He-llo! And WELCOME to the NINETEEN FORTIES.

Heaven's sake, people, learn from history so that you are not doomed to repeat it.

My view on stuff like this is noninterventionism. If a child that has been born can't live without a high level of medical interference, then it's best that it doesn't.

Ideally your idea doesn't sound so bad.

However, all it takes is a little money here and there, and they can make up mental disorders out of thin air.

I don't like the idea, mainly because it is waiting to be abused.

It seems that from what I read from comments online, that people are moving back in that direction.

I truly believe some people should be sterilised but not because of an illness.

Stupid people (I don't mean "learning difficulties" style I mean absolute tool with the IQ of a sea sponge due to just generally being an idiot) should be sterilised.

At no point before a kids 10th birthday should that child look at it's parents and realise it already has them beat on the brains stake.

I hate to break Godwins' law so quickly but you do realize this smacks of Hitler-esque talk right? If this law went into effect no mentally ill person would seek out the help they need no one would see psychiatrist or psychologist, and a lot of people would be rightfully afraid to see a general doctor

And to the people that voted YES. Say hello to your new friend

Hypothetically, let's say that tomorrow medical professionals definitively prove that people that are mentally ill have a one hundred percent chance of passing on their mental illness to their children. If a law was proposed in your state, country, province, etc. that would mandate compulsory sterilization for all mentally ill people to prevent the spread of their diseases, how would you vote on the proposed law?

I don't want constitutional rights to factor into your decision just a clear yes or no. Also you don't have to say what your decision was or can vote one way and say you voted the other way, I want the voting to be completely anonymous; and remember this is completely hypothetical.

By mental illness I mean Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depression, etc. I am talking about the ones which usually end up putting a person in the hospital. Just to make things easier we can assume the Supreme Court will rule that the law is constitutional.
Hypothetically speaking, this is a bad way to start yourself in the Escapist, using a loaded question like that.

After suffering a psychotic episode myself, I'd have to say no. Mental illness are spectrum disorders - there's no clear boundary that says someone will be crazy. And environmental factors are far more important in triggering mental illness. My episode was triggered by stress, little sleep, and various other factors. Work to prevent these instead of sterilising those mentally ill.

What would this serve? Seriously, even in the long-term?

Well in this part of the world, anyone who doesn't think the same way as everyone else is deemed "mentally unstable".

Don't belive in God? Mentally unstable.
Don't want to get a job? Mentally unstable.
Want to have sex out of wedlock? Mentally unstable.
Can't form sentences properly? Mentally unstable.
Autism? what the fuck is Au-Mentally unstable.etc.

So no, I wouldn't want to be castrated seventeen times every day. Call me mentally unstable?

Assuming "mentally ill" applies only to the severest of handicaps (i.e. anything that renders you incapable of managing your affairs and requiring full-time or nearly-full-time care, or that requires a guardian to be appointed for you), then I would support compulsory sterilisation. If you had kids under those conditions, you wouldn't be able to appreciate or care for them anyway, and it would just perpetuate, since you've given a 100% pass-on rate.

I agree that it's open to abuse... and so anyone that is caught abusing it will get sterilised and lose any gains / benefits they may have gained as well!

My mother has severe depression (and I think Bipolar but she wont see a doctor), and she's had 4 kids. Honestly, wether or not I will `inherit` it has been on my mind a lot. But your question here is basically asking if people with mental illness deserve the right to reproduce (and the right to live).

Of course they do.
