His absence from the battlefield. The perfect soldier does not kill. The perfect soldier is a diplomat.
Someone ate a big heapin' bowl of pussy flakes this mornin'. Just kidding. I guess the thing that makes the best soldier would either be discipline or his ability to kill while avoiding being killed.

soldiers sometimes need to be sacrificed, that is war, or other people that need to be sacrificed.
if a soldier with a heart goes all heroic, that will bugger up the grand scheme of the commander, and if things happen like the commander had in mind, it will work out for the best.

Stamina primarily, even a hot headed jar head can still do physical labor, moveing shit around is still soemthing that needs to be done.

Mental stamina is next, calmness under fire, taking sht from the higher ups,ect

Intelligence(or mental agility) is another you need to be able to follow the chain of command and think on your feet.

In the old days you only needed stamina now adays you need a mix of mental capability and a good to keep up with all the tech and crap you have to do.

Both, as you could live without neither. however, an artificial heart would be much the same as a real heart, whereas a real brain is much better than an artificial computer brain, so I'll go for brain.
I'm talking about your will to fight for your country sort of thing for heart, and intelligence on the battlefield brain:p

Depends largely on his job. If one is talking about an infantry man, the most important thing is that he can accept and execute an order without hesitation. This one quality is so important that the vast majority of military training is based around instilling this in soldiers.

His heart seriously do you think love can bloom, even on a battlefield?

Rather his teamwork/ability to follow orders and not put his unit in jeapoardy.
if he just fights withouth propper motivation he would not be as effective, he haves to have his heart set in "this is the right thing" and his mind set in "this is how should be done"

no heart?? he doesnt care, he will not fight as hard as he could
no brain?? well... stupid people tend to die in a battle field

A good soldier is the one that follows orders and doesn't ask questions. That's it.

However, a good warrior or a good man are a different story and have a far longer list of requirements.

I was wondering your views on what makes a good soldier , his Brain or his Heart or maybe a combination of both (but that kinda makes this poll pointless)

Luck. That's what makes a good soldier: it enables him to survive.
On the battlefield, heart and brain are not much use. (apart from letting you live)

Undying devotion to the God-Emperor.
Utter fear of the Commissariat.
Loyalty to his troops.
Faith in his weapons.

Oh, and I suppose brains are pretty damn important as well.

And the ability to charge at twenty-two foot fang-toothed tentacle beasts with bayonets fixed and a prayer on his lips?

The ability to fight until a sufficently high number of his comrades are dead that their broken corpses can be piled into a giant heap and tipped onto the enemy's most elite troops?

The instinctive knowledge of exactly when to duck?

Reply to myself: probably a soldier is better off if he dies in the first fighting than to see all his comrades die beside him brutally, and live on with his emotional scars and guilt.
