Recently, I decided to watch a few commentaries on games and such, and I noticed something.

In Starcraft 2, people will type out glhf (Good Luck and Have Fun) and gg (good game}, but the thing is, does anyone actually mean this stuff anymore?

As I understand the internets, a lot of people online, especially in ranked matches, don't really want to have fun, or think it was a good game when they lose. They are just typing it so they don't look like a complete ass.

What I'm trying to get at is simple: is there anyone left who is actually polite when you run around online? Or is it just silence, or the now robotic glhf and gg when its all over?

Thanks in advance.

I try to be polite online. In League of Legends, I often start the match with "glhf", and when I escape a death I'll say things like "Close one", or if I am killed in a cool way, "Well played".

Please tell me that there are others out there...

I'm always rather courteous when I play with others. Well maybe in less involved games like CoD2009 I'll be a tit once in a while, but I often work with others well and compliment nice moves, e cetera e cetera. But I do like having "****" as my username in a lot of games.

Plus it's a great indicator of whether someone has ragequit or not, because they won't type GG in that case. XD
Thats the thing though. Its just a gg. Enter, two letter hits, then enter again, then you leave. Its the sort of thing that I'm not even sure if I would consider it a rage quit because even a computer could simulate such a simple thing.

Thats the kind of stuff I will do. I'll be specific. "That was Close" or things like that, just to make polite conversation.

I was polite when I played R:TW online. Even if I was angered at the enemy's cheapness, I said GG.

RTS games usually are a lot less nutty than FPS games. Might be because FPS games are easy to play compared to RTS games that require more thought and strategy than a 13 year old idiot can manage.

Abbreviations of this sort are inherently impolite. If you want to say something, make an effort to type it out.

That said, I always thank the party after a dungeon run, regardless of success to facepalm ratio. Just because I probably will never see them again is no reason to be rude. Of course there may or may not be additional 'qualifiers' based on the above ratio... but hey, we stuck together and we won, that's worth something.

I'm usually quiet, but when I do find the urge to communicate with others, I try to be polite. Games are there for enjoyment and fun, I play them to primarily get away from rude people in real life.

That said, I also don't generally play games competitively, I'm more of a co-op person, and I'll get frustrated if a teammate dies, but I wouldn't say anything about it, maybe a "Good job not dying this time." if he avoids death in the next round.

The other day in World of Warcraft I saw someone about to die, flew down and killed the enemies around him and told him to have a nice night. I know all the people around are real people behind a computer screen, and I know I wouldn't be too happy if someone were rude to me, so I treat them how I'd like to be treated.

My goodness. I am ashamed to admit that I am an angry gamer. Whenever I lose the horse race in either Zelda OoT or Harvest Moon StH, I throw down the controller and start ranting like Bruno Ganz in Der Untergang.

"DAS WAR EIN BEFEHL! DER ANGRIFF STEINERS WAR BEFEHL!"

I can be an angry gamer, especially when I'm playing single-player games. I get easily frustrated. It's easier for me to keep myself calm when I know there will be another real person on the receiving end if I do explode on them.

By myself? I still need to get a hole in my wall fixed.

I try to be a respectful gamer. If I play a round and it's a close match, I tend to feel satisfied and will type gg and mean it, regardless of whether I won or lost. I think your attitute is important too when playing a game. It's a tense situation really and showing good sportsmanship goes a long way, as opposed to bragging and harassing other players.

No worries. We all have to rage some time or another. Some of us just do it more than others!

My thoughts exactly. Say it out. It feels a lot more personal, and not like they barely put any effort into actually thinking that was a good game, or you should have fun.

The few times I've played online I would mean it when I told everyone "good game", because it was a good game. I had fun playing, regardless of whether I won or not. To me, that's a good game.

I try to be polite in any game.

Granted, I also never use chatspeak abbreviations, but in some cases, I don't begrudge people that (especially in tense situations; I type pretty fast, but I don't automatically expect others to follow).

I am a boiling pit of rage when playing single-player platformers, but I try to stay very polite when playing MMO's. As someone who's tasted all three class roles, nobody likes a whiny, rude DPS, and I try to avoid acting that way.

Do people ever actually care how you're doing when they ask in real life? No, they pretty much just expect you to say fine; it's just a polite formality, nothing more. Same here.
That is the annoying part though. I don't just say fine. I try to actually be somewhat conversational. But I'm strange like that.

I'm generally polite. I don't start trouble, and I can admit when people pull an awesome shot on me. I usually say ns(nice shot). I haven't used "glhf" or "gg" since my tournament days of CoD(1).

I'll take the standard fake online politeness over "OMG U N0000000B!!!" anyday.
