It was the perfect length considering what it was - a puzzle game with a small story. But this just means that for Valve to succeed with Portal 2 they just need to scale everything up i.e. the story, the gameplay mechanics, the puzzles, the general mind-warps.

But I'm sure they can cope with this, I have every faith in them :D

I would just like to hang a quick disclaimer here and mention that Portal is my #1 game of all time and it pains me to say a lot of these things.

I'm really skeptical about the new portal. I mean, how would the early chirstains have reacted when Jesus 2 showed up around 36 A.D.? Valve have done the impossible and created a game for which there can be no improvements. If you thought the game was too short you are provably wrong. There is not a single thing they could have done with the physics engine and portal mechanic that was not already in the game.

You know what? For the rest of this post rant we are going to pretend Portal is like Tetris. Two conceptually perfect games executed without flaw.

Now, immagine you are the makers of Tetris and you've decided to make Tetris 2. What do you do? Ok we'll upgrade the graphics a bit, add some new colors. BUT WAIT! This is still just Tetris but with new looks, so we'll add some new block patterns. BUT WAIT! You used every block pattern possible in the orriginal, so we'll add a plot and story. BUT WAIT! You slipped and hit your head in the shower and forgot that puzzle games are about the puzzles and nobody gives a damn about a bunch of blocks falling down in a line.

Now apply all this logic to Portal. Ok instead of an android we have robots, still thats entirely cosmetic. The portal puzzles are back, but there isn't anything else we could possibly do with the game mechanics so we'll just have the same ordinary puzzles but in a different order. Of course since the game is going to be significantly longer its going to be the same puzzles in 4-6 different orders. Then there is the plot we're adding, except its weird and out of place because this is a PUZZLE game and nobody is here for a good story. You know what the plot of Portal was? Here is A, here is B, here is a portal gun, go nuts.

Of course all of this is completely arbitrary because the reason Portal is my #1 game of all time and Tetris isn't even ranked is because of its humor. Rather than go into a big detailed argument about why Portal 2 can not possibly live up to this legacy, let me just show you this:
The cake is a lie.
Did you laugh? Did you giggle? Did you even smile a little bit? Yeah, thats what I thought. One of the downsides of humor is that once you've heard a joke it just isn't as funny the second time. Portal is the guy at the party telling every person in the room the same joke. Everyone thinks its funny so they tell it to other people at the party, except it isn't funny this time because Portal already came around and told it to everybody. Even when they go home and tell it to their other friends it won't be as good as the first time around because Portal delivered it so much better.

If I had to put all this in a nutshell, I would say that Portal 2 is going to be shit. Not because it will be a bad game, but because the bar is set so incredibly high that the only way it could not be shit would be for Valve to program the second coming of Christ.
They are introducing coop play... which is a kind of new mechanic which sounds like it will be fun... annoying too when you play with some retard who cant follow simple instructions or even tie their own shoelaces...

Portal was abit on the short side, no doubt about it. I can live with it being short because what was there was good. But dammit I'd rather be getting Episode 3 instead of a sequel to Portal

I'm sceptical towards Portal 2. I don't really see a good way to continue the story.
I agree with you completely, i'm hoping they'll come out with a demo before I make any judgments about it though.

It left you wanting more, but still feeling completely satisfied.
Agreed on that.

A felt the last level went on just a fraction too long, so I have to say, too long. (But that's not in the poll.)
I didn't consider adding a 'Too long' option, since you're the first to say it was to long.

Portal was a tasty morsel of gaming perfection!
With Valve's track record, I have every confidence that Portal 2 will kick ass!
Still wish they were doing HL2:EP3 though...
An end to a start, and a start to another... *Wink Wink*

I refuse to answer the poll. I don't care about how long it was, it just was awesome!

2 words: Co-op Tetris. Co-op works great in shooters and RPGs but this is a puzzle game. People like to forget that every single human on earth is stupid and for this game mode to be functional one of them will have to be your partner.

And anyway, I'm looking forward to Portal 2.

Lastly there's portal and if you're a regular veiwer you'll understand how insane these words feel coming out of my mouth but I can't think of any criticism for it. I'm serious! This is the most fun you'll have with your PC untill they make a force feedback codpeice...Absolutely sublime from start to finish and I will jam forks into my eyes if I ever use those words to describe anything else ever again. Yeah I know its not verry funny to love a game but fuck you! Portal is great and if you don't think so you must be stupid!

-Zero Punctuation: The Orange Box
Now let me ask you this, can you add more water to a full glass? No. You can try, but ultimately you'll just end up making a mess. In this same sense how can you improve on something for which there is no criticism? For something to be improved there first has to be something wrong with it. There was nothing wrong with Portal. Seriously, if you think there was a single mechanic they could have done better you are provably wrong.

Just for the record I really do hope Portal 2 is great, but that hope is shielded behind a massive wall of skepticism.

I liked portal
It's perfect in length and the gameplay is amazing.
Loved it even though it was slightly on the short side, but if it was longer I may have blown a fuse if I couldn't figure a puzzle out!
I'm not looking forward to the new one, to be frank.
The game is good as a standalone and any attempt to bring it to Half Life is a stupid idea.
We already know they're connected if any of you have heard the ending song since the robot singing even talks about Black Mesa, but the new one, I think, will not surpass the first.
