Never seen FMA (always wanted to try it but I never have time), and I never got into Pokemon ... well I did, just, the game, not the anime. Is it good? It seems rather child-oriented to me ...Mass B said:

I don't like telling people I read manga because there's a clear vocal majority and stereotype. I understand that for every guy with a body pillow there's like 1000 without, but people already have this belief that cartoons are for kids and you should grow out of it at 14 or whatever and this doesn't get challenged. You don't get news stories saying "respectable man enjoys Hellsing", you get "psycho marries anime character".

The fanbase.
I instantly want to dislike everything they do. They are, by far, the most annoying people. I would rather listen to some wanna be tough guy blast shitty music through his phone for an hour straight, than listen to someone talk about anime for 5 minutes.
The huge amount of people with anime avatars (all of which look like they could be from the same show, mind you) will probably tell me how wrong I am, but i don't really value your opinion, so.

The people who are too into it. I love anime and manga, I like scifi and fantasy and other than books no other medium does it better.

If you like these things most people will stereotype you as one of those "Japan does everything better" but I'm not like that and don't want to be grouped as such. I'm a nerd sure but my taste is broader and like every medium 90% of anime and manga is utter shit.

The main problem is HOW DO I FIND ONES I WILL LIKE?
Because from picking up a dvd or watching a trailer of a film I know weather or not I'm going to enjoy the film. And it's easy to just flick through all the "thriller" or "action" or "comedy" titles right?
With anime it's really difficult to do the same sort of thing. It's like music for me, I have no idea how to find "more like this" "less like this".
I suppose my refusal to watch anything with more than 25episodes has it's limits too. I watched Monster (70-100 episodes I forget how many), and although it was very good, I decided that I would never do that again. Also I started watching anime with DBZ, watched pretty much every episode. Although I have fond memories, I cant really go back and watch episodes any-more.

This pretty handily summarizes the text wall I wrote earlier. Just like any other form of media, there is good anime and there is bad anime. The problems and stereotypes occur when bad (or just mediocre) anime become insipidly popular and color the public's impression of anime as a whole.
Here is an interesting thought experiment. Imagine that you live in Japan and decided to watch a popular American television show to see what the fuss is all about. You decide to watch Family Guy. How would your impressions of American television be affected? What if the show was a documentary on Astrophysics on the History Channel? What if it was a trashy 80s sitcom filled with sexism and implied wife beating?
I will admit that there are plenty of people in the anime community that are incredibly obsessive and blindly devoted to their chosen hobby. These people exist in every hobby, from gaming to gun ownership and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent these people from influencing the public perception of that hobby. Level headed and mature anime fans are just as embarrassed by their actions as you would expect. Gamers are embarrassed by the cursing 12-year-olds on Modern Warefare and Christians are embarrassed by WBC. There will always be fanatical sociopaths in any hobby.
Weird stories. I hate the fanboys, but no more than trekkies, Harry Potter obsessives, or the Citizen Kane reenactment society.
