The Problem with Political correctness is that it tries to limit free speech so people do not get offended. Every person (I don't care where you are from or what government you may have) has the right to say what you want. (Except for something stupid like yelling Fire in a movie theater that is dangerous.) Now if people get offended at what someone says Ohh well they have every right to disagree and be offended.

Example is if someone calls me a fat ugly cracker my personal reaction may be to either get angry and talk back or to laugh and walk away. I will most likely laugh because I honestly don't care what people say. If they are persistant or attacking someone I care about (friends family etc) I will stick with them and help in whatever way they need it.

In short I disagree with PC because its wrong to try and make what I say illegal or whatever because someone does not want to have their feelings hurt.

Political correctness can go kiss my a**.

All it is, is a huge inconvenience. Personally, I just call things the way I please, in a sensitive manner. If they get offended, then I simply apologize.

It's "Merry Christmas", not "Happy Holidays". When it comes to skin color then that gets more confusing. With political correctness around, I don't even know if it's right to call someone "Black" or if I'm going to end up being labeled as a racist. I know americans tend to use "African American", but that seems ever MORE offensive, I'll be kinda honest, using that term kinda forces anyone who is black as African, when I'm sure most would just see themselves as Americans and would prefer to be treated that way.

I mean, if you had two French parents and was born and raised in America, you'd kinda get fed up with people calling you "French American", because most would just like to see themselves as American. I don't know.

If this post offends anyone, I apologize.

It's just idiots, politicians and those who want to stop the people for having a reason to be angry at people.

For example, if I saw a black person I could call him a ******, African American, black or some bloke. What the fuck should he care? It's a derogative term to call him the first but only cause of black social bullshit, Africa American is untrue because many black people are not from Africa, Black isn't even true because most "black" people are brown

But if I call him one of them he can have a good reason to be angry and blame someone else for their problem.
Which is what people love doing, I could build a space rocket but Nasa won't let me near their shit so I'm stuck in a shit house.
This applies to all social demographics, not just race

Even so, what the fuck do you care, is he going to be offended? He hits you oh noes, he calls you a prick of fucking dear, he threatens you (he will never go through with it).

All in all; people are idiots, freedom of speech is a lie, everyone is slowly dying and wasting their time on gaming websites and also the game

Idiotic, irrelevant and insulting. We should be considerate of shortcomings of others, because there is a thin line between being blunt and honest and just being inconsiderate. That being said I don't see how calling alcoholics, drug addicts and fat lazy ppl differently is gonna change what they are or help them in any way.

I say "Fuck 'em!"

But seriously, stupid people will be stupid, it's up to us to ignore them until they die out.

Well, first of all I'd like to note the irony of the phrase "politically correct, my a**". Think about it.

And secondly, of course she is wrong. And a moron, to boot. There's a little thing in language that's called context. You see, words like "black" or "man" are not offensive. What word does she think we should use to describe, for example, an actual black dog?

And anyway, even IN context, words like "black" and "man" are inoffensive. Acknowledging our differences is not the same as decrying them. Furthermore, if you don't want to offend, for example, a fat person, then don't comment on their size at all. I fail to see how calling someone out as "differently sized" is less offensive then calling them fat. Either way, you are singling out an unpleasant aspect of their physique, so it doesn't really matter exactly how you phrase it. As they say, it's the thought that counts.

Anything that involves that fake sort of "trying to be nice" can go fuck itself.

Then again, I'm in that strange group of people that considers taking the piss out of gays hilarious, despite... you should know this by now.

Seriously, Q? The fuck? Why do we keep adding more fucking letters to that acronym? Why not just "everyone who isn't a dick"? (Not that I'm implying that all gays are nice. I've met some real cunts in my time)

Want to kill off an offensive word? Overuse it. Anyone called a 'fag' may get insulted if they only hear such an insult once a month or so, but anyone on Xbox Live just has it slide off their back instantly.
LOL at this! So true and so damn funny!

The thing is, when say describing an object or a person you tend to give their attributes "I have dark blonde hair and blue eyes" but if you want to be even more specific you may want to give their race and gender "I have dark blonde hair and blue eyes. I am also white and male".

I don't get it. Many-a-time I have described people to friends of multiple races and no offense was taken. How else am I supposed to describe someone? using 'politically correct' descriptions makes me sound racist.

I digress.

Also, that Maggio author doesn't seem to have all her eggs in the same basket.

Thank you for these clearly ignorant statements about obesity and alcoholism. I am not a person who approves of political correctness, but what you say here is vitriol for it's own sake, followed by a weak attempt to justify it with a completely uninformed argument.

