With the release of Modern Warfare 2 and its touted "realism" the thought came to me that Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, in my mind, did probably one of the best jobs at balancing the gritty combat realism with realistic tactics without making it super realistic and making you wait for hours in between engagements with a game like ARMA 2, while still making the game accessible for most gamers.

So my question is this, what level of realism do you personally prefer in your shooter?

I hate realism, I want gun to be on target shoot and things I shot at fall down. Basically run and gun and no tactics.

TF2 realism, like Timesplitters sort of. I play alot of TF2 so I guess that.

Timesplitters was brilliant.

Semi-realism. I can not stand the arcadey feel of Halo. Only Unreal Tournament knows how to pull off an arcadey feel and not suck.

Realism makes you fleshy and weak, and that makes the guns boring and generic.

I like the arcadey type, even though they tend to be less of a challenge, but that has given the world a great quote:
"I'm outnumbered, outgunned and low on health...The odds are poor for the enemy!"

I like semi-realistic. If I shoot something I want it to fall down without wasting a whole clip of ammo. I think COD has a pretty good balance.

Imagine a Metal Slug FPS...

...actually, that'd be shite, 2d Metal Slug is what we want.

Definitely this. Physics and lighting being realistic, that's fine. Weapons and stuff realistic? No, not allowed. Borderlands does this very well in fact, and adds the depth of an RPG?

I like GRAW on the realism mode, although I am getting my face PWNed off at a relatively early stage in the game. Call of Duty is pretty fun, though.

Oh, I certainly want realistic games, but only up to a point. I want to drop people with one bullet, and be safe in my tank from grenades, but I don't want to get bogged down in the complexities or actual warfare that a simulator provides.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm not partial to a smidgin of ultra arcade madness now and again.

Left 4 Dead levels of realism is my favorite, also known as "Very unrealistic". In all honesty I hate realism, it bores me endlessly.

It depends entirely on what I feel like at the time. I'm glad all those different levels of realism exist in games, because I can enjoy all of them at different times. Sometimes I just feel like a quick deathmatch blastfest in games like Unreal Tournament, and sometimes I feel like crawling through the underbrush and working out my plan of attack in games like ARMA2.

Realism can be fun (see HL2 Mod: Insurgency), but absolute unrealistic arcade-style can also be quite fun. (see: Team Fortress 2.)

IMO it doesn't matter to me as long as the gameplay is fun.

I always thought the point of games was too escape realism and just chill out in a scifi/fantasy setting where you can take some damage and dish out painful amounts of your own on enemies you don't feel sorry for because they're not real. I feel like Halo took this setting as far as it needed to go and games like COD make it more realistic, which is cool, but I still miss the old PC days of Doom.
