Wait, female circumcisions are an option? I've honestly never heard of anything along those lines.

I don't like it. And as I said, if by some distortion in the very fabric of reality, I reproduce, I will avoid interaction with my child's genitalia in any and every way.

Anyhow, my point was that I don't think male circumcision is as much of a problem because it essentially poses no permanent health risks, apart from infection as with any cut you might receive. Female circumcision, on the other hand, has a much greater risk of infections or problems simply due to the nature of the organ (and the conditions which the procedures are typically done).

Now, circumcision at infancy is a whole other can of worms. I'm not quite sure how I feel on that yet, but I'm more leaning toward that's the sort of decision the individual should make when they're old enough. I don't think a parent has the right to choose to permanently change the physical appearance of their child.
You are right about the no permanent physical health effects on circumsision but that is only true based on todays standards of hygene. If we were to be set back a few hundred years in that department we would very quickly discover why evolution gave us foreskin.

I also wholly agree with you on the choice issue.

It's not really circumcision, much more the equivalent of a castration.. in fact the term FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) or Clitorodectomy is preferred nowadays, depending on whether you're talking about generally removing/altering bits of a woman's external organs or specifically removing the external part of the clitoris.

Naturally, removing the clitoris results in an almost total loss of sensation during sexual activity, hence why it's considered quite bad.

People often forget that Americans and some Europeans were doing it routinely to nymphomaniacs and lesbians until about 50 years ago.

EDIT: More like 60 now, I keep forgetting it's 2011.

In case non-African users don't know, the FCG Education and Networking Project estimates more than half of females in Kenya are circumcised, so it's pretty much the norm here. However, a backlash started in recent years among women who felt there were certain disadvantages to being circumcised, and there are numerous websites devoted to rehabilitation. On the other hand, there are also lots of guys (and some women) who argue that being circumcised is better.

Personally, I'm cut, but my parents are hardly religious so I'm not sure why they had me circumcised, but not that I've really been jumping to have that conversation with them. If you have a daughter, will you have her circumcised?
You do realize that most of the world considers female circumcision a form of mutilation right? they remove some pretty important parts down there.

...bloody hell this made me laugh xD.

Nice one lad. I, too, saw what you did thaaar.
Edit: I also find it pretty funny how some people don't get the joke. Eeeep.
joke or not you can't see a persons face on the internet. so if the issue is sensitive like this one I try to reply objectivly. and although making satire about such issues is perfectly acceptable to trigger debate, that is what your going to have to accept to get, debate.

and I saw this topic before I was the other :S so I'm pretty much trying to explain myself out of being a bit rash in my jumping on 'recent post' entries. still I stand by what I said. And it's a thing that happens so I felt inclined to try and reply in an as balanced as possible fashion.

And that's the truth of it right there.

Girls can be circumcised?
Yup, and you can't even use the argument that its more hygienic. Circumcision is seriously messed up stuff. I can't believe people actually do that out of choice and argue that its a normal thing.

(Yes people, I had that conversation once. Its now normal to cut apart your tallywacker. Go figure)

Is it even practiced in countries other than african? Only heard of it happening in those regions (and what religion is it connected to? As far as i know most of the african countries are muslim and/or christian). Would i have it done? Hell no....didn't know it was such a common practice...always heard of it as a forced procedure in very rural areas.

If I had a daughter, I wouldn't have her circumsised. I see no benefits for it, so why do it? Besides, I'm fairly certain that it's illegal in the US anyway, so why risk jailtime over something that probably doesn't have any benefit anyway?

No, and I wouldn't circumcise my son either.

Though I believe that it is a serious issue, that without permission, we have no right to alter the body of another human, I also see that people tend to blow this out of proportion. Humans have been severing bits and pieces of their bodies, piercing themselves, marking and bending their bodies in many more ways for millennia for a myriad of reasons (most of them religious). It's not "right" but it's also not the worst thing that can happen to you. Get over yourselves.

On a slightly unrelated note I'm a little shocked that some people seem willing to risk having their theoretical daughters tortured just so they can throw theoretical poo at a woman on the internet.
Actually, by the way your poll is set up, there's no reason to assume that the Escapist can't throw poo at you for even asking while at the same time keeping their daughters as far away as possible from psychotic doctors.

OT: I voted "no" because I can't quite tell what your motivation here is. If you're trying to get Escapist readers to go "what the hell is this horrible crap!" and avoid it, then good for you.
If you're trying to imply that this sort of thing is okay, then I'd like to change my vote to throwing poo at you.

from my limited understanding of it. for women it serves no purpose. i dont even know why you would even consider it in the first place. from what i understand it would just make sex less enjoyable for the girl. is that the point of it? since it seems to only happen in countries where women are 2nd class citizens.

It doesn't serve any purpose to me or woman, but at least with men if it's done right there's no real harm.

No, and I would gladly beat anybody to within an inch of their life if they admitted to having their child undergo that sick procedure. It is inexcusable.

Edit: Maybe with the sole exception of cases where it was known that the child would grow up to be mentally handicapped in a severe way, as sexual urges add a whole array of problems to an already fraught existence for the guardians. I've witnessed a compulsive masturbator [admittedly male] of that kind, and it's not a good thing.