It's easy to see that you have never had to deal with something like that and have no idea how much it can ruin your life. People like you assume that obesity and alcoholism can be turned off like a light switch and have no idea how incredibly difficult those things are to escape from and are clearly oblivious to the factors of life that can contribute to these sort of things. But rather than try to understand, it's far easier for you and people like you to assume that people who are obese or addicted to substances want to be in that situation. That we enjoy being mocked and ridiculed by someone like you. People like you who have decided it's acceptable to hate someone like that because of their appearance are no better than a skinhead or a klansman. And while I think a little good natured ribbing about certain things is fine, there's no good nature in your position. Only hatred, vitirol and egotistical self-importance.

And when something horrible like that befalls you, and people only react with hatred and humilation, I hope you think back to what I've just said.
Wow, so easy for you to assume that I've encountered neither, when in fact alcohol abuse nearly crippled my family. But the man turned it around, sought help and made something of himself.
Did I say that its easy to stop either? No! So why did you say that I did!?!
It's very easy to become an alcoholic or fat, however, and it's down to bad lifestyle choices. To say that being fat was something that befell a person is to easy. In most cases, the person is to blame. And I know that it's not easy to fix. Tough. Get out and do the work! If you don't care enough about your health to try and get better, then you don't deserve my respect or good nature.
Fatness is not appearance that people have no control over, it's a bad lifestyle choice, like smoking or drugs.
In the vast majority of cases, the fat person is to blame and should take responsibility.

Would that be okay with you?
That depends, what is your thesis?

yeah, they should be like the rightist and just try and enslave and kill, sigh, what is the world coming to
I'm not advocating being a rightist. I think both extremes are equally stupid.

I'm not a big fan of what "political correctness" stands for these days.

Yes, you do need to take your audience into consideration. For example, I wouldn't swear if talking to my family, as I know they have issues with it, but the odd rude word can enhance a conversation between friends.

With large crowds, you need to use whichever word(s) come across best to the majority of the audience. Some of the substitutions that people make don't make any sense, which can be even worse than trying not to offend people. Equally well, as an audience we shouldn't be getting annoyed over something that was not intended to offend.

Political correctness, all you need to know. This is what happens when you let hairy Australian metalheads have their say. They get it bang on the money, rather than some stupid uptight *****. Offense should come from intent. You can't be 'accidentally racist' or whatever.

First, the context.
I am in the middle of writing a Persuasive essay on Freedom of Speech on College Campuses (worst topic ever by the way). As part of this assignment, I have to read various articles on the topic for homework so I can use some of them for source material and/or supporing/counterarguments.
Tonight's reading is called "Bias-Free Language: Some Guidelines" written by Rosalie Maggio. In this essay, Maggio says that political correctness is very important and that we need to activly work to instatute it into everyday language. At it's core this is a good thing, but the way she wants us to go about it sucks away all the credibility of the argument and throws the article into "parady mode."

Maggio says that when refering to a group of mixed gener or a person of unknown gender, we must not use words and phrases that imply masculinity (he, sir, waiter, ect...). Again, hard to dispute, but later she goes to suggest the general removal of the letter combinations m-a-n and m-e-n from many everyday words.
Under this policy, we would also have to change a great many other words on the grounds that they might offend 1 person out of 10,000. Fat would become "big-boned" or "differently sized", Stupid becomes "exceptional", and Stoned would be re-branded as "chemically inconvenienced".To prevent the chance of seeming racist, we would need to change "black eye" to "mouse", "black mail" to "payola", and "black sheep" to "outcast".
And these changes would need to be implemented, not just in writing, but in verbal communication as well.

To me, this is utterly rediculous. But I want your opinions as well.
So, what do you think?
You could probably score a lot of point with your teacher by writing a Persuasive Essay titled this 'Pursuasive essays neccesarily use biased language as a method of persuasion' subtitled 'How "Bias-Free Language: Some Guidelines" is ironically written from a biased perspective.'

All written word is Subjective to the person writing it, therefore it is biased in some way or another. People often pretext a biased or skewed argument by stating they are behaving 'Objectively' or 'My unbiased oppinion is...'

Its like this: Have you ever heard someone say 'With all due respect...' and NOT followed it immediately with a disrespectful comment? No? Me neither.

And thats my unbiased oppinion ; )

I think politically correctness is bollocks. I think there are always consequences for all speech, I just can't see why people should be limited in what they say. If you act like a racist douche then I will try to be involved with you as little as possible.

The gist of my thesis is that political correctness is a load of bullshit (yes ms. Maggio BULL shit, not Animal shit).
And that Maggio really needs to shut the fuck up about it.

As I understand it you're argument is a slippery slope fallacy. Unless of course she was saying he should not use the word 'fat' etc.

Anyway, here is the Chairman of the Conservative Party in the UK:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3620/3505019990_6e6a5a7eb8.jpgp.

If you're react to this is 'lol' then maybe this politically correct person has a point, if your reaction is 'so what?' then maybe the person is wrong.

For anyone confused about my question then her race has nothing to do with it, its the fact that the Chairman (official title) has tits. Quite a pair actually but err, thats not very pc of me.
