Portal is a fun little game, and it's quite funny (if you haven't been on games forums in the last couple of years and are sick of the jokes). That being said, it is really short and it doesn't offer a great deal in terms of replay value.
See thats what im afraid of. Ive heard that its ungodly short, so if there is no replay value is it still worth it?
the question is are you the type of person who goes to the theatre? or waits until a movie is out to rent because of the price? will you go to the theatre and possibly pay 20 bucks for a ticket and snacks just to see a work of art in a cinematic experience? or are you thrifty and wait till you can rent it on netflix?

as i've already said. personally, the 3 hour experience was well worth what i paid for it. it restored my faith in gaming that had been slowly burned away by bazillions of generic FPS halo clones... including halo's 2 and 3...
Ill do both honestly haha. Id get right to asking price if its worth it, but im not sure if it is yet, ya know? I agree about the Halo thing BTW

Oh wow. I'm actually the only person on the forum who didn't like portal according to the poll. Bloody hell.

It's an excellent game. It's short, but the puzzles are clever, the story is clever, and there's some great humour. I recommend everyone try it at least once.
Ok but what story? what characters are there? Ive seen nothing but the Glados robot and some guy running around with the portal gun.
Girl, not a guy.

And that is the story. Your main character is a mute. Glados is the entirety of the dialogue with the exception of a few choice lines from some turrets.

The story works well though. It's clever.

Portal is definitely worth the money and can give you a great deal of enjoyment if you go into it right.
Hmm didnt even know that much about the game. But its also short. I know you kill Glados, but i dont know why. Is she fucking with you or something? I love a story so whats the reason you gotta kill the robot lady?
I won't to tell you, as that would ruin it. Going into games blind is a lot more enjoyable for me and I hope it is for others too. The game is as much about the story as it is about the gameplay and the atmosphere. I wouldn't want to make the game less good than it could be.
I appreciate that, but im still shaky. Id like to play it, but for the 3 hours that it goes for, the story doesnt seem like it would develop that well.

Definitely worth the money, but I'd just buy the entire Orange Box.

There isn't much of a real story, but there are a lot of underlying things that you can look into. It's a very good game, but the thing itself won't last you much longer than a few days depending on how fast you are at beating it.

It's quite short, but interesting, and with plenty of replay value.

Speaking of which, ive never played either of those games or their predecesors. I played Half life 1 when i was young but dont remember a lick of it. Is the whole orange box still with it seeing as how id get two extra games i know nothing about?

I got the Orange box before I played Half-Life 1 and I still enjoyed Hl2's story, you don't have to know anything about HL1 to enjoy HL2' story.

What about Team fortress two. Is that just a strictly online game?
TF2 is strictly online, but it is the best online game I have ever played. More content is constantly added to it to (if you play the PC version).

If you don't have the Orange Box then I recommend buying that rather than just Portal.
Nah id get the 360 version cause im a poor fuck, but I hadnt heard NEARLY as much about TF2 as i had about Portal. Yes id get the Orange Box, so the game would still be there. I love FPS games so if Portal is a failure, personally, is TF2 enough to redeem the 60$ american i threw at the Box for portal?

You say that but there are a couple people in this thread saying not only is it good, its god on wheels. So is if its just meh, is it still worth it?
Well it depends.

Has the majority of the game been spoiled for you? If that is true, then Portal will not be nearly as good as people say it is. However, if you like the idea of a unique puzzle solving system using Portals, then I would recommend Portal, even if people have spioled the game for you.
Nah not enough of it has been spoiled for me not to like it. I like puzzle solving, but i also like story. Is their balance?
Yes there is. Portal is rich in dialogue, not the mention you can learn a lot about the facility you are in by observing the set pieces. Based on what you have said I think you are the type of person that would really like Portal. Still, don't go in expecting it to be the greatest thing ever.

Earlier you expressed concern that Portal has limited replay value. I'm afraid that is true. The game itself lasts about 2 hours. there are some challenges you can complete afterwards, but it doesn't do to much to extend the life of the game.

That's why I recommend buying the Orange Box. You get enough games to occupy yourself for a long time. Heck, TF2 alone has maintained my interest longer than almost any game.

I'm going to be honest, vanilla TF2 is nothing compared to the new TF2. I can't imagine playing the console version again after playing the PC version. I don't know how well TF2 still holds up on the consoles.

Still, I initially bought the Orange Box on the 360 and felt it was well worth the money I spent on it. It was so good that I bought again once I got a better PC, and that was back when it still cost around 50$.

Oh definitely, Half life 2 + episodes is a great experience and you can't do better for multiplayer than TF2 (which is always getting free updates, so it's always fresh)
Awesome, thanks for the input. Im starting to think the Orange Box is more worth getting TF2 rather than Portal.

You've never owned a Nintendoconsole, did you? ;)

Other than that, Portal is awesome. It might be extremely famous on the internetz and all, especially for a game that won't last you 10 hours, but it definitely isn't overrated. Both the gameplay as the atmosphere (the story, if you will) are awesome. You really won't regret buying it. Oh, and if you have an xbox: the downloadable version also has some extra levels. The lack any atmosphere, but it's still some extra gameplay for your money.

Yeah, its completely online but don't let that stop you! Its probably one of the better online games I've play recently.
Sweet thanks for the input. I love online games, I personally love CoD4 with a passion, is TF2 better than that? Gameplay, community etc terms i mean.

I beat it one night, so yes it's short, but there's only so far you can go with a game like portal before it goes from absolutely amazing to amazingly repetitive. Portal was honestly, one of the most original games I've ever played. I was laughing the entire way through because gladus is flat out hilarious. The gameplay itself, couldn't be better. It combines the need for thought, with a need for face paced reaction time. Most FPS's just need the reaction time and the only thought required is to hit R and wait for something to die. Portal's puzzles are complex and you get a great sense of accomplishment when you get through a hard level. The physics of the game are extremely well done. It's one of those games that everyone has to play, just to experience it.

Sorry but if you want to experience TF2 the best way get it for the PC, Valve hasn't released many updates for the 360..

Again i'm speaking out of the PC community but on the PC the community is pretty good and game play is really balanced. There is a class to balance out each class (Spy kills Sniper, Pyro kills spy, Heavy kills Pyro), that and it by Valve.

i didn't say it was the only example. i just said it was A prime example. and most non-violent games on the wii i don't consider games. like fit and sports games. most games involve ending somethings life usually with a sword or gun.

Ah thank you for that. Id heard that the game was good, but exteremly short. Well im not one to knock a game for me clearing it quickly, because ill replay any game just to do things that i liked, however a game that i can beat in a couple hours? I figured there must not be that much of it to be liked, but I also enjoy being ensconced in a game. So if i can get enough enjoyment out of Portal that TF2 is just sweeting the pot i think I'll get the Orange Box. However you seem like one of the more informed game enthusiasts on this site, so when you say the Console TF2 isnt as good as the PC one, will i get enough fun outta the online experience to been happy?

Eh, at best give it a rent now unless you are a HL2 fanatic (like me). TF2 is the main reason its worth $30.
