I just use pokemon that I deem useful to beat the main storyline, and then level them to 80, breed them (Unless they are a dreamworld pokemon. gotta have dem abilities), and then level those to 80 again. Then, I enter online battles and lose most of the time. Rinse and repeat. Right now, I'm working on leveling a deino, and a porygon!

I tend to like Dragon and Steel types over everything else and focus on teaching them moves that cover their weaknesses.

As far as leveling, I level them roughly equally, with more focus on my main pokemons.

My Steel team consists of Scizor, Skarmory, Excadrill, Empoleon, Lucario and Bisharp (if I was to include legendaries on my team, Dialga would be in place of Bisharp).

My Dragon team consists of Haxorus, Hydreigon, Dragonite, Garchomp, Kingdra and Flygon (again, Dialga would be here instead of Flygon if I included legendaries).

They can hold their own against most teams.

I put down that I trained a "few" pokemon, but in reality there was only one. It was the second evolution of pidgey I found in a forest early in the game.

Also, "training" is a severe word, as I never really had to specifically think about increasing its level. Since I used it and nothing else in every battle, it was always far more experienced than anything it came up against, so it just obliterated everyone. No idea if that would still work in the more recent generations however, I only ever played the first all the way through.

I like to complete the Pokedex from each region, so I tend to level up a lot of my captured Pokemon. Some I tend to just evolve and be done with them; others I tend to train to a certain level before they evolve to learn some unique or powerful attacks.

For ages and ages I'd approach the Elite Four with a level 80-something Charizard, the three legendary birds, and two HM Slaves. If anyone took out my starter I was screwed.

Only very recently did I start properly training my dudes. I typically train until my main six are all at the same level (usually a multiple of five) with some sporadic training of a few PC Pokemon just in case I decide to use one of them.

I F*cking grind them until their little Pokemon tears fill my need for misery, until their will breaks and their very soul submitts itself to my will and they become nothing but unstoppable beings of pure power and misery, fueled only by their lust for vengeance, hellbent on destroying the world, kept only in check by my willpower, and should I ever perish, their rage will be that of an unstoppable force, sure to bring down all of civilization and take humanity with them in the darkness of the abyss.
And that's why you're never gonna be a true Pokemon Master. Have you learned nothing from all the games? Love and compassion is always the best way to train pokemons.

OT:I always prepare my team beforehand as I'm quite a pokemon nerd, which means the pokemons, moves and everything else. Also I like picking weaker mons, so that I get more of a challenge, and I try to keep them equally leveled, generally raising everyone 5 levels at a time.

6 Mains. Currently, in my game of Soul Silver, it's Poliwhirl (my favorite of all time), Beedrill, Ampharos, Pupitar, Umbreon, and Fearow. At some point, I will replace Fearow with Lugia.

Currently I'm in Ice Cave. I'm grinding my party to Lvl 55 so my Pupitar will evolve and I can teach her strength (the others in my party who can learn it already know at least one HM move).

This thread looks very familiar...

Typically I'll stick with my starter and then find anywhere between five and twelve other Pokemon that look interesting, and try them out until I find a team of six that I want to stick with. Typically I'll end up with the starter, one or two Flying types, one or two Water types, a Psychic or Ghost type, and a Ground/Steel/Dark type. I like to keep my team within five-seven levels of each other, typically ranging with the lowest level at a multiple of ten and the highest level five levels above, the rest of the team ranging in between.

Usually with a montage.

really though I train up a team of 3 from the begining and later I expand to a team of 6 and train the new ones up with exp share.

One rule though: in all games my team must have a gyarados, a pidgeot and a tyranitar

Whenever I pick up a new pkmn game, I try to pick out 6 (including a starter, of course) of my favorites from the region and level them as my mains. Then, after the elite four I'll import my buddies for the post-game stuff.

That is, Skippy my Swampert (had since ruby version)

Tempest, my manaphy (had since pokemon ranger)

and now, I'll take my bisharp, Bladestorm into all future games as well.

Find some powerful sweepers like Alakazam and start Ev training them. Also throwing them away if they faint.

All of my mains must be within two levels of the other, unless I'm gunning for some evolution from one of them as a priority. (In Emerald, I always have a Level 35 Vibrava when all my others are high Level 20's by the fourth gym)

I usually play 'nuzlocke mode', which means that you can only attempt to catch one pokemon per area and that fained pokemon must be released (there are other rules, some optional, but this is the relevant part). In that mode, it's basically level what you've got, you'll need it.

I like to do some research whilst playing the game. Then I create a balanced team with types and moves that cover for each of their weaknesses. I also make sure they level up almost equally.

Occasionally, I may switch some of my members for others if they can't seem to make the cut.
