could it be that guys pretending to be girls add to the kinda bad rep of female gamers? (attention wholes - they could in fact be guys). interesting thought.. sad if it turns out to be true.

Would I pretend to be a girl? Yes. Absolutly. To get free stuff? No! Heck, I wish I could do so in real life.

No, and I wouldn't, but I'll happily laugh at others who have fallen for it. Its bad enough when a woman joins a game and every fucking guy proceeds to interrogate/insult her, let alone them actually then stooping to that level of pathetic-y-ness.
Or just start continuously talking about random crap for no damn reason when they join. Serously, this has happened damn near every time when I play Xbox Live. When a girl happens to be in a party, everyone is fucking talking. When she leaves, it's silence.

Quite an odd phenomena, actually.

As for me, I don't pretend to be a girl. Though that doesn't stop me from squealing like one when something totally awesome happens, as people from the Halo group can attest to...

I've been mistaken to be a girl online before. I quickly rectified that situation. So, despite its apparent ease, I'd go out of my way to not be thought of as female.

My friend used to do exactly that after he learned his sister could get free stuff so easily, so it does actually work. I've never done it myself though, mainly because getting stuff that way feels so cheap.

Besides, it's not really that effective a technique since you either go on with the charade after getting free stuff (and therefore have to stick around pretending to be a girl for ages) or you tell them the truth/disappear, in which case the victim may report you or cause problems later. A good scam leaves the victim none the wiser, and if you're going to do stuff like that, you may as well do it properly.

i've never tried to impersonate a girl, but i do generally play female characters and people tend to make assumptions. One time in WoW i was starting my whirlwind axe quest just as two other guys were finishing it; they then accompanied me up and down the entire friggin' continent to help farm all the quest items for it. (this was back when getting around Azeroth sucked.) i doubt they would have done it if they thought i was a dude.

also this one guy was hella creeping on me in a newb zone once. i would've logged out then and there except he happened to mention where he lived, and he was down the street from the house i grew up in. weird coincidence. after that i promptly deleted the character. months later he happened to run another alt of mine though BFD. :p

Ehh... I am me. I generally don't care about gender and if people asks its 'yeah, I'm a guy.'

I've had someone assume I was a chick, and the couple of posts he wrote before I corrected him were rather amusing but... nope. Never masqueraded as a woman. Don't see the point.

I once did it on "the palace" (avatar chat room) for trolling purposes......and on various webcam charts for the same reasons.

Woman here. I tend to play female characters in MMOs almost exclusively - and I think my one male Blood Elf from my time in WoW was pretty enough to pass as one =P - and I've had people be nice to me a lot. I've never gone looking for it though, and it actually makes me feel uncomfortable. I try to decline any offers of better gear, etc, as much as possible unless it's from within my guild. Even then I'm a bit leery.

I'm the kind of person who will scour the internet for the answer to my question rather than just ask in the chat, although I've gotten better at that... >_>;

No, despite almost always playing a female character in MMOs I never pretend to actually be female. If I'm on a role-playing server, or in a RP guild, I will certainly play my character as female but never pretend I am one in real life.
^that's pretty much what I was going to say... but I'd say my characters' male to female ratio is about 1:1...
Hell, when playing a female character, I always just laugh it off (usually with a lightly mocking comment) when male characters flirt. Even as a DM, I have a hard time role-playing straight females. They're always either lesbian or indeterminate untouchables... but if someone asks, I'm truthful about being a 30 year old male and bachelor.

For all the internet knows, I'm a woman.
For all the internet knows, I'm a man.

I never even hint as to whether I'm a man or woman on the internet. At least, I make an effort to shroud my gender in mystery.

Anytime I do say what I am, just assume it's a ruse. I find it's a lot easier to deal with people on the internet if they don't know who they're talking to.

Nope, though I suppose that doesn't mean anything since I don't play mmos, simply due to the fact that I'm too poor for the subscriptions. But, I WILL play as a female character, and for a pretty simple reason.

As a straight, adult male, when making a character look the way you want, dressed the way you want and so on, would you rather stare at the ass of a muscular man? Or a lithe and sexy woman? Personally, I'd rather stare at a womans ass. Of course, to each their own.

The only exception to my character preference being female, is Mass Effect. Though, thats mainly due to Tali.

I've never been mistaken for female even when I've used female avatars (thinking of WoW specifically) Must be the way I 'type' or my word choice, no idea.

I have a few female characters online not to get free stuff but because sometimes the female armor just looks better.

Yep, yep, and yep. I've done it a few times actually especially from my now out-of-use WoW account with my female Night Elf. It was both humorous and sometimes weird at the same time.

I'm a bit skeptical of if this actually works though, as I'm a girl who plays, and while I dont make a big deal out of it, the most I've gotten is generally harrassment/unwanted flirting.
Yeah! I've been gaming for years, and no one ever gives me anything cool for being a female gamer. I've never been offered help or free stuff. I can't imagine why a guy would pretend to be a girl online - the most I've ever gotten is stalked. -_-;

Actually, I kind of like the flirting. That's nice. Well, until it turns into the aforementioned stalking....

But really, free stuff? Where's my free stuff? Huh? **crosses arms and waits for free girl stuff**

[sub]In all seriousness, I don't get this. Most girl gamers get little more than verbal abuse. Anyone care to enlighten me?[/sub]

I am a girl, but I've never used that to get free stuff. First of all, I usually don't tell people I'm a girl for usual harassment reasons. Yes, it does happen. No, not always, but I'm not one to push my terrible luck. And if my in-game friends treat me differently when they do eventually learn I'm a girl, that's their prerogative.

It disgusts me when guys pretend to be girls to get free stuff though, and I've known guys who have done it too. Way to make actual female gamers look like a bunch of incompetent beggars who can't get their own gear.

I did once get free stuff just for being a girl though, totally on accident. I was still new to online gaming and didn't know that the people playing female characters probably weren't actually girls. So I'm going around in Guild Wars with another female ranger, totally thinking it was a chick when it was really some Austrian dude. He finds out that not only am I a chick but also 18 (at the time), and gives me a plat and some rare weapon. It completely blew my mind.
