If you ever play diablo 1 make sures it first cos you wont like doing the reverse diablo 2 plays a lot better
I say play the first because D3 looks to be the mix of both story and atmosphere with the slicker combat of D2

I've only played Diablo 2, and I don't feel I've missed out on any important parts of the storyline. Since Blizzard basically killed off the hero of the first game in preparation for the second, there aren't many ties to it.
Actually, there's quite alot you missed out on. My advice is go back and play Diablo.

Being a proud Mac owner, I have spent most of my gaming life missing out on all the joys PC gaming has to offer. I was not happy with this, but I see Windows as a broken, unintuitive, and ugly OS compared to the smooth experience that is OSX, so I wasn't about to buy a non-Mac computer. But having recently put Windows XP onto my Macbook, I have the opportunity to catch up on all the things I've missed over the years.

My cousin has let me borrow Diablo and Diablo II, and he is saying I should play them both in order. But my roommates are saying that I should just skip it and go on to Diablo II. I play games primarily as a storytelling art, ad form of literature, so part of me is saying to play through the first before tackling the second. On the other hand, I've heard the sequel is worlds better in every regard, and the story of the first is very simple and easy to catch up on.

So what does the Escapist think of this? Should I play through Diablo before playing Diablo II, or should I just move on? Or should I just raise my flame shield for my choice of OS? :p

If you want to recommend and good PC games while you're at it, feel free.
Play Diablo first. Despite what the above guy said, there's actually quite alot oyu miss out on. Also, you HAVE to fight the butcher, that fight was just awesome, and his little abbattoir brings back memories.

I prefur Diablo 1 myself. If you skip to Diablo 2, you won;t get all the inside references.

Along with a lot of the other posters here, I have to highly recommend you play Diablo 1 first. There are a lot of little things in the story that pass along. It really adds to the entire experience if you've played both.

Also, the Fresh Meat thing scared the hell out of me for like six months when I was little.

I've been trying to play Diablo 2, but i can't seem to get it to cooperate with vista, any advice?
Upgrade to XP or Windows 7.

Also, you should play Diablo. Even if you won't like it. Then play Diablo 2. In my opinion, it's a lot better. But wait before playing online till 1.13. People don't have energy to play the game for now, because they told us they would reset the ladder in April. It's almost November and still nothing...

Diablo is cheap these days and easy to find, if you can be bothered it's worth playing through; Diablo 2 is much better imo... It isn't one of those series' where playing the sequel before the first one is basically slapping a child in the face with your dick though, so rest assured.

Go with Diablo first, then Diablo 2.

If anything, you'll be able to notice the steep difficulty curve Diablo 1 had in comparison to Diablo 2. You'll also be able to get a few of the references Diablo II makes to the original.

AH, FRESH MEAT.
Hardest. Sub-boss. Ever.

Hardest? More like scariest! I was totally clueless that there was a boss in that room. When I opened the door I didn't play the game for another week...focking Butcher.

Diablo is easily one of the best RPG's I've played.
Granted, the graphics are outdated now, but they scared the shit out of you when you first ran into The Butcher back in the 90's
The only game that has even remotely come close to the feel Diablo gave me, is Demon's Souls.

Play it, you won't regret it.
The music in Tristram alone is reason enough to play.

And hardest, lol. I can't kill the freaking thing! And it seems that all the enemies I've killed don't respawn or anything, so I can't go around leveling up. So I have to rely on skill rather than being powerful enough, but the "click on something until it dies" formula doesn't really allow for that too much...

i started with diablo II, playing online with friends, and was addicted to it for five months. I'm just now coming off of it (thanks to the Eddie Riggs Heavy Metal Methadone Clinic :thumbs up:) but while I was at it, one night I decided to pop in the Diablo 1 disc that game in the battle chest. I never made it past the first dungeon.

The movement in the first game is much more awkward, being locked into 8 distinct paths of motion (think North, South, East West, NE, NW, SE, and SW) which was just a pain in the ass after coming off of Diablo II's more fluid controls (allowing at least one additional step between each of those degrees). The interface was clunky, and the difficulty was stupid hard. I only played it for one hour and gave up.

My advice: if you haven't played D2 yet or are not playing it with friends, try Diablo 1. If it puts you off with its difficulty or other crude elements, don't let it dissuade you from playing Diablo 2. On the other hand, if you enjoy Diablo 1 go ahead and finish it out knowing that Diablo 2 afterwards will be an incredibly enjoyable experience. BUT, if you have friends to play Diablo 2 with, just go ahead and dive in to D2 and start living the good life.

EDIT: Good Windows XP games from years back: Deus Ex, Quake III Arena, the first Half-Life.

No running. No F***ING running. If you get Diablo 2 first, do not expect to be able to play Diablo afterwards. Sequels were made for a reason.

Planning on Half-Life, since I tried playing 2 and just got confused. Deus Ex I've heard is good, and Quake... I might try it out, but to my knowledge it has no story, which is the main reason I play games. Quake is only multiplayer, right?

You'll probably cut yourself playing D1 when you realize you're gonna be stuck walking through it. All of it. That said, it's a pretty good game, it's just, aged. Diablo 2 is a lot better. You won't lose much by not playing D1 story wise, especially since you can just wiki it, if you really want to.

Both are great games, so i say play both, and if you're playing both, you might as well play them in the "corect" order (1 first 2 secondly if you hadn't guessed that already)

The overall story is pretty simple (in both actually) but 2 has a lot of throwbacks to 1, and is prolly more enjoyable if you've played 1 (though it's a good game by itself as well)

If you're only gonna play one of them, i would go for 2 though.

there are many games that really only make sense when you play them chronologicaly. diablo II can be played before you ever have seen diablo, but the story, which i actually find very compelling (for a simple hack'n'slash game), so if you like smashing though hordes of enemies, diablo II is imho better, but playing the first one first isn't a bad idea if you'd like to follow the story
