1st: Squirtle, since all of my friends choose Charmander, and if you tought it ice beam, it could beat grass typs.
2nd: Totodile, I honestly choose this one at random.
3rd: Torchic, a fire breathing chicken that could learn fighting moves later on? Hell yeah.
4th: Piplup, I felt like choosing aa water starter again.

These are just the starters I choose on my first playthrough, I think I've used just about all of them.

Red: Charmander
Blue: Charmander
Gold: Chikorita (Razor Leaf at level 8 WHAT?!?)
Silver: Cyndaquil
Sapphire: Torchic
Platinum: Chimchar

I have a weak spot for fire types, as you can see. It's always rough too since 3 of the 4 starter gyms are Rock type.

I agree the originality really started to fade after the first generation. Each generation since has had re-iterations of the same pokemon with a few well-done pokemon sprinkled throughout.

Generation 2 is easily the best for me. It introduced a shitload of new things into the franchise, such as the in-game clock, the shift between night and day, Pokemon genders, and more.

I went with Squirtle, Totodile, Torchic, and then Chimchar. I liked the second game more than the others due to the amount of content on that little game cartridge. I remember beating the elite four, just to find out that you could go back to the original land. I was ticked, glad, and confused at the same town. It was good to see what eventually happened to the gym leaders and others after the first game.

It's all about the fire starters. Except Cyndaquil. But all of the others.

Besides, choosing a fire starter effectively forces you to use strategy, seek out and train a team of decent pokemon, rather than skate on your starter for 3/4ths of the game (like you could if you chose the grass starter.)

Red/Blue: Charmander
Gold/Silver: Chikorita (Hey, I like him. Besides, the second gym is Bug and the first is Flying, so I'm still making it hard on myself.)
Ruby/Sapphire: Torchic

I almost always stick to the Water types. Mostly because I really like the Surf attack.

Red/Blue: Squirtle (Went with this 'cause the first time I played Pokemon, I picked Charmander and repeatedly got my butt kicked by freaking Brock!)

Gold/Silver/Crystal: Totodile (A real monster! Probably my favorite starter.)

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: Torchic (I deviated because I saw Blaziken and literally got a woody...)

Pearl/Diamond: Piplup (Honestly, the Gen 4 starters are a bit "Meh".)

Squirtle. cant go wrong with water-types
except when the fire type knows thunder punch!
Hmm... but if the water type knows dig ya might have some trouble beating my water type
hmmm but if it knows dig that would make it a ground type wouldnt it? in that case then i would use a fighting move like says (brick break or aura sphere or something... oh i just relized edit: charizard is a flying type thus ground doesnt effect it!

I liked the fourth the best. Mainly because, by the time they reach their final evolution, they will have gained the ability to fight back against their "superior" starter.

well since i can fell this thread dieing i will share my pokemon starters:
in lst generation > It was charmander the first time ever played it
in the 2nd generation to it was all of them due to a cheat i discovered which allowed me to take all three however you had to switch the pack off in order for silver to run the game properly!
the third however i didnt get my hands on at all so i couldnt have choosen any... =0 but it woiuld be sceptile or swarpert
And finally the fourth generation where i choose the fire type chimchar and from that i breed his son nickname 'Junior' after reciveing a daughter first 'Flicky' i also have a empoleon and a torterra both of who i breed and recived through eggs!

hmmmm. you play a good game sir but there were many things that flying were weak to an ice beam could deal some good damage if it wasnt for having a weakend effect on fire types. But rock type moves could hurt if a water type learned one. same with electric attacks too. Or just strike fast and hard enough with a water attack to defeat the fire type.

just thought oh another move that helps against water types blaseiken can learn grass knot! its a grass move and has no power limit only by the weight of the pokemon being faced, but your right in the fact that charizard is the only fire type to be able to take double electric damage!

I took squirtle, back when I was a little girl who loved the color blue. I eventually decided that water sucked and went to the fire dude.
Course as the games progressed, the grass types became so much more eye catching.

Generation One will always be the best in my eyes. The game was hard, but not too hard that it made you wanna give up. Everything made sense, and Team Rocket were the bad guys in the show and the game!

Indeed. it appears that we both have a high knowlegdge of the Pokemon universe. Yes fire types are pretty good but alot of the starters are double types like how Blaziken is a fighting type so a psychic type attack could spell big trouble.
