Ahem, the hypocrisy is absolutely astounding! You cannot advocate adblockers YET what does PubClub do? Blocks ads!

"That's right, silly forum user...you can't promote it, but if you buy the adblock we promote, we will give you stuff!"

Reminds me of part of a skit by this one comedian...

Yeah, no. Even as I type this, I see both SugarDVD ads on top and on bottom.
I would think if you were going to go with one of Bill Hicks's skits on the hypocrisy of animadverting you would have went with the hypocrisy of sex in advertising:
I admit, your entry is better suited for this discussion than mine is. Though, as I read the OP, all I had going through my mind was "Those hypocritical bastards" and thus, the one I posted kinda was my default choice.

Meh - if the PS3 porn service wants to buy the ad space, then they are paying for our content. No shits do I give.

I'll just go back to not paying any attention to the ads unless they crash my computer (I'm looking at you El Shah... whatever it was called).

That's not hypocrisy, and you damn well know it. Unless you've entirely forgotten the point of ads.
Let's see...

hypocrisy (n) - 1. the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp/ the pretense of virtue and piety

2. an act or instance of this

The point of ads is nullified when a business that claims to be public-friendly engages in ads that aren't. To be clear, I don't mind them making money - that's what they're supposed to do as a business; but when they pull crap like this, I'll call it how I see it, especially when they've banned users for doing what they are doing now.

Hypocrisy.
The porn ads? Hypocrisy, if likely accidental.

The Pub Club "Adblocker"? It's not an ad block, it's a full website makeover, so no, it's not hypocritical.
Then explain THIS if you would be so kind.

The fact that The Escapist punishes those who advocate some form of adblock yet, sells their own form of it is both points of the definition of hypocrisy. The same goes for the ads. Again, I don't mind them making money - but when it involves two-faced tactics like this, I won't hesitate to call it out.

The Escapist can do better than this. Or at least I would hope so.
The ads have been replaced with different things entirely. It's not a traditional ad-block.

And if you call that hypocrisy, then you and I have nothing to say to each other.

Yeah this seems kind of odd, does this mean we can link to porn now, because I'm fairly sure linking to porn sites is against the forum rules?
This. I'm not in a huff over it. But...really escapist? Kind of wasn't expecting it.

I don't think there should be porn ads on the site, mainly because this just doesn't seem like the place for them. That said, the hostility being put forward by some is understandable but strikes me as a fine example of knee-jerk reaction.

The evidence we have so far is as follows:

There are porn ads on the site. This means either a decision was made to put them there, or they are not there on purpose. A lot of people seem to be assuming the former. As yet I see no reason to. If someone from the Escapist management were to come out and say that they are there on purpose, hostility may well be justified.

Until then it isn't. Oh, and according to Andy Chalk's twitter he was not aware that these ads were being run and was told when he did the article on the porn-in-your-PS3 thing that they would not be running any ads for it. It would seem we have more evidence for assuming that this was not something done on purpose than we do for assuming that it was.

In conclusion? Wait until we have more information before going batshit. If the situation then justifies batshittery, great, have at it.

Until then, wait patiently for a response and understand that the Escapist is run by humans, not robots.

Porn that I have to pay for? Preposterous!

Captcha: Hobby-horse.

Maybe there's a porn flick somewhere in that PS3 service that involves a hobby-horse...

To Google!

Ads exist for the sole purpose of revenue. Pubclub members pay for the privilege of not seeing ads, among other things. In other words, the membership fee replaces the ad revenue. Not hypocritical.

Key words here:

Not traditional? All semantics, nuances and pettiness aside, I would agree with this. However, the italicized still remains - "ad-block", and since it's still being used to divert ad attention, it still is, by definition, an "ad-blocker".

Still an ad-blocker. Still hypocrisy.

Agreed. Agree to disagree, as the saying goes. I look forward to our next debate, good sir!

Again, I must point out...

See, the whole thing is over "adult movie" advertisements. Which, Orwellian not withstanding, is pornography.

Now, the whole banning of mentioning adblocks while The Escapist promotes their own somehow doesn't qualify as hypocrisy...I'm up for debate on that. I still feel that is a form of hypocrisy, by definition. The exchange of money does not diminish this fact, I believe.

Psst. It's not hypocrisy because the use of adblocking is not banned.
Use? No.

Promotion there of? You betcha.

Exchange of money does not diminish the fact.

Going to bed now, will try to respond to all future quotes tomorrow night.

My god people. Relax. The Escapist do not "approve" every ad that runs on their site. They get a contract with some other company, who advertisers give their ads too, then the company plasters those ads over all the websites they have ad space on. The staff wouldn't have known this was going to happen any more than we did. In fact, some of them may even not have seen it, since it seems to be region specific like most ads. I can't see them anyway.

https://twitter.com/#!/AndyChalk
See, right there. At least one staff member had no idea, and is actually quite unhappy with it. Calm down, wait, it's not as simple as them taking it down. As I said, they don't put the ads up, they just sell the space. They'll have to contact the ad provider and get it sorted.

As for my opinion on it, while I'm not one to get up in arms about porn, it doesn't really belong on this site at all, so I hope this is resolved quickly.

Even as I am typing this, teh porn ads are above and below. -_-

Escapist, you do know that some of us like to have the door open when we are on the computer? A door that leads to a hallway that is frequented by other members of the household who might not approve of the viewing of pornography? Just letting you know...

Just because the porn is being offered on the PS3 doesn't mean it's actually gaming related.

It seems a bit hypocritical for the Escapist to allow these ads up whenever the users can't even really link to a picture of a tasteful nude. Don't get me wrong, I realize this could have just gotten sneaked in somewhere and that the people at the escapist don't necessarily want to advertise this...but still, my point stands.

More than that though....I'M SICK OF TITS! I am! I'm so sick of seeing boobs everywhere. Between ads and images from various video games, I'm just tired of skimpily dressed women showing off their tits.

Where's the sugarDVD ad with a man in his boxers? Equality people!

It's like the Meebo fiasco; the main thing that annoyed me about it is that it was a kind of ad that, in general, you only find on porn sites and other malware ridden parts of the internet. It made the place look disreputable, like the kind of website you would be embarrassed to be caught browsing in a public place. These ads are that times 10.
