I say it should be legal one one, big condition.
It must be regulated. As in, a license to be a prostitute, no STDs allowed, regular checkups, and taxed.
Problem solved, now on to fixing the economy...
Agreed.

As Carlin said " If fucking is legal, selling is legal then why can't selling fucking be legal ? "

This is so far down the line no-one will read it but.

Why is prostitution illegal, two consenting adults having sex; When filming two consenting adults having sex is legal?

What is it about the camera that makes it okay?

I feel you could have a legal prostitution ring for a while, as long as you film everything but the john's face.
It used to be illegal in the US until someone said that it is a form of "Freedom of Speech."

If it works for us, why wouldn't it work for the US?
I don't know how it qualifies as "works." What happens is that poor women from foreign countries get "work permits" to work the brothels. It become a government-sanctioned form of exploiting the poor.

Further the Netherlands is beginning to tolerate more child pornography as a result. Especially because there is loopholes in dutch law that tolerate pictures of children from countries that have a much lower age of consent. After all, doesn't the Netherlands have a "pro-pedophile" party in the government called the "Brotherly Love, Freedom and Diversity Party (PNVD)"?

The question that must be asked is: is that any better than being smuggled in on a ship, bound in indentured servitude, living under constant threat of arrest and being powerless to stop any further injustice done to them?

As much as I hate the cliche, I believe that legalized prostitution is the lesser of the two evils.

It techniacally is legal here in Ireland.
What? How?

Prostitution itself is not an offence under Irish law. However, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act of 1993 prohibits soliciting or importuning another person in a street or public place for the purpose of prostitution (This offence applies to prostitute and client.). It also prohibits loitering for the purpose of prostitution, organizing prostitution by controlling or directing the activities of a person in prostitution, coercing one to practice prostitution for gain, living on earnings of the prostitution of another person, and keeping a brothel or other premises for the purpose of prostitution. Advertising brothels and prostitution is prohibited by the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act of 1994. 18 is the minimum legal age for a prostitute in Ireland (Child prostitution Legislation exists to protect persons under this age.). The Criminal Law (Trafficking in Persons and Sexual Offences) Bill 2006 recently came into force making trafficking in persons for the purpose of their sexual exploitation a specific offence, though previous legislation already covered much of this area.

Funnily enough I thought in britain it was legal, or is it? I remember this guy in my class at uni said that he slept with two prostitutes over the weekend ages ago, and I just laughed for ages, but I wondered if it was even legal.

But i heard that over in the states (in one of the southern ones i believe) that they have cathouses (I remember seeing it on channel five lol) that have prostitutes in there and all seems fine and dandy. everyone is checked, there is order and no one is getting exploited. If all forms of prostitution were like that, in a controlled environment, then there would be no problem with it.

I also think that when people say prostitution is degrading to women etc, that for some of the ones that willingly do it, it is a conscious choice and they know what they are getting into, it is sometimes a stepping stone for other ways of life. And if they do so choose it as their ultimate way of life then what is the problem? some clean streets, some clean toilets, and some sell their bodies. There are other opportunities out there for them but that is for them to decide.

Don't know if this ever actually went through or not, but I was under the impression that prostitution is already legal in the UK, as long as it's limited to keeping the working girls in an actual establishment, with a limit of two prostitutes in house at any one time, with street-walking being strictly illegal.

Because with the government sanctioning it and you can come by plane or car? And under government sanction, welfare dependents now have another avenue to find legal work - either become a prostitute or lose your welfare check.

So the government becomes the biggest pimp of them all and can throw you in jail for not paying your fees.

Formerly, yes, but it didn't get enough support to be an actual candidate for the Second Chamber.

...Child pornography is heavily overreacted to, anyway.

What makes even less sense is this: in a certain country (I can't remember which) prositution is legal, but using a prostitute is illegal.

What the hell?

And we have a winner. Looks like the child-porn propagandists (or "child-art photographers") have won another mind.

Thanks Wyatt. I forgot to check my mind at the door and do my cultural sensitivity training that morning. Please forgive me if I let my uneducated religious-bias slip when talking about intergenerational love. Last thing I need is to be is accused of a thought crime.
