I hate all you old school Pokemon fanboys bitching about the new ones not being as "creative" Zubat, Venomoth and a fucking cat named Meowth. Reeeeal original.

Face it, they're all fucking dull. Take off the goddamn rose tinted specs, If I can playPokemon when it was new and still realise this, so can the rest of you.

I don't have an issue with the new pokémon, the latest batch finally let me field an entire team comprised of Eevee evolutions, thus finishing my theme team <3

When I was younger (about 5) they had all the classics that you actually knew. Then a couple of years later I think they introduced more and there was nothing interesting about them. Then I grew out of it.

Pokémon is a schoolbook example of a milked out franchise. I stopped when I realized there was gonna be more after the 2nd generation.

Yes, because they don't seem to put as much effort into the series anymore. When Gold and Silver came out, they gave the series a ton of new ideas, such as the day and night transitions, the pokegear, genders, and more. Now, however, it seems like they're relying solely on the brand name to sell each new installment.

They also still use old, tired ideas. For example, they still us the random encounter system; something that every RPG should have stopped using many years ago when games like EarthBound came along and eliminated that outdated system. The last truly descent addition to the series was the redefining of special and physical attacks. I don't count Wi-Fi battles, as that was practically a must before they even started developing Pokemon games on the DS.

Get ready for a whole new slew in this years "soul silver" and "heart gold"!

seriously, how many is that now?

Edit: btw, these are REMAKES of old ones, so no new area or anything, just 100-300 new pokemon to murder.

Are there too many Pokemon? Sure.
Did I catch 'em all? Yeah.
Will I do it again in their next game? Obviously.
Their games are still fun and I still play them. Funny thing is, the only Pokemon I really use are Scizor, Charizard, and MewTwo.

2nd generation (gold and silver) were without a doubt the peek of the series(certainly the games I had the most fun with and the wave with by far the largest percentage of my favourites in it) with 3rd and 4th gen getting progressively worse(4th generation is particularly offensive to me as they tacked shitty evolutions onto some of the classic monsters).

However, whilst I agree that the quality of the actual Pokémon designs has gone downhill in the last two generations, I played, and enjoyed, both and am whole heartedly looking forward to the gold and silver remakes next year. What I want to know, is why after so may generations of this RPG players still can not customise their own avatar. Seriously, I would love that, a Pokémon game with some actual character customisation and were you can ACTUALLY catch all the Pokémon, rather than trading for half of them or having to have attended some event.

In all seriousness though despite the fact that they have added too many Pokémon now, (and many of them are practically carbon copies of old ones) at the end of the day you don?t HAVE to use the Pokémon added in any given generation whilst playing that generations games (i.e. you can use old favourites in diamond/pearl if you want with the vastly better 4th gen graphics/combat).

I think they still have plenty of ideas, Gallade? Lucario? Most are still good, yes Combee is lame but Vespiquen isn't.

Remember the first gen? A Mime and his gf? I think thats more ridiculous then flying honey combs...

Honestly, what could they do with the series if they didn't keep adding new ones? Catch them, fight trainers, and fight in gyms... then again, Emerald or FireRed is the newest I've played
(dunno which was out first), so I don't know if they've expanded past that or not... Personally, I got pretty bored with them when every trainer was beat, every wild pokemon was too weak, and the only thing to really do was fight the Elite 4 over and over again... even then, half the time they were way stronger then mine and there wasn't really any decent way to level mine up since everything else was too weak...

The most recent one I've played is Fire Red, but this kinda thing does happen to a lot of old franchises that we're nostalgic about. Bionicle continued to think of more and more weird versions of collectable "masks" and just kinda became repedative. and Transformers went rediculous with the whole beast wars thing. This kinda thing happens. People "grow tired" of the same old same old and want "more exciting things," or atleast thats what the big tv executives think

"...And the HM moves! Dear God the HM moves...Surf, dive, waterfall, paddle, float, drown, so many fuckin' HM moves I had two separate Pokemon with nothing by HM moves and the other four to actually battle"

Hahaha thank you! Those things were such a waste of space! I remember in Silver version alone there were like 3 HM's that could only be used by water types...which pretty much made my Feraligatr suck ass.
Er. You know you can hit the quote button if you want to quote someone.
My bad. Still new to this.
Also, Welcome to the Escapist! ^^
Yeah, I remember in Silver I made the mistake of teaching HM moves to Suicune 'cause I was desperate. I was being a complete idiot, then I realised I didn't know how to remove HM's :(
Also, I don't really mind the new ones, but I do find myself hating the mid-level/crappy ones much more than I used to. I didn't used to mind guys like Politoed and Dunsparce, but now I loath the ones like Bibarel and Chatot.
And to the guy who mentioned the Legendaries, I know, what WILL they do? They've already done the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, how can you top that?

Man there's a lot more "No" votes on the poll than I thought there'd be.

Anyways I think this comic strip pretty much sums up the point of this thread.

I can't tell if the series got old, or if i just grew out of it.
probably a bit of each.
I did enjoy playing ruby, so i may be guilty of something here, but in a long car journey, any game that lasts 40 hours+ is worth getting, imo.
edit: imo, yellow was the best of all the series. the surfing game rocked.

Originally (up till Diamond+Peals release) I only owned the Golden Age games (namely Red and Silver for me). However once D+P came out I got curious, and despite having little to no relation with any monsters past 151, I picked up one of each generation. I now also have Ruby and Diamond, and will be picking up SoulSilver when it comes out. Also I have FireRed and my shiny MewTwo I found in it, second shiny I ever got.
I realised when playing these that while many of the new monsters didn't endear themselves to me, the games themselves have gotten a LOT better. In pretty mcuh every way, though I do still sometimes pine for the simply GBC graphics and their retro charm...so I whip out Silver. As it happens many of the new monsters aren't great, but some are good, a few actually. Plus, the original 151 contained monsters like Tangela, and Jynx, and Mr. Mime... random creatures I was never fond of, but tolerated anyway. Same with the new games.
What can I say? I was brought up in the 90's, and I love Pokemon. Just took a while for me to come full circle.
