So this is something I have wonder about recently. When it come to character creation, we pretty much create that character anyway we want other than the best portrayal of our real self (well few people do). It make me wonder would you played a game were the game custom character/ avatar look exactly like you?
Yes I am aware that is possible to do that in the game in the present (the whole face mapping in certain games or very detail character creation that let you adjust the weight and length) but what I'm talking about is the whole character from head to toe look exactly like you?

Here is the scenario-
In the future, they had come up with a technology that when you played a game with character creation, the tech can scan your face and your entire body (no need to get nude) and it will render it perfectly onto the game with no lag or error what so ever (this also saved time spend on adjusting the size/ weight of the character).
Also any game clothing/ armour/ weapons will fit accordingly onto you e.g. any bulky armour look like it will fit (yes this include skimpy/ tight clothing).
Before you asked, the said game can be anything you want it to be (I was going to limit this to MMO or rpg but that's rather plain) and the appearance will suit the graphic (if the game is cartoony then you will look cartoony in it).

Sure this will eliminate the whole playing the opposite gender to yours and the whole alter ego (if there are flaws on you then it will show up in the game) but at the same time it would be an whole new experience and a different take on avatars and the game (for one thing when you encounter another character online then that person look like the real person playing as that character). This would both be good and bad (you will see kids running about and female gamers may get harass depending how lawful the game are on harassment).

On a side note, since I know not everyone will like that idea/ concept, I'm also going to throw in the above scenario that someone/ group had made a mod/ hacked version that still allow you create the character anyway you want.

As for me, I would like to try it out. I have no problem the way I looked (I ain't handsome nor am I ugly) and it would be cool seeing myself wearing fantasy medieval armours or Commander Shepard N7 armour and etc. In saying so sometime I made the character in character creation to resemble me abit (mainly the face, ethnic and hairstyle).

I started off doing this for Dragon's Dogma but then I realised that I look like a short, very pale nerdy stick so I decided to make some cool guy with a beard instead.

If somebody wants sore eyes, they should look at you? Ewww. :p

OT: The whole idea of character creation is supposed to be having freedom playing what you like. Sure, some people may like playing as themselves, but that's not the point of the system - it's about having a choice. I personally won't play as myself. I'm just too boring and, if I need to, I have a mirror. When I'm creating a character I mostly go with some pre set configuration that looks OK (or random, if available), maybe I will modify it slightly but I don't really spend too much time on character customisation. I would, however, try to at least vaguely match what character I'm aiming for - evil one may have a scar or something like that.

Now, when playing online games, however, I certainly won't want to play as myself. I'd really think choosing the avatar to represent yourself would be priority there. And as I said, I'm boring - why would I want to play with myself? Wait... Anyway, if playing with others, I tend to choose the character that I personally think looks badass but ridiculous enough. In Half-Life, I played with the G-Man - come on, it's a guy in a black suit shooting you with a rocket launcher, how cool is that? In Killing Floor, similarly, my favourite skin is of the guy in a suit with a gas mask. What the hell, man? It's just so cool - there is a zombie specimen outbreak and this dude just runs there shooting stuff in the face. I'm aware of the chicken costume (and others) but they are just too far over the top - suit wearing gasmasked man is just classy and serious enough to keep the goofy concept at the right spot.

Hmmm, well I am a dazzling beauty...

For serious, I can imagine anyone who say me playing would just say "Wow, how arrogant are you?"
It'd be too embarrassing. I can't imagine other people would be happy playing as me either, they'd be demanding a sexy leading woman.

On secnd thought, everyone would be amazed at any cosplays I do...

They already (kind of) have this.

Madden 2013 allows you to "scan" yourself in with a direct shot and a side shot. They then let you put yourself as a player or a coach, which is something I did. It's a "Why did we play God!?!" kind of look but it is here (seriously, it's freaking ugly as sin and only like, 46% of it is because of me).

As to a perfect replica, I'd be all for it. I attempt to make all created characters look like me anyway so this would just save me time!

With that said, if it was a "story" game, I'd hate it. For example, when I'm playing Uncharted, I am playing Nathan Drake, not Tippy2k2. It would be really annoying to have Nathan Drake look like me.

Sure, I'm okay with how I look. It would be pretty cool to play an MMO where everyone had to look like the do IRL.

I wouldn't, I play games to escape reality so I like to play as something different than me. I like picking beast races first and if I do pick a human I make them different with odd hair and eye colors if possible.

I voted "I will give it a try" because I wouldnt do it all the time, creating a character is a very fun process but playing as yourself also has amusing results.

I managed to make myself once in Saints Row 2 and it was glorious.

Depends on the game. In a Pokemon game, fuck yeah I want that, but otherwise, not really. I like having the rugged beardies or the femme fatale characters in most other games.

It's imagining yourself in the character's place. It would just be wrong to watch a linear story where the main character looks like you (maybe sounds like you), but says none of your words and does everything you wouldn't want to do. It can ruin everything in that playthrough.

I'm tempted to say yes but then I realise, if it's a story and dialogue driven game it would be more awkward than watching a fat kid steal your salad and eating it. Seriously, it would just be too weird, especially if you're one of those people who absolutely must start romances in RPG's, it wouldn't look right seeing a perfect recreation of you face-battling a fictional character on your TV screen/Monitor. Although seeing myself, the short, scrawny asian kid with a fugly face being able to kill things and be a bamf? Sure why not.

I couldn't do it. I don't want to play me in an RPG - I want to create a character for the world, interact with the storyline through someone else's eyes. It's why I never try to represent "myself" in character creation. I have no problem with my looks, I'm actually quite self-confident in that respect, but I just... wouldn't want to go there.

Plus, seeing as RPGs tend to be my genre of choice, seeing myself run around in a chainmail bikini would just be... awkward as hell.

I try to do this in every game with a "create your character's look" feature. My first or main usually looks as much like me as I can manage within the confines of the system, then I explore other options on re-plays. My first Dragon's Dogma character was me with a screwed up eye, as I was having trouble and making regular visits to the eye doctor at the time. My second character looked like a Native American, and the third one was just Gutts from Berserk.

Same with Mass Effect. I'm always me, or as close as I can get, for the first trip. After that, I try to build my characters so they reflect the path I'm going to try taking them on.

I did the same with Dragon Age 2. My second character, however, was built to look as much like Army of Darkness era Bruce Campbell as possible. I had a total blast wise-assing my way through the game.

well, according to society i have an ugly face. so no i would not like to see my features while playing a game. its bad enough i have to look in a mirror, why suffer with personally putting my "horrid" face in game for all the pixel people to gape at too?

i'll let the poor bastard of a character customization to show her face for me. she's always perfect and beautiful, but Alas unlike me, she's hollow inside.

Zing?

its too personal for my tastes anyways

If it is a game about Harry Potter, then the character would look exactly like me. Going through school with glasses was thoroughly annoying when the comparison was made (all the time).

If I'm playing an RPG then I always try to make the character look like myself (where's the short and dumpy sliders?) as I find it much more immersive, so I'd find that technology fantastic. As for anything with a strong storyline with no choices in dialogue, hell no, it would ruin the game for me and probably put me off playing it after my character does something I wouldn't do/say myself.

I'm tall and look like I'm in shape, so why not? As long as the game isn't something I'd be embarrassed for people to know I play, I'm fine with it. This kind of kills multiple playthroughs though.
