement is presented as a matter of fact, and Peter Molyneux chooses not to reveal the truth, that is dishonest.

Peter is not an idiot, that's for sure.
But I do thing perhaps, he's not a liar, too.
He simply sets his standards so high that he can't hope to reach them, yet continues to advertise these standards as the way the game's going to be.

Everyone lies to promote their product. It is called marketing.

If he says it is the best game in the world he has a right to say that. If he says his game can cure cancer I am sure he can be sued for it.

As long as he operates within legal grounds he can say what he wants.

He's a genius why do I say that? He exaggerates his games so much that you end up buying them. But he includes everything he said they would just on a smaller scale but on a big enough scale that you're entertained. So just wear tinfoil hats and you'll be okay

See that's exactly what I mean by Free Pass. If at any point during development Peter Molyneux realized that many of the things he said would be in a title were in fact not going to be in the title, he should have done the ethically responsible thing and came clean with us instead of selling us a game on false promises.

Id say both. Hes a liar for promoting his games for more than they are. And he is an idiot wondering why we hate him for it.

I don't particularly think it's either, He's a man whose outright devoted and enthusiastic towards the things that he and his team create.

sure he over-steps the mark with his promises, which I think he's honestly toned down, but I wouldn't be too interested in buy a game that the CEO of the devlopers had little to no faith in.

His games aren't outright terrible they're just not exactly what he says they are, because he has a genuine vision of where he wants to take things with gaming and I highly doubt that even he feels that any one of his latest titles is anything more than a step towards that goal.

Like I said he just gets a little too enthusiastic about it, which is perfectly understandable. If I were to invest time, money and attention into a project I completely believed was worth the effort, I wouldn't turn around and say "You'll have fun with it, but it won't exactly change your life, buy Gears of War instead."

And that's my take.

I agree with gof22 and Booze here (in Peter's defence, it would be more idiotic if he didn't try to overhype his games due to how much competition there is in the games industry).

I think you're just being naive. You want to trust that they're honest mistakes but the fact is some of the thing is Peter Molyneux not only over-shoots, he chooses to keep the truth to himself and always creates an air of mystery during interviews instead of coming out with the God's honest truth!

Ever think that perhaps by the time he's realised that all his techies and whatnot can't do what he wants, he's said too much?
I think perhaps that he's too enthusiastic for his own good.

He doesn't lie outright, he just makes things seem bigger than they are and tells us things that are being made even through they might be cut.

He doesn't lie, he justs says things in such a way that they seem big.

http://community.lionhead.com/forums/thread/3181693.aspx

Here's a list, its quite strict on truth/lie, if what he said was there has a diffrent name its marked as a lie and sometimes its just plain wrong but it seems like the kind of thing you are after.
Like I said he doesn't outright lie and I don't think he's stupid or evil, just very happy to talk about his game and the things that are planed to be in it.

Also your poll is useless, why not just have one option and make it clear its pointless?

What if he said that Fable would have Free Roaming akin to Morrowind and it turned out to be a game on rails, and he knew this before the game was launched but chose not to tell us the truth?

Then at that point he has a choice, he can tell the truth or allow everyone to continue to believe the lie.

And I think he gets a free pass with this excuse.

I think maybe for me the question isn't so much "Did he outright lie?" as it is "Was he really honest with what he knew?" The answer to the latter question is a repeated no.

Allow me to point out that on the Lionhead Forums, they don't exactly allow certain kinds of dissent. When I got Black and White 2 there was false information right there on the back of the box it came in, saying that the game had more lands and tribes than it had, features such as tech research which was not in the game, ect.

When I pointed this out on the Lionhead Forum for Black and White 2 I was immediately banned. I created a new account, even posted a photo proving it, again I was banned. When I finally got an answer to why, they said that I was making the accusation of false advertising. Well guess what I had proof of the false advertising right there on the back of the box. I got the run around and eventually a "Blame EA" response since they were the distributer, never an apology and never an acknowledgement.

My overall point is that I doubt they're going to let you really call PM on half of what he says, outright lie or no. You're on their turf there, and they're going to run damage control, anything too damning may get you banned with no explanation.

I don't consider it Naive at all, I genuinely believe that any developer, Lionhead or otherwise is completely capable of creating a shroud of intrigue about their games with the things they promise, I mean anyone who's ever bothered to watch development videos, or look at screenshots, are effectively helping themselves to lie, to themselves.

Case in point, Prototype, I remember in one development video one of the development team members, actually said something along the lines of "We're actually opting for a later release date so we can make this game perect, I can safely say that this game will be one of the best ever made and will genuinely be different from evertyhing else." Yet all I've heard about the game since release is how poor it is. (which is disapointing because the concept was actually pretty cool.) and let's face it, hack and slash, anti-hero games have been done to death, so much so that an almost indentical game was released around the same time... (and that too, was pants.)

Peter Molyneux is no more guilty of lying then any other games developers out there, besides maybe Rocksteady who came through and actually made an enjoyable Batman game...

The thing is, he's not lying, he's doing what games developers have to do(and have been doing for years), they have to sell games.

But beyond that, I honestly think he is genuine in his cause to bring a more personal experience into games, to try and invoke genuine emotion through the medium, Lionhead just haven't quite hit the mark on that yet, but who said it wouldn't take time and a few tries?

What a modderator does is not going to be the same as what Peter Molyneux would do. As I said he doesn't outright lie, when he says these things they are 100% correct, but as time goes on things change.

You accused them of doing something illegal, which they thought they had not done, then you started ban jumping for something that a publisher has the final say on, did you really expect them to let such things slide?

At any rate, that link wasn't my argument, it was there because you asked for a list. My argument is; at the time he says these things they are either true, or he says them in such a way that they seem larger than they are, both of which are normal for anybody to do. Who the hell would use negitive words to discribe their work?

Archemetis what I mean is I think you're naive about Peter Molyneux's intentions. You seem to think he just has big ideas and he's just this innocent dreamer, but he has every option to come clean with us and he chooses not to.

Oh so Fable had free roaming like in Morrowing, or was that only 20% correct?

You accused them of doing something illegal, which they thought they had not done, then you started ban jumping for something that a publisher has the final say on, did you really expect them to let such things slide?
I simply stated what was on the back of the box and pointed out that it wasn't in the game. I didn't even use the words false advertising. They banned me and wouldn't even discuss it with me, they were clearly in the wrong. I presented proof, other people followed up with similar proof, the thread was deleted and as far as I know everyone who presented photographic evidence to back me up was banned with me, only this time my IP was banned.

Lionhead should have informed us upfront what the issue was, instead they banned us and hoped we'd just give up and disappear. If I hadn't pressed the issue I would have never found out what was going on, that is irresponsibility on Lionhead's part not on mine.

At any rate, that link wasn't my argument, it was there because you asked for a list. So when Peter Molyneux realized that Fable would not have free roaming akin to Morrowind and chose to keep that little tid bit to himself, who's fault was that?

Anyway I'm just tired of everyone giving him a free pass, that's all. I don't hate the man, I hate how everyone treats him like an idiot savant who just has stars in his eyes. Some people just seem to want to pat him on the head and give him a cookie then tuck him in at night. At least it seems that way with some of the excuses they give for him.

Wow, 2 "I hate Peter" threads in under half an hour. Tell me, how many of his games have you actually played and how much of it is parroting hate.

He's a programmer trying to act as PR. Not a very good combination. Though I would hardly call him an idiot.
