Okay, I'll get straight to the point. I'm not very good at video games, and it really bugs me. I was always one of the last to be picked for the football team in the school playground and the God Of Hand-Eye Coordination still has not paid any attention to my frequent and very vocal appeals to His mercy.

To compound this, every time I do get to be alright at a game I foolishly decide to play online against others or post my scores to the leaderboards. This invariably leads to my great distress and humiliation. CoD4? MGO? Ninja Gaiden 2? GTP5? Blazing failure, all of them.

I was just wondering whether I am unique in pinning so much credence on something so insignificant, or whether I am not alone. Specifically, I'm interested in people who have thought they were okay/good at a game off line only to find they sucked online.

MGO indeed is unforgiving towards noobs and you need quite a bit of training in order to be good at it since it handles quite differently than the actual MGS4 game what with all the action and practically no stealth.

However the other games are not that way, what i think is happening is that you build up your self WAY too much in your mind. If you never thought you were the best guy around then losing wouldn't be that problematic now would it? From my experience online has it's own set of learning curve, you may have beaten the game but if you haven't spend enough hours online with it then you'll most likely get killed, bad.

As for me personally...if i decide to play a game online i'm gonna be competitive about it...i'll spend 100 hours on it sure but i'll be uberawesome :D. Currently i play soulcalibur 4 and my ranking is pretty buffed up and i don't even use the cheap chars lol.

go play combat arms it'll fix your ego right up, everyone fails at that game I get and average of 40 kills per round where everyone else is getting barely 20 and i consider myself and "Ok" Gamer.

just grab a heavy vest and an Ak47u with and extended mag from shop and you'll make it just fine.

Playing video games in GENERAL has raped and murdered my ego. Thankfully, I'm not actually crap so say most who play me, but I don't really believe it.

I have seriously bad habits: Never blocking in most games aside from Soul Calibre and Brawl without having to remind myself to do so, Moving the camera way erratically while shooting in console FPSs, and not drifting in racing games.

If I could get over those issues, I'm good, but...

Just find people you're better than and follow them around like a bad smell then you'll have your ego restored.

Playing online certainly does something to me. Just listening to the idiots on Xbox Live makes me feel like I'm in danger of contracting some kind of stupidity by association.

To answer the original poll - no, playing games online should be fun. If someone beats me, I'll applaud it and say "well played". It's not all about "pwning" people.

Other way around for me.
I thought I was reasonably good at COD4, till I took it online. There's just something about knowing you're better that thousands of people. So now I'm quite arrogant, and not very nice.
Thank you PSN.

Who says no Stealth? Its actually quite satisfying if you pull it off right. I've actually had the same guy fall for the Cardboard Box trick 4 times. Turns out Snakes enemies weren't that retarded, real people get confused too.
There's slight parts of steals in online sure but the vast majority of the gameplay is just shooting and shooting. Nowhere near the levels of stealth of the actual game where you spend half the time crawling or inside a barrel.

It might hurt you're ego but you'll learn a lot more against more skilled players than playing against beginners/low skilled players.

If you find yourself consistently top of the scoreboard then it might be an idea to find a server with higher skilled players as that's the only way to get better.

Fortunately I was blessed with reasonably good hand-eye-coordination and a fast acting brain. I've never really picked up a shooter and not been good with it. The dedicated practice to twitch-blast heads on UT PC games I can't do, and can't be bothered to learn how to.

Took me a couple of hours to start ranking in the top 3 on any CoD4 free-for-all most of the time.

The thing that pisses me off is that I'm unbelievably crap at strategy games. I'm a smart guy but I can't do them. No idea why. Starcraft online, I sucked, Dawn of War online, I sucked, supreme commander online, I sucked. Oh well, I guess I get my kicks blasting people face to face. Thank god my pc is to old to play new stuff!

Some games I actually find the multiplayer to be easier than the single player, probably because I'm not as good at dealing with a lot of enemies at once, even if they're weak.

Online gaming hurts my ego only when my friend in RL gets better at me. I'm serious, he get's better at everything, within a week he had 4000 kills in CoD4 and 2000 kills in MGO! I only had 500 kills in a week!!!@! But other than that, I couldn't give a shit if my K:D ratio is below 1, though it helps if it's above.

I used to be terrible at COD4 but I kept practicing online and now I'm pretty damn good. Hows that for a corny story?

Gaming online damaged my ego when I saw heard so many brain-damaged idjits with the grace and manners of wounded elephants in must infesting online gaming. Sheesh, to be of the same species as that...

I used to be the best at mario kart, be it super mario kart (undefeated), super mario kart, or double dash. When mario kart wii came out, I was pumped because of the online play, only to find out that japanese people are born to play this stupid game. I am still good, but not tops as I once thought I was.

However, I am unreal at DotA, where I spent most of my college career. I guess plugging absurd (3-4 hours a day for 3 years) amounts of hours into a game will pretty much gaurantee you the number 1 spot most every time in online gaming. I do miss kickin ass on that game.....
