It seems that from what I read from comments online, that people are moving back in that direction.tahrey said:He-llo! And WELCOME to the NINETEEN FORTIES.
Heaven's sake, people, learn from history so that you are not doomed to repeat it.
Hypothetically speaking, this is a bad way to start yourself in the Escapist, using a loaded question like that.infinity^infinity said:Hypothetically, let's say that tomorrow medical professionals definitively prove that people that are mentally ill have a one hundred percent chance of passing on their mental illness to their children. If a law was proposed in your state, country, province, etc. that would mandate compulsory sterilization for all mentally ill people to prevent the spread of their diseases, how would you vote on the proposed law?
I don't want constitutional rights to factor into your decision just a clear yes or no. Also you don't have to say what your decision was or can vote one way and say you voted the other way, I want the voting to be completely anonymous; and remember this is completely hypothetical.
By mental illness I mean Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depression, etc. I am talking about the ones which usually end up putting a person in the hospital. Just to make things easier we can assume the Supreme Court will rule that the law is constitutional.
After suffering a psychotic episode myself, I'd have to say no. Mental illness are spectrum disorders - there's no clear boundary that says someone will be crazy. And environmental factors are far more important in triggering mental illness. My episode was triggered by stress, little sleep, and various other factors. Work to prevent these instead of sterilising those mentally ill.infinity^infinity said:Hypothetically, let's say that tomorrow medical professionals definitively prove that people that are mentally ill have a one hundred percent chance of passing on their mental illness to their children. My mother has severe depression (and I think Bipolar but she wont see a doctor), and she's had 4 kids. Honestly, wether or not I will `inherit` it has been on my mind a lot. But your question here is basically asking if people with mental illness deserve the right to reproduce (and the right to live).infinity^infinity said:By mental illness I mean Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depression, etc. I am talking about the ones which usually end up putting a person in the hospital.
