Being a proud Mac owner, I have spent most of my gaming life missing out on all the joys PC gaming has to offer. I was not happy with this, but I see Windows as a broken, unintuitive, and ugly OS compared to the smooth experience that is OSX, so I wasn't about to buy a non-Mac computer. But having recently put Windows XP onto my Macbook, I have the opportunity to catch up on all the things I've missed over the years.

My cousin has let me borrow Diablo and Diablo II, and he is saying I should play them both in order. But my roommates are saying that I should just skip it and go on to Diablo II. I play games primarily as a storytelling art, ad form of literature, so part of me is saying to play through the first before tackling the second. On the other hand, I've heard the sequel is worlds better in every regard, and the story of the first is very simple and easy to catch up on.

So what does the Escapist think of this? Should I play through Diablo before playing Diablo II, or should I just move on? Or should I just raise my flame shield for my choice of OS? :p

If you want to recommend and good PC games while you're at it, feel free.

MAC USER HOW DA-

Go with Diablo first, then Diablo 2.

If anything, you'll be able to notice the steep difficulty curve Diablo 1 had in comparison to Diablo 2. You'll also be able to get a few of the references Diablo II makes to the original.

I've only played Diablo 2, and I don't feel I've missed out on any important parts of the storyline. Since Blizzard basically killed off the hero of the first game in preparation for the second, there aren't many ties to it.

I'd do it in order if you have the time. If not then just do Diablo 2, hopefully with expansion pack.

What type of macbook do you have? I used to do the Boot Camp thing with my Macbook until I got rid of windows of it and got a PC and a mac. I can probably help you since some games don't work so well on it.
So far it's been serving me well. I got an aluminum Macbook right before they announced that they would all be Macbook Pros. I have bad luck with timing like that. I can run small games like Osu! just fine, and The Last Remnant runs fine too (not at full capacity, but still pretty well). I'll be experimenting plenty: the only game that's given me trouble is the Japanese visual novel Clannad. It's giving me crap for some reason, which makes me really sad since the anime is one of my favorites... :(

You should play Diablo 1 because it kicks ass and is much more dark and atmospheric than the second. It won't take you more than 8-10 hours to check out the campaign. Then you should move on to D2, cause it's a better game.

To fully understand the story you'd need to play diablo 1. However, I've done fine my whole life without playing the first one until lately.

No! That's the worst thing you could do with the situation.

Please please please please please PLEASE play diablo I first before diablo II! the references are for the TRUE gamers who appreciate the roots of games. You'll love Diablo II more for understanding a decent story that looks like it shall transend generations, obviously because some people say just play D2 first, and the skills, monsters, items, and yes the experience curve will make diablo II much more enjoyable. If you loved being tortured just a little bit close to insanity, then you'll freak out and your head will explode when you play diablo II and go, "My god! the skills! oh shit! i've since that monster somewhere before! HAH haaa... i get it... OOOH remember when i found THAT exact SWORD in the first game? it was bitchin but now it can become so much more awesome!" just for a few. And to someone i saw above say that they killed off the original guy from the first... he didn't die. did you even play the two games?!

Umm I would say without any spoilers that I disagree immensely with this statement about the ties to the first game, and you should play Diablo before 2 to see why.

(Weren't all games made by Blizz both PC and MAC compatible?)

I HOPE you didn't mean that. WoW is for chumps (I know what I'm talking about here; I memorized every level 70 item with decent stats, and then some.)

I recommend playing the first first for story continuity. The second is a better game of course, but you said you see games as literature.

Also: "Damn, that mushrooms as big as a Cadillac!"

Yeah, but Diablo is an old game. I'll try to explain this shortly: basically, there was a time when Steve Jobs was kicked out of Apple. With the source of Apple's innovation gone, Apple's OS suffered for a while. Meanwhile, Jobs developed Unix, and when he was accepted back into the company he made OSX by basing it off the Unix system. This was such a huge jump in technology and such that older games weren't compatible. Kind of annoying, but understandable.

Whats the system stats? RAM etc.
4 gigs of RAM, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 250 gig hard drive (60 or which is partitioned over to Windows). NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 256 MB dedicated. Anything else you need to know?

That line haunted my dreams for a month when I was like 12. Until you figured out I can slam a door in his face and stick him with arrows through a nearby grate.

I only ever beat him because the fifth time through I got a bow that knocked him back and fired fast enough he never got a hit on me.

I have a high luck attribute.
