More RPG.

But the Battle Tower puts you all at the same level. Which takes away a good bit of the RPG, since level is no longer a factor.

Pokemon is deeper than you know, especially once you learn about EVs (Effort Values) and IVs (Individual values) and the way natures work.

I would like for once a pokemon game where I play as the pokemon and fight actual fighting game style !

Then again... Every one would Choose Charzard.

I understand the term "SRPG" or even "TRPG" as some people like to call it... a misleading name i think as grid-based battles doesnt define a larger level of strategy involved. although ususally they do. saying that, I said that pokemon is strategy based because it follows the rules of how strategy is implied... the game's consequences are derived entirely by the decisions you make given the rules of the game, the game works around you selecting from the options with an unlimited amount of time to do so... this is true even if the strategic options are very limited and weak it still follows this rule.

The only strategy I use in the game is fill up all of my pokemans moves with attack moves and spam attacks, it's worked so far.

RPG.

Devil Survivor is an RPG/Strategy, not Pokemon.
Agreed.

Although I think Pokemon does have some basic strategy to it. Like which element to send out against which enemy, and having a balanced team.

Either way they are still very solid games with a complicated meta-game underneath it all

Are you sure? I've always seen Pokemon as more of an adventure game with RPG and strategy elements, but predominantly adventure. Though that's just my personal opinion, I guess...

It requires thinking ahead in all RPGs.
Tell me one RPG were you can go meander about mindlessly and beat the game easily.
Pokemon!!
I once, just for proving it was possible, played all of FireRed with the starting charmander, without ever changing it or teaching new moves to it... I just deleted old moves and replaced by the ones it learned naturally. Isn't it mindless enough?

RPG and strategy aren't usually clearly delineated. Most games in the strategy genre don't play like Advanced Wars (where your units themselves are irrelevant). Most strategy games (especially turn-based) involve the training of a team for combat, selecting a proper team, and doing battle following a strategy.

But, that's also true of most traditional RPGs. You build up your team, specialize them, and do battles following a strategy. It's kind of two parts of the same whole. Some RPGs focus more on strategy (FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, ect.) and some focus less (FFVII, Oblivion, ect.)

Some strategy games focus heavily on RPG elements (Fire Emblem, FF Tactics). Some don't (Advanced Wars, Starcraft/Warcraft)

It's neither. The genre is "Monster Trainer".
This.

Honestly, if it were an RPG or a strategy game, it would be too lacking in depth for me to consider it a very good one. As a "monster trainer," it has some merit, due to the Tamigotchi element.

That's basically it, it's not an RPG or a strategy game, it's a digital pet collection game with light RPG/strategy elements. So, if you answered the poll with either answer, you're wrong ;)

Deciding how to balance out your roster of characters so that they're most effective against the greatest range of opponents has always been a fundamental aspect of RPGs right back to first-edition Dungeons and Dragons.

The core of the game, battling is a strategic paper-scissors-rock turn based game. The rest is jsut walking. Sure you have to do some RPG things like deliver potions to some guy, or traverse the land doing quests for random people you meet. The core mechanic is that of a strategy game. It requires thought and stratagems, if only the bare minimum, like not using fire breath on a rock type pokemon. Even the contests for pokemon which play a rather minor role in the games require strategy. Technically, all of these combat oriented, turn based games are strategy games at heart. Unless they bear more weight in the story than in the fighting. If pokemon focused more on story, which it doesn't, then it would be an RPG. But then there's also the catching of pokemon. It all comes back to the same concept. Strategy. You need strategy to catch those tricky mons like Lugia or Mewtwo.

So yeah, my vote goes to strategy with bits of RPG and even some safari mixed in :). Feel free to disagree.

Edit:

Haha, me either. I guess I didn't really attribute any genres to games when I was little.

Pokemon isn't a game as no fun is involved. In order to be a strategy, thinking must be involved. It is however, an RPG.
Slow down there cowboy!

I had plenty of fun playing pokemon in my early youth.
Which probably supports your theory that thinking isn't involved... but it was still fun!
I still have fun playing Pokemon and im in college

Pokemon is an RPG. It's almost the perfect example of a JRPG.

You raise a party of pokemon, each pokemon having their own specialized abilities and type.

Oh yeah, and turn based combat.

That's pretty much impossible, or you're making an invalid point.
I find that you would have a whole bunch of trouble beating brock, misty, giovanni and the elite four.
That, or you trained other pokemon.
