It's kinda legal here. As long as you're not advertising on the streets.

So basically, brothels are legal.

GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA.
Is it legal here....?

OT: I don't really care because i wouldn't go looking for one but i voted yes because honestly it doesn't affect anyone who doesn't want it and doesn't do any harm. Besides is there an easier way to make money?

[small]your poll says "sexiest"... i lol'ed.[/small]

When I saw the Poll result Over 80% people believe that prostitution should be legalized. My hope on humanity was crushed. :<
Because believing in personal freedom is suuuuuch a horrible thing? If someone wants to sell their body out of their own free will, who are we to judge and stop him/her?

So yeah, I am favour of it. However, I am also in favour of strong regulation and inspection to combat human trafficing and sex slavery. All too often poor Eastern-European girls who try their luck in the West end up in the filthy hands of abusive, controling pimps.

In holland they did make it legal AND taxable. The prostitutes for instance can become a one person business. Or they can join a Co Operation of these services.

They also have a Union, indeed the sex workers have a union...

They have access to regular checkups and their working conditions are kept an eye on. And only LEGAL girls and boys can become prostitutes.

What does this all mean it is legal it is made to be safe and hey it offers people seeking sex a safe place to have sex. Seriously :) And if illegal things happen the police can go in and deal with it. It is taken out of the shadows and made into a regular business.

Less problems to obviously...

Really keeping some basic things illegal means they still will happen anyway. But much less safe, much less secure much less anything decent. You might disagree with what they do but they serve a purpose! Legalize it and make it controllable!

Yes. Having sex with willing strangers is perfectly fine, bringing money into it doesn't make it much less morally wrong. But class it up and regulate it it. Legalizing it and regulating it would stop it from being potentially harmful; the same can be said about marijuana.

It is legal here n the UK and I see no problem if the girl is doing it willingly (I once read on the BBC that a quarter of strippers and pole dancers have degrees).

What I don't think should be legal is piping because pimps often force girls into prostitution and take away their earnings.
Prostitution is legal, but brothels, kerb crawling, pimping etc are illegal

Ya, it should be legal. Here in Sweden it's illegal, and it's considered very shameful. Really is a too old fashion way of thinking for this day and age..

Huh. After reading this I quickly had a google to see if this was true. I was always under the impression that prostitution was illegal here in Britain, but apparently it isn't.

Problem is that most prostitutes will have a pimp, and if you pay for sex with a prostitute who has a pimp you can get arrested.

OT; I think that prostitution should be legal. The way it is here now, it's kind of a legal grey area because of the whole pimp thing. They should make laws that make prostitution completely legal, but in a way that is regulated. Basically, prostitutes have to be in licensed brothels, regular STI checks, like weekly. That way the prostitutes are protected from evil pimps and customers, customers are protected from STI and being robbed, and the government can get a bit of tax.

That's ironic because the 'old' societies all had prostitution. Often it was considered quite a normal thing. It just became a social taboo; something I think is stupid. People should be allowed to do whatever they like with themselves, as long as no one is at risk from it.

It's not called the oldest profession for nothing. Making it illegal doesn't magically make the market disappear, it just makes buying and selling the product far more dangerous for everyone involved. Regulated prostitution is the way to go.

Arguments in no paticular order
#1 It would be sexist if only female prostitution was legal.
#2 It will be done wheter it is legal or not.
#3 All sex is prostitution, since we pay for it one way or another

I'd like it to be regulated, the girls healthy and not carrying STDs. Illegal prostitution will never dissapear, but a safer option would be welcome.

In the US, it's legal to have sex with someone for free. It's legal to pay someone to have sex with you while you film it, because then it's pornography. But it's not legal to pay someone to have sex with you. So, yeah. Legalize prostitution.
You make a remarkable point (thus my remarking on it) that I haven't ever thought of, and I'm the sort that HATES contradicting or unenforceable laws.
I can't take too much credit for it. I'm pretty sure I got this from Penn and Teller. I thought it was a fun way to think about it too.

I am fine with prostitution as long as it is consentual. A lot of prostitutes are however exploited by criminal organizations who force women into prostitution. Because of that I do understand that it is illegal in certain countries.

Even when prostitution is legalized, such as Las Vegas and surrounding areas, it continues to bread an atmosphere of objectification and abuse towards women.

Currently I do not think it should be legalized, though I can imagine a time and place where it could probably be legalized with not bad results. It is simply not that time, or place.
Keeping prostitution illegal isn't going to solve those problems any faster. All it does is create an environment where the victims of abuse are forced to stay silent.

well half legal anyway
you can do it but no soliciting on the streets or pimping etc.
Yeah, brothels. I'd assume it keeps down the rape count.
Why do you assume that?
Someone who needs sex is more likely to pay for it then rape someone.

It is legal in most places, including the U.S and Australia. Brothels exist in almost every country on Earth.
Nope, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_by_country] though it is in Australia. Odd though that in the countries where it is legal, brothels are often still illegal. If any place is good for regulating prostitution and safeguarding prostitutes, it's brothels.

I find it funny by the way that in Southern America it's allowed so much, despite that continent being heavily Roman Catholic.
