Regarding MMO's, I know a lot of guys play female characters (which is cool), but I've also heard of (and known) some guys pretending they are female IRL in order to get help/free stuff off of unsuspecting guys.
I'm a bit skeptical of if this actually works though, as I'm a girl who plays, and while I dont make a big deal out of it, the most I've gotten is generally harrassment/unwanted flirting.
So I have a question for you, what do you guys think, and have you ever pretended to be female to get things?
If yes, did it work?
If no, would you, given the oppurtunity?

I myself, am somewhat girlish so I can really mess with a man's head.

That's what having a father with a doctors deegree in psychology can teach you.

I tricked a guy in Borderlands by message saying that I was a 16 year old girl willing to go out with him for the most powerfull weapon he had. I left right after he did. I felt REALLY bad... and I found out I couldn't use it unless I was level 71....

So that was my past experince with a female character.

Every female character I make in a game without voice chat, I do exactly that.

Works every. Damned. Time. No regrets. I mean, it is a video game, after all.

Heck, everyone I know on Guild Wars still think I'm the girl I pulled from a google image search onto their guild forums.. they'll never figure it out.

No, because I don't want people's handouts. I'm not a charity case, I take pride in earning my own stuff.

That said, I have played female characters, and people were more open and friendly because they made the assumption that I was female. I didn't bring RL into it unless directly asked, but never lied about it either.

It happens because it works. It works because online no one cares about reality as much as perception of reality.

I think the reason real females may not notice it is because they are being actual females and not the porn inspired caricatures of women that these guys portray themselves to be.

I'm a masive troll, I have multiple people that "know" I'm a "chick" with a voice masking program I have had manny guys try hitting on me only to have me fuck with them. I'm an ares-hole but it's what I do for fun but I have my limits, I try not to do it to guys that don't deserve it like the nice ones butyea most guys online are jerks any way.

No, but now that you have given me the idea I think I will try that.

Altough I did play as a girl in fallout because they don't get knocked over as easily.

I've pretended to be female, but not to get free stuff. I just do it because it's fun sometimes, until people start asking to add me to facebook or to do an audio chat... Then it get's kinda tricky.

I wouldn't be against doing it for a couple laughs.
Me and my friend did once share a laptop to make a new WoW account where we basically acted as stupid as possible and constantly begged for coins. "Piss colour coins, plzzzzzzz".

This reminds me of a reverse Boys Don't Cry. Anyway, while I condone people being free to choose their appearance and presentation, I myself wouldn't dress and act as a female.

You do not want to even know how perverted that sentence was when I glanced at it the first time. Had to stop, and slowly reread it to make sure it didn't say what I initially thought it had said. Christ, my mind is screwed up.

On topic though, I tried this once, but only because I myself was curious to see how well it worked. To sum it up short, what should have taken hours for a new character to acquire took only minutes. People were far more generous with their things. Shocking to see what "Can you help get me a better sword? *wink*" can do to some people, especially when they're not much better off than you.

Ohhhhhhh

OT: No, I have not. I just don't like the idea of pretending to be something I'm not like this.

I play as a female more often than a male character in MMO's, because it makes them more fun and last longer since more people want to be your friend; I'm not trying to lure innocent young men into my pedophile trap or anything, if they ask if I'm actually a girl I'll tell them that I'm not, most of them know better anyways (at least I like to think so)

In short, I do it to get friends, (ironic, since in real life it does the opposite...) which makes the experience all the more fun.

No. I have Aspergers Syndrome (clinically diagnosed, and god do I hate the idiots who make it necessary to say that) and that kind of deception doesn't come naturally to me as a result. I've heard that NTs do this, though. They tend, in my experience, to be very deceptive and untrustworthy, so this doesn't surprise me. If they weren't the kind of losers who would do shit like this, they wouldn't build societies where it works.

I have played female characters in games with exclusive equipment (I'm very partial to the binded set in Demon's Souls, what with its high fire resistance and low weight) or games like Mass Effect where it's a different way to experience the story, but I have never and would never misrepresent my IRL gender to others.

I kinda pretended to be my friend's best friend because the latter kept using my phone to text the former. I tricked the former into thinking I was her best friend, but only for one message, and then I told her. but I felt really bad because they were kinda fighting, and I don't think best friends should fight, and I made her think I was being mean to her. but it was just an experiment to see if I could trick her into thinking I was her friend.. nothing too bad happened to me though. I was accused of saying all of the stuff that her friend said but I used facts to prove my partial innocence. I still regret the whole thing though..

I'm surprised by the lack of 'yes' answers.

I think the opposite happens a lot more: Females who play males to keep the creeps away.

People generally tend to think I'm a guy actually, granted I don't voice chat, and I just sort of go with it. Especially when you're playing online, guys tend to hone in (and by hone in, I mean troll, insult, and be generally douchey) on chicks with mics. It's important to have a gender neutral username.
