I'm mixed.

Silent Hill 2 & Fatal Fame 2 are easily the best in 'atmospheric horror' you can get...to me.

However, the rest of both series are kind of mixed.

Amnesia
Will.
Fuck.
Your.
Shit.
UP.
I have NEVER been as scared in my life as I was playing that game. The fact that you can't kill the monsters coupled with the INTENSE atmosphere and sound production makes it a supreme head-fuck.
Get the demo (Or buy it for $20)....and then shit yourself.

Since there's no Penumbra and Amnesia up there, I'll go with Fatal Frame. A little cheaper in terms of scares (ghosts surprising you when use the camera) but just as good as Penumbra and Amnesia.

Well the only games there what have got in to my head were Silent Hill and Fatal Frame. Personally Fatal Frame totally fucked me up whereas I somewhat adapted the horror in Silent Hill, by which I mean I got used to it.

Btw if you like the scares Haunting Grounds is very good. Rather scary!

This hurt my brain. The game play was creepy enough, but the voice overs put it over the top.
I know I pretty much shit myself when it said, "Christopher" since that's my name...

I know right. The confusing level design leaves you vulnerable for the complete mindfuck that is the story. It's like they burn your skull away with acid before they unleash the gigantic penis so that it can more easily fuck your mind. Wow, that is a pretty gross metaphor actually.

I prefer "Condemned: Criminal Origins". Still haunts me whenever I am in a dark urban area.

Alone in the Dark. I'd get my Uncle to play it while I watched, and it was just terrifying for my five year old self.

I thought Dead Space was frightening. If a LittleBigPlanet version of the game nearly scared the pants off me, it says loads about the real game.
Is that for real? Some one actually went and duplicated that mind twisting, gore filled, surprise fest onto such a cute and cuddly platform?

Side note: I haven't played a lot of real horror survival games, but my friends does, a lot. He told me that Dead Space was one of the scarier ones he had played, so I gave it a try as well. Needless to say, sleep came hard that night.

Granted the only games on the list I've played are Resident Evil and FEAR, FEAR is the only game that has ever scared me.

Going off the list, Dead Space was scary for the first level or so, same thing with Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock, but FEAR was the only game that has scared me until literally the last second before credits.
