It's an excellent game. It's short, but the puzzles are clever, the story is clever, and there's some great humour. I recommend everyone try it at least once.
Ok but what story? what characters are there? Ive seen nothing but the Glados robot and some guy running around with the portal gun.
Girl, not a guy.

And that is the story. Your main character is a mute. Glados is the entirety of the dialogue with the exception of a few choice lines from some turrets.

The story works well though. It's clever.

Portal is definitely worth the money and can give you a great deal of enjoyment if you go into it right.

I was just playing it a minute ago. It's got more replay value than you'd think, when you first play it. Especially if you like mental challenges. If not, go play CoD or something. But Portal is definitely an intelligent game. Very good, very funny, and you'll finally be savvy to all the memes.

Portal is a fun little game, and it's quite funny (if you haven't been on games forums in the last couple of years and are sick of the jokes). That being said, it is really short and it doesn't offer a great deal in terms of replay value.
See thats what im afraid of. Ive heard that its ungodly short, so if there is no replay value is it still worth it?
There are around 20(?) challenges that become available after you complete the game. That should keep you busy for a long time.
That being said I got it with the orange box and I enjoyed it greatly.

They are the characters. The story is short it's hard to give hints, and I'm not really sure how I'd describe it, it's both great but in a way almost non-existent. It's really good though, it's not full price is it? Just buy it already! It is short but you can dl challenge rooms I think. Just do it.
Alright alright, keep your knickers on.

Hmm didnt even know that much about the game. But its also short. I know you kill Glados, but i dont know why. Is she fucking with you or something? I love a story so whats the reason you gotta kill the robot lady?

Speaking of which, ive never played either of those games or their predecesors. I played Half life 1 when i was young but dont remember a lick of it. Is the whole orange box still with it seeing as how id get two extra games i know nothing about?
I got the Orange box before I played Half-Life 1 and I still enjoyed Hl2's story, you don't have to know anything about HL1 to enjoy HL2' story.

What about Team fortress two. Is that just a strictly online game?

You say that but there are a couple people in this thread saying not only is it good, its god on wheels. So is if its just meh, is it still worth it?
Well it depends.

Has the majority of the game been spoiled for you? If that is true, then Portal will not be nearly as good as people say it is. However, if you like the idea of a unique puzzle solving system using Portals, then I would recommend Portal, even if people have spioled the game for you.

the question is are you the type of person who goes to the theatre? or waits until a movie is out to rent because of the price? will you go to the theatre and possibly pay 20 bucks for a ticket and snacks just to see a work of art in a cinematic experience? or are you thrifty and wait till you can rent it on netflix?

as i've already said. personally, the 3 hour experience was well worth what i paid for it. it restored my faith in gaming that had been slowly burned away by bazillions of generic FPS halo clones... including halo's 2 and 3...

I won't to tell you, as that would ruin it. Going into games blind is a lot more enjoyable for me and I hope it is for others too. The game is as much about the story as it is about the gameplay and the atmosphere. I wouldn't want to make the game less good than it could be.

Thanks for the input. Once i get into a game, i stay into it for as long as it takes; which is why id hate playing it, beating it, clearing the challenges in say a Week then waiting for more money to go get a new game.

I wouldn't say it's overrated more overhyped (if that make any sense)... the game is amazing in a few ways, the key thing is that it's so well designed. The levels are very well thought out, the designers introduce you to each concept of gameplay with an example which helps you learn how to master differant things with the portal gun; and then it places challanges infront of you where you have a few options to pass through the level using the skills you've aquired.

It's differant from anything out there really. I think that portal is one of the most well designed and polished games out there. Theres a differance between that and the "best game evar" though.

It is definately worth it though, for god's sake the orange box is only $20, buy it already. You get three great games in one package. My same opinion about portal applies to half-life as well. HL1&2 are 2 of my favorite games ever (I've spent 6-7 years of my life playing HL and its many mods), but that doesn't nessicarily mean you're going to orgasm while playing the game (like some people appear to expect to from all the praise it receives).

I disagree , I found it to be near gaming perfection.
It's horribly short, I will give that as a short coming though you can fill some time with the advanced courses after the actual game has completed as well.

TF2 is strictly online, but it is the best online game I have ever played. More content is constantly added to it to (if you play the PC version).

If you don't have the Orange Box then I recommend buying that rather than just Portal.

Oh definitely, Half life 2 + episodes is a great experience and you can't do better for multiplayer than TF2 (which is always getting free updates, so it's always fresh)

It's a great game, and I would advise that you buy it. Just remember this is a pretty short game (most people complete it in less than 8 hours), and it is mainly a puzzle solving adventure with some great dark humor. If that sounds like your brand of vodka, then pick it up and enjoy the glory of getting your cake.

Nah not enough of it has been spoiled for me not to like it. I like puzzle solving, but i also like story. Is their balance?

Yeah, its completely online but don't let that stop you! Its probably one of the better online games I've play recently.

Yes, yes and yes.
The answer to all your questions is "Yes".

All the games in the Orange Box are great, not only do all the critics agree, so do all the gamers, as you said yourself even Yahtzee thinks so and he doesn't like anything.

Why are you so wary of trying games that everyone thinks are great?
