No, of course it isn't.

Isn't everyone on their high horse because they think picketing funerals is disrespectful? I mean, if you want to so readily wear the label of "Hypocrite" then be my guest, but don't for a moment think that doing behaving in the same way as someone you detest makes you any less detestable.

If anything it makes you MORE detestable, yes you read that right, because you know and believe that picketing funerals is wrong but you'd do it anyway; Phelps does not believe any such thing and is, at least, not guilty of selling out their beliefs just to be a ****.

Nope. We lose any high ground we had if we do what they do.

Unless you were going to picket with brony-style "love and tolerate the shit out of x" signs. That'd potentially irritate them in a way that simple angry signs couldn't.

My preference though would be to somehow completely prevent any kind of media coverage of his death as possible, to prevent any publicity the church might get, and treating them as the insignificant worms that they are.

It's been shown that The Westboro Baptist Church are just seeking attention, after any tragedy they make this big announcement that they plan to picket and they only picket celebrities and soldiers because they know that's what'd give them the most attention, the keyword here is attention, they thrive on it, going to picket one of their funerals, while it is deserved, will only make them realise that people still acknowledge them, and whether that acknowledgement is in a good or bad light doesn't matter to them in the slightest.

The only way to stop them is for everyone to just ignore them, that way they will either stop because nobody is paying attention to them, or they will become so desperate for attention that they resort to doing something illegal and wind up in jail.

As far as I see it, there's 2 options...

1. Pizzas. Lots of pizzas. Almost enough to feed a small country worth. Delivered in UPS (or FedEx, whoever had that website) boxes.

2. For no one, and I mean fucking NO ONE to report on it. Nothing more than a troll wants than publicity. Bob said it in his reaction to PETA, and it's still true here. WBC want the attention. If we don't give it to them, then hopefully they just fuck off back to whatever alley they dragged themselves out of.

Everybody should turn up and pay their respects to him and pray for his soul. It will be exactly what the Phelps don't want.

I'd rather go to his funeral and make it like any other, than make it stand out as something important by picketing it.
This. Not only will this piss off his family, it will also trivialize his funeral as "nothing special". All his hard-earned attention, gone!
I only had the idea because my fiancée and her church group had a run in with some of them a long time ago. They decided to pray for them whilst they were there and the other group went wild.
I'm not personally a Christian but I think the idea is rather swell myself.

what would be better is if we give it absolute zero media coverage. were obviously going to hear from them (attention hungry assholes...) so its all the more sweeter to give them no sense of achievement. that or a bill to evict them from the country.

WBC is "PETA" but for humans. They feed on attention by doing the most despicable thing possible.

Even this thread gives them too much.

Other than the fact that the WBC would probably enjoy it, I think it is the right thing to do.

How is that going to improve anything? By picketing their leaders' funeral you aren't teaching them anything new. Reacting to them with love and kindness instead of knee-jerk hatred and revenge? You'll rock their world.

No, we don't want to lower ourselves to his level. We are better than that aren't we? Best to just stay away from them.
Ding ding.

I think if anyone showed up to protest his funeral, it'd only serve to boost their morale. Remember, they aren't normal people. They thrive on the attention they get, and I'm sure they'd only feel 'blessed' by people showing up, even to protest, his funeral. Don't stoop to their level, just let the man pass.

Unwavering I answered No to this question.
I try to live a life by Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, that is:

'You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.'

Though bear in mind I do not agree with their beliefs, and I myself am a homosexual person, though by 'turning the other cheek' so to speak I have never found myself at all offended by them. But I do not deny that they have done worse things that have offended others: the protesting of military funerals, for example, I know for certain largely hurt people whose pain I wish not to belittle in any way. But regardless, rather than do the wrong thing as they do, let us do the right thing as men should.

If someone did picket the guy's funeral, wouldn't they be able to pull the 'religious persecution' card? The group makes a living from lawsuits after all.
It'd be best to completely ignore the whole lot of them, especially when Phelps finally dies.
But don't let everyone forget about Fred Phelps. Use him as a reminder of just what kind of impact cults such as they can have. Everyone here disagrees with what he stands for; picketing his funeral would just perpetuate the hate everyone here disagrees with.

Not worth it. Don't stoop to their level, regardless of how much they deserve it.

Deep down, I know we should do nothing. We are far beyond their level of bullheadedness. Naturally, the 10 year old in me wants to go there and harass them mercilessly. They are totally disrespectful and tarnish the idea of religious belief. What atheist would join a religion if these guys represent us so vocally?

Maybe a middle ground would be ideal. We wouldn't picket them on the scale that they picket others, but send 2 or 3 people to represent everyone and say a piece (with plenty of backup around to help, of course). They need to know that this behaviour cannot stand.

The best course of action is to not even care, or even notice.

That has always been the best course of action.

I'd probably do it just to give one last "Fuck you." to the bastard. I'd normally be against something like this, but his guy... he's the scum of the earth.
